Popular Post Sharkissimo 1,973
It suddenly struck me how we have a thread for scores, and on the other extreme a thread for favourite short musical moments, but strangely nothing for the middle ground. So here it is. The New Arrival - The Blue Max (Goldsmith) I can't get Jerry's sombre march for the Luftstreitkräfte (or is it Stachel's ruthless ambition?) out of my head. Creates a sense of one's fate already being written, as you tread slowly towards oblivion. Check out the false relations in the counterline at 0:50. It's somewhat reminiscent of the Main Titles from The Sand Pebbles, but even better. Incanus, Disco Stu, Naïve Old Fart and 3 others
Popular Post Incanus 5,713
Flow Like Water (aka The Wave & I Am the Avatar) from The Last Airbender by James Newton Howard: One of JNH's most spine tingling creations with beautifully constructed build-up of not only a single cue but of the whole score, coming to a final summation here as the three primary ideas for the character of Avatar, the avatars, the bending and the hero theme, come together. This is even more beautiful with the choir although JNH keeps it mostly just on top of the orchestral sound to enhance it but at the hair raising climax it comes through in a gorgeous fashion (at least in the film). I don't think the composer has created anything quite as organically fluid and flowing in the last several years. publicist, Sharkissimo and James

They guy sure knew how to stay true to his concept. Another star-sudded half-serious Agatha Christie-adaptation, another big luxurious tune that could grace any epic. Those were the times. Disco Stu 15,495
One of my favorite Desplat melodies. A pleasant little fairground waltz that really captures the low-key, sad tone of the film. Sharkissimo

Dixon Hill 4,233
A smattering of cues from The Village and Snow Falling On Cedars. Great companion pieces, though the former is the more refined and mature work. Quite breathtaking in its elegance and subtlety. Incanus
publicist 4,643
The four-note main theme from 'Snow' is too timid and vague to make the score stand out. Speaking of which, 'Vertical Limit' is another JNH from around this era that is no masterpiece but listened through the distance of 17 more or less dismal years it appears to be classy and robust - if not exactly challenging - adventure score. Most importantly, back then re-use fees still meant an agreeable length of, in this case, 45 minutes.

The score was always more about ambience anyway. One of his finest, without a doubt. I think I prefer it over The Village, even though the latter is the more accessible work. publicist 4,643
The RVW/Pärt inspired parts and the sweet americana for me. As a whole it kind of lacks focus, as if JNH didn't really got what the movie was about (fundamentally). I don't blame him, it's hard being called up to supply a thick cover of false importance. Naïve Old Fart 9,498
That would be nice, but, since we have the super-duper 2cd set, it would seem unlikely.

#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
I was heartbroken after paying through the nose for the old bootleg in the early 200's and finding out the original soundtrack recording was different. publicist 4,643
The 36-minute reworking makes the score appear better than it is (in original form). Also one of Tomlinson's greats, even if the hiss is distracting.
