In 1986, MGM premiered its sequel to the hit 1982 film Poltergeist. Returning to score Poltergeist II was composer Jerry Goldsmith, who had received an Oscar nomination for the first film's score. Relying sparingly on musical ideas and themes from the first film, Goldsmith wrote a new score, focusing on the new characters and supernatural ideas presented in the film. For Intrada, the film presented a landmark -- it was only its second release, following the prior year's inaugural release of the same studio's Red Dawn, but its first being tied to the premiere of a summer blockbuster (hopefully) film and its first Jerry Goldsmith album. The costs were enormous, including full payments to both the musicians' and singers' unions -- costs that only made a 30-minute album possible. The composer and music engineer Bruce Botnick assembled a program focusing on certain elements of the score, while ignoring others (mainly the aggressive action and large choral pieces).

Since that time, the soundtrack to Poltergeist II has been re-released and expanded by Intrada and several other labels, with alterations and additions along the way. The score has returned home now and it hails the most definitive version yet. This three-CD set presents the complete score from the digital Sony PCM 3324 mixes Goldsmith and Botnick prepared back in 1986 for presentation on CD. While clean and quiet as you'd expect from the digital medium, the producing team added a fair amount of reverb. The complete score is presented again, this time newly remixed from the 1/2" analog film mixes stored in the MGM vaults, designed more to suit the film. While not as balanced as the digital mix, it features a much more crisp, detailed sound, mainly due to the lack of reverb. 

The third disc features a wealth of alternate and unreleased material, the most impressive of which is the unreleased, complete initial version of the final confrontation, “Reaching Out/The Astral,” which features a distinctive three-part female chorus throughout the winding chordal sequences and, at one point, a solo soprano intoning her own descant. “The Astral” was Goldsmith’s own titling of the climactic sequence where Carol Anne reappears. For this early alternate confrontation music, besides the unique choral material, Goldsmith wrapped with a more detailed finale emphasizing a variety of colors before finishing with a deliberate, accented trombone coda. It is all being premiered here both with and without chorus. Both versions were dropped in postproduction and Goldsmith’s now-familiar re-scored sequence was used instead. Flipper-style booklet art plus all-new liner notes from Doug Fake chronicling entire history of this Intrada project complete this impressive Jerry Goldsmith presentation.

In its day, recording was considered state-of-the-art, utilizing then-new Sony PCM 3324 digital format. For initial 1986 release, Goldsmith and scoring mixer Bruce Botnick created pure digital two-track mixes designed for album and listening purposes. For film itself, Botnick created analog three-channel mixes, designed to balance with center channel dialog. For this definitive edition of Poltergeist II, Intrada presents both complete digital album mixes plus analog film mixes. Choose your preference.

 

CD 3 presents array of extras including all cues scored for orchestra and chorus but sans choir. Idea is not as redundant as it may seem: Finished film itself frequently drops chorus or dials it down to near-inaudibility. Cool highlight: Being presented for the first time ever is Goldsmith’s complete initial version of the massive final confrontation, “Reaching Out/The Astral”, which features a distinctive three-part female chorus throughout the winding chordal sequences and, at one point, a solo soprano intoning her own descant. “The Astral” was Goldsmith’s own titling of the climactic, heavenly sequence where Carol Anne re-appears. Thanks for that, Inky. Once I start earning again, I'll invest in this (along with the other 25 OSTs that I need!). Looking forward to hearing the analog mixes (well, I am The Analog Kid!).

Am I missing something? The 20 tracks on both CD1 and CD2 are exactly the same length, yet CD1 has an extra 10 seconds on it. 

Anyway, the score is "an island of class, in a sea of dross", so...an essential purchase.

It's not necessary to revisit the film, and if you've never heard this in almost 31 years, then don't bother, but if you do...the original LP had all the stuff one needed.

JG adds a new theme for grandma, and has an Native American sound for the Will Sampson character. He also makes use of the hymn GOD IS IN HIS HOLY HEAVEN, to illustrate Kane. The descending "house" motif also makes an appearance. Other than that it's as different from POLTERGEIST, as DAMIEN is from THE OMEN. It's cut from the same cloth, but instead of a bespoke Saville Row suit, one gets an off-the-peg M+S. Still, it is, without a single hint of a shadow of a doubt, the best thing about the film.

 

To add to what Jay has just posted: I'd recommend THE POWER, BUTTERFLIES, and THE SMOKE. 

If, however, you're expecting TWISTED ABDUCTION, or REBIRTH, you're going to be disappointed.

It's more 'Total Recall' than 'Poltergeist' (1982), though. Kind of mixed with 'The Omen', purged of its more challenging complexities. If you need this set (3 fucking discs) that is clearly geared towards hardcore collectors, is another question.

Who would pay 15 bucks more for the same content?  This was a wise decision by Intrada.

 

But in general it can be seen as reissue. The main reason it was made is that the Kritzerland version is sold out. And the few additional extras are not worth buying it - for those who own the Kritzerland version:

Excessive.  The complete score with worthwhile alternates would happily fit on a single disc.  If both existing mixes were sub-optimal, why not have Bruce Botnick supervise a remix from the best available elements?

I guess they are pulling a Rambo II, where the few bits of unreleased music that was salvaged in good quality totalled less that a minute. So the alternate mix plus gave the release some additional validity.

Its not something I would just rush out and buy it (But perhaps when I have some spare dough). I already paid about $31 for the Kritzerland 2cd from private seller and barely played 2 or 3 times last year. The analogue mix is quite good on it and blows away the reverby sound on Varese DE 1cd set. That Kritzerland expansion improves with repeated playback but to me on the whole (the sequel score) doesn't compare well to the original first film.Its too electronics quirky but enjoyable.

While, Intrada has a very good track of handling Goldsmith mixes and their recent WARLOCK was just nothing short of stunning. I'm only curious about the various alternates and different mix version on disc 3. Intrada being aware that most fans/collectors already have had multiple issues of this score; thus made a wise choice of dropping the price to a mere $22 is quite a bargain as it has been pointed out. 

Proper liner notes and the quintessential disc 3 are the only reasons to get it and its price tag is hence justified.

On another note; I must say that perhaps Intrada is the only label now showcasing multiple mixes of entire score presentations twice! Recent examples being: THE ROCKETEER, RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II and now POLTERGEIST II: THE OTHER SIDE joining this new presentation bandwagon. Luxury or overkill? You decide?

You should buy it. There are a few surprising cues. No one has ever raped the brass players like Goldsmith. The Intrada treatment improves the score although more tracks could have been connected. 33 tracks is too much for a 60 minute score.
