I believe this coaxing thing is in the script. It's the only constantly recurring reference to coax out I can find.

They mentioned coaxial in every scene! I think Kathleen Kennedy told Ron Howard to reshoot lines for every scene where they mention it.

Yes, however the point is Powell has written a coaxium motif in the score and we are yet to find it!

I was surprised when first going through the score that people found it exhausting, as for one thing, Spaceport is more like a suspense piece than an action piece. Not to mention a lot of the cues like the first part of Train Heist and the second half of Flying with Chewie have plenty of nice down time to settle.

Marauders Arrive is like a perfect climax for that first third of the score. Just...good lord, that cue just gets more and more spectacularly insane as it goes on. It's like...music for a train crashing, or something! :P

Lando's Closet is a nice respite from all the action, as is Chicken in the Pot if one were to listen to the album back-to-back as I'm sure most have. Yeah, it's action heavy at times, but there are enough pit-stops for that to not be a major problem.

I haven't seen the film yet and the only thing I'm anxious about is the mix, once again buried under SFX. Why don't producers have faith in the power of the music to tell a story anymore? I find it's stingers and jumpscares that are the only times the music can stand up and belch...

As did I.

But that does seem to be a problem with theatre sound mixing. I remember seeing Jurassic World four times in the theatre and never being able to make out any music save for the couple of Williams reprises. Then when I watched the film on DVD, I heard a lot of the music perfectly clear!

So maybe just wait to watch Solo on DVD. ;)

Honestly, it wasn't a particularly great score, but it had plenty of rousing badass moments. The weakest stuff was probably the tribal music for those random people no one cared about.

The Marauder music was fucking awesome, if that's who you mean.

It's great, though i can see why some might find it grating. That Bulgarian folk style is extremely compressed and resonant, using quite a different mode of vocal production to that of the Italian bel canto sound we're all familiar with.

Yeah Powell constantly influenced by Rosza:

This HTTYD2 theme particularly screams "Rosza!"

----------

Well Actually The Love Theme is kind of amalgam of Powell's previous writing:

This Rio 2 theme comes as the most similar, particularly this statementt

And this other statement too

And..

also this Ice Age 4 theme (once a small motif from Ice Age 2):

Andalso for your refreshment, Han Qira Clip! Feat. The Love Theme!

Damn, those music was GLORIOUSLY mixed in these kind of scenes.

It screams 'Vaughan-Williams!'

A better example is Fal's. And it's moments like these that give the score some much-needed depth (and caesura).

Didn't think so. Too bad. It's such a short cue, though; I'm not surprised it was left off. Possible unpopular opinion here, but I honestly rank Powell's Han & Qi'Ra love theme as one of the best in the franchise. As in, better than "Across the Stars".

So, I guess my two fav love themes both involve Han, lol.

For me this score is a mixed bag of feelings. I think Williams' Adventure of Han is good enough and appropriate for this type of film and I really liked 'Mine Mission', but apart from that I couldn't find yet great musical moments. For example, I found 'Reminiscence Therapy' as a bad arrangement of Star Wars themes... I won't be surprised if John Powell didn't work on that track at all and left any of the additional composers to work there.

Anyway, I'll need to listen more times the score.

Having heard Lando's Closet, the muscular brass of this score and even, believe me or not, even Chicken in the Pot, I'd love to hear Powell's Bond score.

I was thinking exactly the same thing!

I don't think that would be too unpopular an opinion, the theme is stunning! Very Golden Age Hollywood, simply gorgeous. Reminds me of Arnold's love theme from Casino Royale and feels right at home with any other soaring love theme in the saga.

Let's be frank for a moment: there's not a dud in the whole bunch! They're Williams' bread & butter and diverse in their styles and moods.

And yes, Powell would create a fantastic Bond score given the chance. Who knows what happens with that, now Boyle's directing the next.

I'd also like to add that while I enjoy all the over the top swashbuckling antics in this score, Solo shines the most in its quieter moments. The very end of Reminiscence Therapy is one of my favourite moments in the entire score. Makes me think of Indy for some reason.

The entire, relatively low key, space opera melodrama of the final cues from Savareen Stand-Off onwards (and including The Good Guy which is in the wrong place on album) is absolutely great

At 1:17 in "Break Out", are those the opening fanfares from the Main Title?

Also at 1:32 in "Reminiscence Therapy" (between the rebel fanfare and Here they come) there is the augmented-chord-arpeggio transition section from the Main Title into the starfield pan

I was thinking the same thing! perhaps it sounds kind of like the Cross motif from TLC?
