Star Wars music streamed live this Saturday

Went to this concert tonight - it was absolutely great! Nice selection of pieces overall - although nothing from ROTJ which surprised me. I would’ve loved to hear something from that instead of Duel of the Fates and Battle of the Heroes without the choir, which didn’t really work for me. They did play the whole suite of TFA, which I loved personally.

I didn’t like how they explicitly demonstrated how some parts were ‘inspired’ by other composers, without explaining why this is the case (temp track, director’s demands etc.). It also gives the impression as if someone like Korngold completely re-invented the wheel, which isn’t really the case. Also the  MC was a pain in the ass, saying stuff like ‘Now we’re going to listen to the English (!) composer Erich Wolfgang.....’ and then she had to ask the conductor what his last name was. Painful. But the music was wonderful, so I’m going again tomorrow!

Imperial March - Main Titles - Yoda’s Theme - Asteroid Field

Wagner: Walkürenritt

Rey’s theme - March of the Resistance - Jedi Steps and Finale

Break

Battle of the Heroes (with a surprise conducting appearance by the MC, because she won that ‘Maestro’ tv programme... it wasn’t good though.)

Holst: ‘Mars’ from the Planets

Korngold: King’s Row

Duel of the Fates - Scherzo for X-Wings - Leia’s Theme - Throne Room and Finale

They also mentioned ‘Across the Stars’ on the programme, which they skipped but then played as encore, kind of strange. But it was lovely to hear it anyway!

Would’ve been better with ‘Luke and Leia’ and ‘Parade of the Ewoks’ maybe. The programme is mostly overbearingly loud this way.

Will it be available later as a regular movie on their channel or after stream video will be gone for good?

Could someone record it if it will not be saved? I will be out of my house when it will take place and would love to watch it.

Overall a great concert. I agree with most that has been said. Like missing the choir, loving The Astroid Field and enjoying Mars.

In the train ride  home I will start writing a full report.

What did you think of it, Stefancos?

This was by far the most "Pops/Hollywood Bowl" type concert I've visited in The Netherlands. With lots of light effects during the performance, audience interaction and cosplayers coming on stage (in first rate costumes, the Chewbacca was amazing).

I knew it was gonna be this kinds show when the conductor came on stage dressed as Darth Vader. I guess it's unavoidable in a Star Wars concert.

However the orchestra was first rate and the performance superb, so it really was a very enjoyable night.

Great to hear the TFA suite played live, though I dunno why they moved the scherzo to the second part, and I've never heard The Asteroid Field or Across The stars in concert. Both were outstanding.

Battle Of The Heroes actually worked rather well without the choir. Conducted by the presenter who did it slightly slower than the OST version, while the actual conductor tended to do everything a little bit faster.

Duel Of The Fates needs a choir, but they played a very heavily abridged version, so it was fine.

The second half had a part where they essentially exposed Williams as a plagiarist by playing music that supposedly inspired Williams (or Lucas) and then played the Star Wars version of it. I'm not sure what the point of that was, but it did mean we heard some actual Star Wars underscore in concert, which almost never happens if it isnt a live to picture performance.

Flight of the Valkyries, Mars, Kings Row. Kinda weird to include them in what is advertised as star wars In Concert. But all are good pieces that I never heard in concert, so it was fine.

All in all a great experience, mainly because of the superb performances.

Yeah, this is an odd choice. So they didn't mention it as an influence in the program even?

Obviously Star Wars is often used by orchestras to try to draw people more into classical music, but this seems a little on the nose.

"And now, we are going to perform the classical pieces Williams ripped off to create his Star Wars score".

That's essentially what they did, though the used the word "inspired".

Yeah it was an annoying ‘educational’ thing. I thought that they should tell the full story: temp tracks, Lucas’ wishes, time constraits. This just made it seems like he purposely ‘ripped-off’ these works without reason.

The presenter did a better job the second night, but I still feel she was an annoying presence amongst all of that wonderful music! :P

No one but soundtrack fans care about these things.

The presenter was good, not that I need one for these types of concerts, but she did het job very well.

Hahah, I saw that!  I was hoping security would escort that crazy guy out of there.

Yeah that’s true. But this way I felt they just wanted to show off Williams stealing, and it needs a bit of nuancing.

And yes, fortunately she did her homework for the second night :)

I went to this on Friday. Good playing, and hearing this music in the wonderful Concertgebouw was great.

But the programme baffles me.

I like Mars and the Korngold piece is nice, but what's the point? Who is this for? Why not use that time to play something like Anakin's Theme  or just about anything from Return of the Jedi. The whole "Star Wars is just Holst/Wagner/Stravinsky/Korngold/Orff" act got old very quickly. It was unnecessary, borderline insulting to the composer and a waste of valuable playtime.

I had a good time during the pieces from Star Wars (the whole Jedi Steps and Finale medley was great!), but I was left rather annoyed by the rest of the programme.

The point is likely to give the programme some kind of educational edge, introducing people to classical music through Star Wars. But I fully agree it was unnecessary, and moreover these things just don't work 90% of the time. Just give people a nice night out enjoying SW - proper music in its own right.

It was only 3 pieces though, and all good. So i didn't mind too much.

Apparently there's another concert in the summer of 2019, cards go on sale today.

I did. Sitting through Mars, the Stravinsky comparisons and Korngold in a row got tedious. Then, when they finally got back to Star Wars, the conductor told the audience "the next piece is based on Carmina Burana by Orff."

Give it a rest already!

Also, because of the suites, there was a lot of repeated material. They basically played the bridge to the end credits three times and March of the Resistance and Scherzo for X-Wings twice. It somehow felt like whoever programmed this didn't want to burden the orchestra with having to rehearse too much new music.
