Popular Post phbart 609
Not exactly. To not hurt his feelings, I told him JW had a second career as a guitar player but was embarassed by it, and instead of changing his name like "Directed by Alan Smithee", he changed his image (ever notice how both are bald?). But I got drunk during the party, so I ended up telling him he was a useless son of a bitch and anyone who don't know the difference between JW the Maestro and JW the guitarist deserves a slow and painfull death. Jay 37,258
IIRC the album version is one take all the way through, while the film (and therefore LLL disc 1) version is mostly that same take, but they intercut to a different take for a small section for a performance issue - I just don't remember where fommes and _deleted_

Popular Post Holko 9,491
Listened to this again. What a masterpiece! The best part is how all the related themes are given time to show up and blossom, statements of the Flying Theme (as almost a synthesis of The Call and Friendship, which we've heard plenty of) feel incredibly well-earned and satisfying when they're not overplayed like on the OST - even when it soars in Halloween, it's over a shaky foundation and lands with a thud, it's just not the time for it yet, not taking the spotlight from Bike Chase -, how after the brilliant overture we take an extended time to dedicate gorgeous quiet harp textures to relationship growth, until the threat starts creeping back in and pushing the score to start being more extroverted, the lovely 3-cue setpiece in the middle (Get Drunk, Frogs, Kiss), wonderful further developments, falling action and a fantastic build to a pitch perfect extended finale. Still worthy of my top favourite score spot shared with STAR WARS. I love Far From Home/E.T. Alone (alternate)! The high tuba is an interesting touch but it's the early mothership departure that makes it - somehow it has an elegant but unfulfilled majesty, suggestions of a beautiful shape but the cue as is is just reaching for it and not succeeding in getting there, eventually just giving up (which of course fits perfectly with the scene it scores). I have to wonder if JW was thinking of bookending with a more complete reprise at some point. My second favourite of the alternates is End Credits, such a different feel to that opening with all those returning wind stabs and brass pedaling. Datameister 2,034
Isn't it wonderful? This is one score for which I think the expanded presentation is SUCH a better representation of the score than the OST. For me, the OST basically comes across as a repetitive collection of well-written concert suites and alternate versions. So, like, I'm very grateful to have it, but if I want to go on a musical journey, the sequencing in the film is the way to go. My only complaint with listening to the score that way is that the softer cues in the first third get a little old for me. They're very nice but they just last, like, one or two tracks too long. I have a playlist that slightly reconfigures the LLL release to incorporate things like "The Kiss" into the main presentation, and I briefly tried actually removing one or two of those shorter tracks. I may go back to that at some point. Anyway, yes, this LLL release is essential and I'm so grateful it made it into our hands! Can't believe it's already been three years. Yes, why would you put a concert arrangement of the Flying Theme right after the concertised Halloween with an extended Flying section at the end? Or interrupt the fantastic Alive/Rescue transition only to play an arrangement of the Suburbia theme which is featured heavily in Rescue already? It definitely feels more repetitive. Unlucky Bastard 7,782
Yep, it's a concept album. But these bozos think it "gives away too much too early" or something. As if those themes stated early are... a spoiler?? There's no way you could make that score as it was in the film chronologically really sing on a 40 minute LP unless your goal was to make most of Side 1 and some of Side 2 a hard slog of dissonance and near silence. The album recognises the overall score's limitations in accessibility, so it wisely highlights the musical ideas across the board. The album recognises the overall score's limitations in accessibility, so it wisely highlights the musical ideas across the board. I have no problem with him creating a new "concept album" listening experience for the OST; the score does indeed have long stretches of similar material. I also love every individual track on the OST. I just think it's a crappy program in the middle. Doesn't flow. That has nothing to do with the chronology of the film - I just mean on a purely musical basis. Honestly, the biggest culprit is "Flying" being right after "E.T.'s Halloween." Even if you just switch "Flying" and "Over the Moon", you already end up with a vastly improved program. Or if you want to deviate further from the film, put "Flying" right after "Three Million Light Years From Home", letting "E.T.'s. Halloween" lead right into "E.T. Phone Home." I prefer either of those options over the sequence we got on the OST.
