RIP Tom Petty

It's official now.

Farewell to a great American.  One of my favorite songwriters of all time.  His music and his lyrics are simple but get at something deeply real and irreducible for me.

Quote

I know what's right
I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin' me around
But I'll stand my ground

And I won't back down

Sorry to hear it. Seems like he finished his tour just one week ago.

I haven't listened to much Tom Petty over the years, but he's been one of those 'pillars' in rock history that I've always been meaning to check out.

He did; His performance at the Hollywood Bowl last Monday night is now his final performance.

He sang about real, working class people and not in a flashy, performative "working class hero" way like Springsteen (who I do like, no offense to him).

A deep-ish cut I've always loved, lyrically, is "Even the Losers"

Quote

Well it was nearly summer, we sat on your roof
Yeah we smoked cigarettes and we stared at the moon
And I showed you stars you never could see
Babe, it couldn't have been that easy to forget about me

Baby time meant nothin' anything seemed real
Yeah you could kiss like fire and you made me feel
Like every word you said was meant to be
Babe, it couldn't have been that easy to forget about me

Baby even the losers
Get lucky sometimes
Even the losers
Keep a little bit of pride
They get lucky sometimes

Bob Dylan statement

Quote

"It’s shocking, crushing news," Petty's friend and Traveling Wilburys bandmate Bob Dylan tells Rolling Stone in a statement. "I thought the world of Tom. He was a great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him."

Read this news just a little while ago while filling up the gas tank. Terrible day I’m having with this and the Las Vegas shooting.

RIP Tom, officially the greatest composer ever.

Is he on life support just for the time all the family gets to know about?

The article I read stated that the family requested a do not resuscitate, and that he’s expected to be pulled off life support tonight.

Goddammit this is a great song

Quote

People come, people go
Some grow young, some grow cold

I woke up in between
A memory and a dream

So let's get to the point, let's roll another joint
Let's head on down the road
There's somewhere I gotta go
And you don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels to be me

He wrote so many classic "hold your lighter up high and sing along with your eyes closed" songs

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh!  And let's not forget the tenuous John Williams connection!

Petty wrote and performed the song "Christmas All Over Again" for Home Alone 2: Lost in New York!!

I put together a big Tom Petty playlist including all the albums by him & the Heartbreakers, him solo, and Traveling Willburies, with some important additional songs ( Mary Jane, Christmas Again, Draggin' Heart, Waiting for Tonight, Something In The Air & Elvis covers, etc) mixed in where appropriate

Feel free to listen along with me today!

  • 3 weeks later...

Well we finally have a Wilbury covering Petty in the wake of his death :)

Bob Dylan is in pretty good voice here too!  Obviously, it's just a crappy cell phone video though
