Film Confessions

Well, I've made it clear before that I thought Batman Begins was mediocre and hated The Dark Knight and haven't seen its sequel on that basis.

Here's a big one:  I've never seen Goodfellas.  It's one of only 5 Scorsese films I've never seen and for many is considered his best.

Scarface is one of those films everyone seems to have seen but I don't know of anyone who'd say it's one of their favourite films.

Seeing film is my life, and I've seen more than most. I see maybe 250 films a year on average (maybe 150 of those are new films of the year), but I still have some GLARING holes in my film history. For example, I only saw IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE for the first time 2 or 3 years ago. It's really a neverending quest.

I recently thought about how I organize my film/media viewing in my everday life, and I boiled it down to these five main areas:

1. I want to see all the new films that my colleagues see, and by doing so, I have most of the year's most important "art films" covered. Alas, they go to more festivals than I do, so I never manage to see all of them in time for the yearly lists.

2. I see more blockbusters and genre fare than my colleagues, so that needs to be covered too.

3. I want to fill some essential, old film holes (whether "arthouse" or Hollywood cinema)

4. I often want to see my favourite movies over again

5. I've begun to see a lot of TV shows

As you can imagine, the day isn't long enough to accomodate all of this, and there are obviously days without watching anything. So compromises often have to be made. In recent years, I've tended to prioritize newer films over "filling holes".

I have never seen Scarface. But I've seen the ending...I think.

I've never seen Gone With The Wind, Citizen Kane, Singin' In The Rain, On The Waterfront, 12 Angry Men, The Ten Commandments, Unforgiven, To Kill A Mockingbird, Ben Hur, The Deer Hunter, or North by Northwest

Casablanca and The Sound of Music are nothing special

Casino is better than Goodfellas

And BTW here is the similar thread on this topic

I've only seen Ben-Hur for the first time today, but it sure as hell wasn't the last time.

The movies that seem to appear on every top movie list are gangster dramas: Godfather 1-2, Scarface, Goodfellas. I will probably never watch any of these, I just have no interest. The genre for me is exhausted by the first 2 Mafia games and the Star Trek TOS episode "A Piece of the Action". The Fifth Element also gets a lot of praise, but I just couldn't make it through the first 20 minutes. I skipped forward to the diva song, then deleted it. There's something very unpleasant and offputting about it.

On the other hand, Phantom Menace is one of my go-to fun adventure movies alongside Temple of Doom and Back to the Future. I know it's terrible filmmaking and most of the fun elements aren't intentional, and I certainly wouldn't qualify it as well-made or good, but it's such a glorious trainwreck that I just can't help enjoying the crap out of it. I also really like HP5 just as a fun movie if I ignore it's supposed to be an adaptation, I probably have a montage fetish.

The Godfather is more than just a gangster drama, and also precedes every other example of this genre you mentioned; Those are derivative of it not the other way around.

And it has more to offer than those too.  You might like it.

I got weirdly obsessed with The Godfather films when I was about 13.  Read the novel voraciously too.  It was a key for me in that transition from the childhood thing where you like every movie you see to teenage/adulthood where you can start discerning between bad, good, and great.

Oh GOD I fucking hated Scarface.  De Palma's worst film.  I guess that's an unpopular opinion?  I can't imagine anyone here would care enough about Scarface to  challenge me on it.

That's because you don't like movies that aren't about angels.

Hope this helps,

Alex

Casino looks better than Goodfellas but has some weaker moments in the final act.

I've never see TMNT 2: SECRET OF THE OOZE. Apparently, I'm not missing much.

Being 100% serious, it's a big step down from the still surprisingly great first movie.  I saw the first movie recently and it's not nostalgia; that's a genuinely fun and entertaining movie still.

I'm saving the sixth and last spot in my signature for a special statement of agreement.  I don't know exactly what I'm looking for, but I'll know it when I see it ;)

Why stop at 3 x 2?  You can easily fit 3 x 3!

Because people.

I love seeing movies with an audience!  I have almost no nightmare stories about annoying behavior of people in theaters.  I tend to avoid times when teenagers will be there though.

You fucking casual, sod off back to your Fast and Furious movies.

I wasn't big on Casino. It was okay, and I quite enjoyed it, but it was Robert de Niro's Cape Fear to Robert Mitchum's Cape Fear, if we're comparing to Goodfellas. Or something.

That's probably because you are like the other people: "Go Hanks! Show that bastard!" (smack, munch, smack, munch, burps).

Heavens no I don't speak aloud during a movie.  And I've rarely seen in a movie where that's a rampant, long-lasting problem.  Isolated cases, sure.

Sometimes I enjoy it, like in horror movies where I don't enjoy being too immersed.

Speaking aloud during a film is very distracting, and I wouldn't do it to annoy others. Thankfully the theater I go to, has a lot of quiet or respectful people who go to it, so my cinema experiences are never truly disrupted.

The last time that I spoke aloud was when Rey says something about the Falcon making the Kessel run in less than (15, was it?) parsecs.

Two thirds of a packed cinema shouted out "Twelve!". That was fun.

That does sound fun!  Movies are best as communal experiences IMO.  These antisocial curmudgeons who only watch movies at home are...well they have different views from me.

I won’t see Blade Runner 2049* because Ridley Scott needs to be stopped!

*aside from the fact I haven’t seen the first

The cinema experience - especially a shared one - can be great, but lately I prefer to watch films at home. I guess that the big screen is just so overwhelming, both physically and emotionally, to me. Its all just too "loud". Nowadays, I prefer to "step back" from a film, to be less involved, and to view it objectively, without being persuaded by size, sound, and images.

Yes he is, Stu! He's also in the latest trailer.
