Lewya 360
I wonder if anyone who has seen/heard the score would consider it stronger or weaker than TFA? Trust me, you'll love the score. Recycled OT means they used the themes, which he has to. Luke is there Leia is there, if they are together, Luke and Leia's theme is used. If there is a force ghost of Yoda, his theme will be used. Force theme, Rebel Fanfare etc etc... It's part of the same universe so of course he will be using these themes or it wouldn't make sense. I absolutely love the continuation of his classic themes with the addition of the new themes from “The Force Awakens” and now “The Last Jedi.” The more and more I hear his themes for Rey and Kylo Ren, the more I fall in love with them. When I first saw “The Force Awakens,” I wasn’t blown away by his new music, but it’s grown on me and it fits beautifully into the franchise. https://theplaylist.net/star-wars-last-jedi-review-20171212/ Quote As for the score, it’s needless to say that John Williams’ work is strong; it’s part of the fabric of the series, but even having done this a while now, there are new motifs and angles with which he deepens the historic sonic palette. http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/12/12/star-wars-the-last-jedi-review Quote John Williams once again delivers a soul-stirring Star Wars score – a feat that must be second nature to him by now. Thundering arrangements turn skirmishes into epic battles, new compositions emphasize the sense of adventure, and old themes make appearances for a touch of nostalgia. There’s a reason George Lucas calls Williams’ music the “secret sauce” of Star Wars. Balahkay, Holko, Will and 11 others 11

John Williams employs the themes introduced to us in The Force Awakens, which have now fallen in line as story guiding vehicles as much as the classic themes from the original trilogy and prequels, masterfully blended and applied seamlessly into the narrative in a way that only he can achieve without pulling you out of the scenes. The epic fortes and crescendos dancing their way through the score’s pages pacing this heavily layered non-stop adventure! New themes didn’t come pouring out as they did in The Force Awakens, because frankly we didn’t really need many, though there is a new theme for Rose that stood out in particular. The “March of the Resistance” is used perfectly in one spot, elevating the power of the scene, and vaulting it up my list as one of my favorite compositions. We also get a return of the “Jedi Steps” theme that brought us to the emotional end of Rey’s journey to find Luke in The Force Awakens. I saw it in a great theater and it really sold the music well. That said, I enjoyed the mixture of new themes with old themes. There’s a version of The Jedi Steps that seriously blows away the version in The Force Awakens. I honestly left The Force Awakens being a little hard on the score and then I came around to it. I left The Last Jedi wishing I had the score on me. That said, there weren’t any new leitmotifs that really stood out to me on my first viewing but scores tend to stick with me or rub me the wrong way after repeatedly viewing them. Popular Post mrbellamy 6,270
Regarding Making Star Wars, listened to a non-spoiler portion of their podcast and found their comments on the score encouraging, in an obviously inarticulate sort of way. They mentioned that new Jedi Steps variation: Quote The music on this one was, I feel, vastly superior to The Force Awakens but at the same time, a lot of it owes everything about it to Force Awakens. Like "Jedi Steps," the version of "Jedi Steps" in this movie...I could be wrong obviously because it's first impression, but I feel like that's gonna be the breakout track that defines this trilogy in the end. And you only get it at the end of Force Awakens so like, "Yeah, okay" but when you hear it, I think there might have been cellos added or something, it was longer, but it has more of a somber tone, more of a deepness...just anyways, I don't wanna David Collins it up too much cause I can't, but it's completely a deeper recording of the same leitmotif and it's just vastly superior, I thought. It has really nice swells throughout it and there's a lot of it in this. Just awesome swells all throughout it that tie really nice with certain scenes. When you get that feeling when music swells and they're trying to pull at you, this movie actually did that to me a few fucking times! And I have no heart! Sometimes they do that to you and it actually offends you because the composer wants to sell you something and "I'm not buying it." Rian Johnson and John Williams were selling the same thing, it was at the right moments. Sandor, Chewy, Holko and 3 others

Popular Post mrbellamy 6,270
While I was initially disappointed at how little new thematic material there seems to be in this score, I am pretty excited about how confident all the reactions are in the music and I'm glad that I know now to basically expect Force Awakens 2.0. My biggest caveat with that score was always that while I enjoy the themes, I wanted more out of them in the underscore so I love that he really seems to be using this score to pay off that material. Of course I did hope that he'd be able to achieve that while also bringing in a lot of new core stuff completely unique to TLJ, but nevertheless it sounds like he's really cementing an identity for this trilogy and it's leaving an impression. crumbs, Remco, curlytoot and 2 others

Jost1 105
While I love the prequel scores as pure music, I am much more of a fan of the organic approach to leitmotif that TFA had, and that seems to be continuing in TLJ.
