Popular Post The Psycho Pianist 216
I can't see that anyone's posted about this already, but I just saw that Williams was last night featured on Jim Svejda's Evening Program from 8-11pm talking about the Williams/Spielberg collection. Wondering how you can listen back to KUSC streams as I can't find anything about it on their site - or did anyone happen to record it? Incanus 5,714
Thanks for the info! I suspect the programme will become available eventually. Thomas Newman seems to have been on the show mid-February and his interview podcast became available at the start of March. So hopefully the Williams one will be posted on their site soon enough. Popular Post Jay 37,346
OK, I've heard this now! It's THREE HOURS LONG - however, the majority of that time is selections from all three volumes, so the amount of talking is probably, I dunno 20-30 minutes at most. There isn't TOO many new anecdotes (the "but they're all dead!" story is indeed told again), but it is nice to hear JW in a more casual atmosphere. He mentions his late wife Barbara, he talks about working with Oliver Stone and Christopher Columbus, and mentions how he recently sat down with Spielberg to re-watch Jurassic Park and Jaws in advance of the Live to Projection concerts, and how much they both like those films very much all these years later. In regards to the actual new CD, the most interesting factoid is that The Terminal was never intended to be a part of it! At the recording sessions, Spielberg asked John if they were going to play Viktor's Tale, and JW said they weren't planning on it, but they could probably do it if the clarinetist was up to it. The Clarinetist said he was, so JW called his librarian to get the sheet music out of his house, and they recorded the piece that afternoon in 3 takes! So the final CD would have been even shorter if Spielberg wasn't there, and didn't ask about that piece! Listening to the whole interview, you really get a feel for Williams' fondness for his music for Catch Me If You Can (which explains why it got such prominent run time on the new CD), Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, ET, and Close Encounters. He also is clearly very proud of Dry Your Tears, Afrika as well, and him and the host have a nice discussion about his work for the human voice (without evening mentioning Hook at all ) Overall, quite a nice interview! Thor 7,492
Thanks for the write-up, Jay. Old stories or not, I'm keen to hear it. So no mentions of the ones they left out (A.I., TLW and WAR)?
Jay 37,346
No mention at all. Hook is never mentioned either until the host mentions almost at the end that they didn't play anything from it, and they don't mention any of the other Indy films or Sugarland Express or Always either

Jay 37,346
And its just the interview, without the music clips. Convenient! EDIT: Oh, no. It's not what aired, its been modified. On the radio, the music played in between them talking. Here it seems they mixed music under their conversation, at least for the Jaws discussion. Popular Post Disco Stu 15,495
My favorite little moment in the interview: when he talks about how Spielberg always films the recording sessions and says "I wonder sometimes what he will do with all that footage." crumbs 14,306
What a fantastic interview, lots of great nuggets in there. Just hearing him refer to The Last Jedi by name was nice, complete with a shout-out to his favourite, Daisy! One comment that caught my attention was "I'm now beginning to remember [Amistad] very well." Wonder if that's a clue that he's in the midst of supervising an expanded release of Amistad? He made a similar comment about recently re-watching Jurassic Park (presumably for that expansion?) and also revisiting the ending of Munich for some reason.
