Daniel Day-Lewis quits acting

Hey, DDL, listen to this Aznavour song:

My approximative translation:

I shall not say my farewells

I know some who aspire for a sabbatical year
Alone and far from the crowd in the Pole or in the Tibet
Who make public confessions hand on the forehead
Playing uncomfortable in their own skin, allergic to success
They want to forget the autograph hunters
They want to escape media, save their private life
But followed as a shadow by a photographer

In their search for the inner self and their identity
Very early they speak about retreat
We would take them almost seriously
But for me the thing is clear
Believe in me I shall not say my farewells

Not having taken life with the wind in stern
The way being blocked to me, it was necessary to open it
I shall thus be careful not to spit in the soup
It was too hard for me to make it boil
Falses exits irks me alot
False intellectuals make me laugh

Sincerely it is better to laugh at it
Look me straight in the eyes
Whatever anyone can write or say
Believe in me I shall not say my farewells

These small natures, sunday's hermits
Kings of "I know everything" who hear themselves talk
As soon as their records sales drops
Without admitting one's guilt, they are coming back

Admit that there are kicks in the ass that are lost
"I leave", "I'm exhausted", "Hi, it's me again"
With a new look, a new sound, well, shit
You stay or you go away, there's no big deal

When it will be necessary to turn the page
For the moment there is no hurry
I shall warn people around me
However I shall not say my farewells
Unless I change in old age
I shall not say my farewells...

Damn, I loved every single one of his performances.  I remember while "discovering" him in "My Left Foot" thinking how amazing the performance was of that guy who had cerebral palsy only to realize it was just a complete performance.  :(

He's said this before in the past as well you know. I'll believe it when I see it.

And with an official press release! Is Day Lewis the Stefancos of the acting world?

Certainly their personalities are very similar, heh!

What if he's just preparing to play a character who retires from acting?

Didn't Joaquin Phoenix already do that "schtick"?

Sorry to hear this, if it is indeed true. Way too young and talented to retire. :(

You created a thread to announce that you were "retiring" from the board.

I don't understand the reason to announce a retirement and then give absolutely no reason and then say you will never comment on it. Could it be just for publicity's sake? All you have to say is "Yeah I want to focus on other avenues of life, etc and so" or really not even say anything at all and no one would care or notice.

I didn't know he only did around 20 movies. So he has got the highest movie/Oscar-average. Though it's not his best movie, I consider his performance in Gangs of New York as his best.

One thing is for sure:  I've never seen a movie with Daniel Day Lewis in it.

His retirement will affect me very little, it seems.

MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDERETTE, and A ROOM WITH A VIEW are good movies. You could probably skip NINE (although I like it).

My sensibility in movies leads me to think that I would like Lincoln, Gangs of New York, and There Will Be Blood.  I just never have gotten around to any of it.

(Well, we watched about five minutes of There Will Be Blood and my spouse wasn't having any of it, so we switched).

Except for Lewis, I don't see the connection.

I still haven't seen There Will Be Blood or My Left Foot, but the performances I have seen by DDL have always been very good. His performance in Lincoln is one of the best I've seen.

The only times an actor retired and it meant anything were Sean Connery and Sheriff Harry Truman.

Gene Hackman as well.
