The Orville 2x12 Sanctuary

Another good episode.  Macfarlane must REALLY like the Moclans and/or the guy playing Bortus because they get so many more stories than anybody else!  I'd love if they dove more into other characters and cultures before revisiting this one so many times.

Anyhoo, the story was good once again.  I enjoyed seeing all the various random aliens in the hearing scenes, and how much of a treat was it to get a scene with the admiral characters played by Victor Garbor, Ted Danson, and Kelly Hu all together?

BTW, when they found that female Moclan on the refugee planet inside the nebula, was that a character from a prior episode?  If so I completely forgot about her!  I think that Bortus and Klyden are headed for divorce.  They seem to diverge more and more as time goes on.

The new Marina Sirtis character was nice; It was a chock to hear her with a different accent! I assume this is her natural one, but I've never seen her in anything else besides TNG and its movies I don't think.

Andrew Cottee gave us what is certainly his best score yet this week.  It seems he is carving his own path; Instead of relying on constant homages like McNeely and Debney, this one seemed wholly original to me (unless I just didn't recognize something he was homaging).  It was good and yet another score I can't wait to hear on CD.

2 more episodes to go!

You are not alone. I also forgot about her, so when Captain Mercer remembered her by name, I did some Googling.

She was in S1E3 About a Girl. She is Moclus' chief poet but a female whose parents avoided the surgery as a baby. They lived in exile in the mountains for her entire life, and she published poems using a pseudonym. All males thought the poet was also male. Ed called her as a character witness when Kelly tried to defend Bortus' decision to keep her female but lost.

I forgot all of that because I had no memory of that trial sequence. I'm pretty sure I fell asleep in the initial watch sequence, and I never rewatched any Orville episodes until this past Sunday. After watching Sanctuary, the MIL liked it so much, we binged the first six episodes of S1 until GOT aired. That let me rewatch S1E3 in its entirety.

Rewatching was a treat because now I understand the "jar of pickles" inside-joke.

Truncated opening titles?!  I'm okay with it.

It's about "time" that The Orville went here...

Back to the Future, Part II rules so far...

That ending... :kaboom:

Wojo just seems like an objectively trustworthy authority on this to me, I believe him over Steef on this one. Especially after what I remember sitting through in last year's Discovery, and especially after watching those two Kaylon war episodes in The Orville the other night bowdown

I don't appreciate your condescension.

My understanding of it is someone with a rod stuck up their arse, making them easily agitated. I'd definitely say Wojo is easily the most agitated member on the board, historically.

Without a doubt.

Another couple of 'sodes last night, and we're nearing the end of the season at last :(

The time capsule romance was corny but its heart was in the right place and I liked that episode quite a lot, even with the technical logic liberties it took. I have no problem completely suspending my disbelief with this show, especially when it makes me care about the characters and their feelings like it did here.

There's only been one episode all season where I felt like the piss was well and truly taken, but this romantic installment managed to charm me, I believed it.

The female Moclan sanctuary episode after it was another top tier one for me, it was really terrific. Frankly, it's stories (and hardly subtle allegories) like this one which really highlight the genius of this show in general. I loved the dilemma and it was great to see the division play out amongst some of the characters and the wider union. Again, Shakespeare it ain't, but for a so-called comedy telly program, this was enjoyably dramatic and thoughtful. My only disappointment with it was that I wish it could have been bolder than it ended up being - towards the end I was thinking that a dispute with the Moclans might spiral into an unexpected conflict with the race, further complicating matters completely, especially with the Kaylon threat now being a thing. I thought that would have been really great writing and it might have provided the stage for some interesting dynamics, but alas it seems the team didn't have the stomach nor the ambition for it, or they just didn't want to go in that direction with the show, which I think is a shame.

Either way, I still thought it was a really engrossing episode, certainly one of the better ones of the season.

Wow, the latest episode had some great motion control split-screen shots, including at least one which I couldn't figure out how they did it.

Also did the score remind me of Silvestri in some parts, or was that just wishful thinking regarding the topic?

