Tiny snippets from deleted scenes, I really look forward to those Ahch-To ones, they may end up edited into my preferred version.

Are you making your own fan edit, or are you implying that others may well include them into their edits?

In other words, what I'm asking is, are you a fan editor?

Being a Star Wars fan, it's kind of a requirement :D

To be honest, I only did semi-minor stuff so far, when I deemed it really necessary, like splicing Harmy's Sarlacc scene (no beak) and the bluray Victory Celebration planets with the DVD audio (no Weesa free) into kk650's regraded semi-specialised edition to create my ultimate Frankensteined Jedi. Other than that, I only restored some removed music, I mostly respect the original releases of movies, or the works of editors like Harmy and Adywan who created stuff I couldn't even dream of doing. But seeing how I also don't like how Rey kinda disappeared in TLJ, I'll definitely try to reinsert some of her dropped scenes at the very least as an experiment, but I'll have to see how finished those scenes are first (missing effects, rough CG, all greenscreen, or actually finalised).

Yeah, there's tons of stuff to do! Jawas should blink. Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes are outdated, they should really be playing dubstep now, and be replaced with creatures as fantastically convincing as the face morphs in Kirk's dream in ST4. Mos Eisley should be overtaken by an army of dugs. The lightsaber sound effect also never really worked, let's replace it with Ben Burtt's grandson saying WOOSH WOOSH with some added echoes. While we're at it, why not apply a teal tint to the bluray masters, that should make the (of course nonexistent) discoloring better, right? Oh, and fix one more shot of Luke's lightsaber on the Falcon out of the 15 we fucked up, we'll get there eventually!

I was pleasantly surprised by the last versions which made Wicket's eyes look more in line with the Ewok movie version. In the original version, be had lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes.

Track Escape from Naboo to replace Into the Trap, Hyperspace and The Rebels Escape Again! And The Arena over Vader's entrance to Tanitve IV and Echo Base!

Imagine if Lucas wanted to revamp the music too? He'd do something crazy like use DotF to score Luke and Vader's final duel...

Well, such changes would have helped smooth out some of the musical inconsistencies in the series...

But than, it would feel out of place in the (largely orchestral) palette of the first three films.

Both Lucas and Williams approached these films as a series of connected, but largely stand-alone, pieces. The tweaked versions represent an attempt to bring a unified sense to all those entries (two of which weren't even directed by Lucas, and one not written by him at all) which we must ultimately deem as a failure.

Didn't Mark Hamill jump on the LGBT train and try to say Luke was gay?

No, he said Luke's orientation was open to interpretation by the audience, though in the OT he's clearly portrayed as straight.

Or he could be bi/pansexual, just because he finds Leia attractive doesn't mean he's exclusively straight.

Interesting. I've been wanting to dip my toe into the fan edit waters myself.

May I ask how you are able to remove the existing music track when restoring unused music? For example, the tracked music from Hyperspace over the scene of Luke and Han's rescue.

Have you seen the Target in store promo video, apparently it has a brief snippet of the deleted scenes menu and confirms an alternate opening:

I actually love Hyperspace there, Snowspeeder Rescue doesn't fit the mood at all. I rather put back all the Hoth music that was cut out (tricky, since some shots were longer than the music which was supposed to fit there, some were shorter), Imperial Probe*, the demented pianos when the AT-ATs appear, the first half of the duel between Luke and Vader before the Force theme and Yoda's Theme kick in...

* That one was interesting, since the first half is unused, the middle portion is replaced with the concert version of the Imperial March, and the ending is used. When the transition happens and the Probe version of the March is supposed to kick in, I just put the final suspended note there and left the concert version as is.

OK, here's a video since I can't explain it properly:

I also put back Dianoga and the first half of The Trash Compactor into SW, but RotJ is unsalvageable unless you recreate the entire sound mix from scratch somehow.

I also fiddled a bit with Desolation of Smaug (restoring The Forest River and the Gandalf-Necromancer duel - once I removed Thráin's ridiculous Wilhelm Scream shot, it suddenly fit perfectly!) but that was all lost when I got them on DVD and semi-absentmindenly deleted the files form my HDD.

The bombing shit was totally uninvolving and poorly designed. Carrie and everyone, really, was terrible. Hux? Embarrassing. It was worse acting than the prequels.

Hyperbole much? I assure you, it was nowhere near as bad as the prequels.

The acting is definitely better than the all three prequels. But that makes the acting of the bad guys (Hux, Phasma, Snoke and the occasional admiral) all the more jarring. Even if it were an intentional choice - it didn’t work, to my mind.

As for the opening, its clear that given the film’s length and pace they decided it needed a James Bond opening: a strong action setpiece that: 1. hooks the audience into the movie; 2. sets up the conflict and antagonists; 3. promises more such action later in the film; and 4. works like a self contained short film with its own ebb-and-flow, so by watching it alone you get some sense of satisfaction from the film.

A similar structural choice is applied to several other Star Wars films (Star Wars; The Phantom Menace, Revenge of the Sith, The Force Awakens), most of the Middle Earth films, all of the Indiana Jones features, etc...

When was the last time you've actually watched a Star Wars film? It's common knowledge that many of the side villains/antiheroes in Star Wars tend to be overacted and hammy; it's a common and well-used trope in plenty of other film franchises as well. Every Marvel villain ever. Nearly every Star Trek villain. Thranduil in the Hobbit trilogy just drips with camp. Plenty of Bond villains. Toht, Donovan, and Spalko in the Indiana Jones series are all hammy and laughable.

Serkis's acting was great in Last Jedi; every scene with him was pure gold. Not on the same level as Gollum or Caesar, perhaps, but it was still a great performance.

Sorry, but the prequels are the single most disappointing thing ever. Not to say that TLJ didn't have substantial flaws of its own; pacing, some dialogue, and the fact that it was clear Johnson didn't care who had to clean up his mess, just as long as he could make the Star Wars film he's always wanted to make... but it's still better than the freaking prequels. Don't start thinking wistfully of a past that didn't exist just because the present has turned out to be not much better. Garbage was still garbage, and I don't just 'remember' when we all hated Lucas after TPM and AOTC, we were mad for a good reason, and that reason won't change just because Disney has Star Wars now instead of him...

Don't let time trick you.

"Don't think wistfully of a past that didn't exist?" The fuck you on about, Willis?

Star Wars and Empire were and are great movies. ROTJ and TFA are fun, but flawed and unimaginative. TPM, AOTC, ROTS and TLJ are shit movies with unrelatable characters, but the prequels at least have more interesting action, not great but more coherent plots, better looking ships and aliens and perhaps most importantly better scores.

Also, The Hobbit films are the single most disappointing thing ever.

What? Did you even watch the movie? One of the main points of TLJ is that Luke can still be the hero he once was, despite his failures. What if some kid screws up, and he feels he can't come back from that? I know I've had those moments growing up, and I think it's really cool that TLJ tries to show you that you aren't and never will be defined by your flaws, but by the good that you can do. It's a very human and thoughtful approach to the character; how is that not relatable?

The same goes with characters like Rey, Rose, and Finn: characters that came from humble or rough backgrounds, but eventually overcome their past and go on to do great things. Again, please explain how certain people can not relate to character traits like that.

It might be the closest to the book, and the least cheerless, but its also the least cinematic.

I'd argue BOTFA is the least cinematic of the bunch. At times, it feels like an overlong TV movie.
