Which are your Top 5 comedies?

Pretty standard list, no particular order:

Airplane!, Blazing Saddles, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, Young Frankenstein

I took the question as pure comedies or movies that are comedies first and foremost.

Hmm, I realized that I'm not a big fan of comedies... I watch them sometimes, if I have nothing better to do, but generally I don't much care for them. I prefer action, mystery, horror, science fiction, fantasy, and even love stories (so pretty much everything else) over comedies.

That said, I like these comedies.

Home Alone (and Home Alone 2)

When Harry Met Sally

The Burbs

The Terminal

Pink Panther

The Big Lebowski

Inherent Vice

Burn After Reading

Life of Brian

Gremlins

I don't like pure comedy movies that much, because they're often too much over the top and lack a certain amount of substance. I love intelligent movies with a huge amount of comedy on top!

I like in general the Coen Brother's subtle, subversive humour that is often deeply connected to their philosophy and hence sometimes quite disturbing.

Joe Dante's over-the-top-depiction of over-the-top-material can be hilarious and in addition to that his movies full of clichés and exaggerations can contain a big load of satire as well.

And let's not forget Tim Burton's talent to connect death and cruelty with humour and colour.

I never got Tim Burton's humour. His humour is not haha funny, but just, crazy, whacky, and downright bizarre.

True:lol:

He is the only director that regularly kills children in his movies or features babies that get almost killed.

I think Steven Spielberg has a great sense of humour in his movies, but this is the only one where this gift seemed to be absent. I would actually vote for it as unfunniest Spielberg movie.

@Josh500 Have you ever noticed that our avatars are quite similar? The only difference is that my John Williams is clearly younger and my Steven Spielberg has still his right hair.

Are you American?

Honourable mention: Something About Mary

Me every time I see a thread that says "Top 5" or "vs." these days.

It's like all of those list videos on YouTube: "This is my own personal list; do you agree or disagree? What's YOUR _____? Sound off in the comments below! (Be sure to like and subscribe)" Totally empty and hollow, but people still sound off in the comment section. I've decided, especially after seeing what the conversation led to in the "Top 5 Creative Williams Themes" thread, that I won't participate in any more of these threads. If anyone else cares to follow...

Any list without one of Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums or Moonrise Kingdom or The Grand Budapest Hotel is invalid.  INVALID I TELL YOU! Any Wes Anderson will do. He’s an essential comedy filmmaker.

Good one!

Which reminds me... Back to the Future is also a comedy, isn't it? A sci-fi comedy!

Koray!  Where is Woody?!

No Love and Death?  No Sleepers?  No Annie Hall?  Even a good latter day comedy like Small Time Crooks would do!

Curse of the Jade Scorpion for me ;)

I would also include Rodriguez and Tarantino in the comedy fields. The genre is simply too broad for 5 films.

I'm not sure if it's billed as a comedy, but I think that BROADCAST NEWS is funny.

My list was based on laugh-out-loud moments, and for sheer goofy fun, it doesn't get better than Peter Sellers menacing a housemaid, and a parrot, with a vacuum cleaner :)

Why wouldn't Broadcast News be a comedy?

I think of it as a drama first, and a comedy second.

I put it in the same group as THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST, HEARTBURN, and THE BIG CHILL.

Jerry, you're right about Winger. I think the same of LEGAL EAGLES.

Don't even mention THE SHELTERING SKY.

Ugh yeah, there's something manic about her that screams "I'm trying to be great!". Apparently Shirley Maclaine was repelled by her too. Perplexingly, Bette Davis said she saw a lot of herself in Winger, but I'll chalk that one up to senility.