Yes, but I don't know how to explain why.

I'm curious whether the gravity problem that afflicted the first actress will return for this one, or if they'll forget about it.

I think her older age is a big factor - Halston Sage was 'fine' in the part, but bloody hell she never exactly looked the part, did she. Her replacement also just looks more butch, but in a none dikey way. Ideal really. I think she's great.

The Orville 2x13 Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow

Wow, that was a cool episode! I really liked it a lot.  This is really the type of episodes I enjoy most, these one-off cool sci-fi concept episodes that bring tons of great character development with them.

Quint is gonna LOVE blonde Kelly when he gets to this episode.  I certainly got a new appreciation for her after this episode!

The special effects for having multiple Kellys was usually pretty convincing, though the Kaylon scene where they hid in the ice was a little dodgy (and couldn't they detect Isaac was on board?  He didn't shut down too!).

The ending was really interesting; Does her rejecting a second date mean she's now in an alternate timeline?  Does it mean the memory wipe didn't work?  Will we check in with this Kelly again?

John Debney's score was nice too, though I don't remember any particular highlights.

Bring on the season finale!

I wish they had discussed in earlier episodes whether or not individual Kaylons contained distinct chips or signals that they could use for tracking.

On the one hand, it would permit the show to discuss the ethics of microchipping "sentient" beings like you would a pet.

On the other hand, why would such a xenophobic and arrogant race take such measures in the first place?

Perhaps that specific episode is meant to show that Isaac's body itself is a Faraday cage, and he needed to manually dial home when he wanted to upload data, instead of always being tied to the home planet Wi-Fi.

***

Did Ed and Kelly ever mention that their first date initiated seamless courtship that lasted until their marriage and eventual divorce? It's possible we're meant to assume that we now have an alternate timeline or altered past where Kelly never conspired with Halsey to give Ed the titular command. Or, Ed was rejected initially, worked harder to win her heart, and they never mentioned the dump again.

I dunno, I mean is ice anything that would prevent, say, The Orville's sensors from figuring out there's something underneath?  It seemed like they could have pulled it off better by just not having the Kaylon ship come so close or something.

I've typically not been a fan of the Ed/Kelly romance thread that's run through the whole show, but this was by far the best entry in it.  Really good episode top to bottom.

The one-sentence synopsis for the next episode (on IMDB) mentions that Kelly's decision at the end of the episode does have effects going forward.

Quote

The crew must contend with the disastrous fallout from Kelly's decision.

Wherever that synopsis comes from and however that works. Maybe it refers to something else entirely?

Edit: Reading more about it, this episode was in fact the first of the season finale 2-parter, even if the episode title doesn't suggest that.

Anyway, for me one of the highlights of the episode's score weirdly was in fact that short comedic bit after Ed's "second" date with Kelly when he's on his way back to his quarters. It's really not more than 5 seconds, but I loved that.

Wow, another great episode! A lot of action, and of course a fantastic score by Joel McNeely. Definitely a great way to send off the season.

And yes, the events of the previous episode drastically affect the events of this episode. I don't want to spoil anything, but you'll see what I mean.

While Fox ordered two seasons of 13 episodes each, only 12 episodes actually aired during season 1, with one held over and aired early in season 2 instead (the Bortus porn addiction one).  So we ended up with a 12 episode season 1 and 14 episode season 2 as a result.

Going forward, if its renewed, every season should be 13 normally

Uh oh... it's Fox!

If it was cancelled it wouldn't be because it's not watched (it gets good ratings for a modern network show) but because of budget, I would think.  A show with this much effects work (and an orchestral soundtrack!) can't be cheap.

I have to agree, this was an incredible episode. I'd even go as far as this being the best episode of the show yet. Visually this went above and beyond... and I thought the Kaylon 2-parter was VFX-heavy. McNeely's score did give me some Williams vibes here and there, but it still felt fresh... great action music!

Oh man, I SO hope this show gets many more seasons.
