Dear directors,

Please stop playing music from this... Arvo whatever, we don't like his music and we even don't know how to pronounce his name!!!

Thanks,

-Bespin-

That's remarkable coming from a man who has not choked yet from speaking French.

Insert very obscure Steve Martin clip here.

Indeed. Absurd sentiment.

Well, that's already done.

I've heard of him, now I just need to check out a piece of his. ;)

Your name is Alvar, and you don Tauriel as your avatar! Now don't you start with me you Swedish scum!

Here, start with one of my favourites:

Are there synths used, or is that entirely acoustic?

The effect of an ethereal choir is pretty cool.

It's written entirely for strings, and the bell. His layered writing here is a common characteristic of his work.

Wow, cool.

Choir? What choir?

To me, large portions of it sound almost like there's an ethereal vocal element. This "layered writing" KK speaks of must be the cause of that.

It may also be because a lot of his writing takes after Gregorian chant and his diatonic voicing is common to sacred choral music.

What films did Arvo Pärt score?

He never wrote an original film score, but many of his compositions have been used in zillions of films:

Also, his peculiar style ("tintinnabuli") and harmonic language have inspired James Horner in several occasions, but also many other film composers (Thomas Newman, Chris Young, Abel Korzeniowski)

Pärt is one of a handful of living composers who is genuinely great.  Bespin, on the other hand, is a dime a dozen dilettante twat.

I'll try to fix my humour and get you back!

I know of course how to pronounce his name... it's Arrrrrrrrvo parrrrrrti. You have to roll the "r" like in italian.

And I will listen to Gregorian Chants today, promise.

UPDATE: Greenpeace just added "Gregorian Chant Lovers" on his vulnerable species list.  Damn!

One of the interesting things of this chart is that almost all composers in the top 10 write largely using tonal language, or have at least a specific sensibility toward melodism and consonance. To me it's not surprising, but so much for the common knowledge that believes all contemporary music is unlistenable and atonal...

I'm not sure this is true - I seem to recall mention of him working on at least a few scoring projects in his early days, but they're undoubtedly quite obscure.
