Since the year is about to and and the usual Best of-polls are awaiting us i wanted to present a pre-liminary list of possible contenders for the film score category - add at your own leisure. There rarely has been a year where so many worthy additions happened in the last quarter of the year. Even more importantly, most of them for movies no one has seen (or is interested in). So i marked my choices for interesting/worthy scores to listen to before voting bold. Most of it is on Spotify.

That's a recurrent problem on other film music boards, too - hardly anyone seems interested in music if it's not famous catalogue titles re-released C&C which then is slavishly dissected in spreadsheets and so on. There are several worthy (and diverse!) entries this year. And i'm hardly one to hand out false laurels.

Apes. The film is very entertaining and the music accompanies it very well. Besides being one of the best albums of  the recent franchise. In second The Lat Jedi and The Shape of Water that are two great efforts of two talented composers. The two albums are great to revisit often, but still leave the feeling that they could be better. Third, Pemberton, who is proving to be a competent composer and someone who may gain more notoriety in the next few years. Fourth: Battle of the Sexes and Fifth: Victoria and Abdul (I like scores that mirror, even in a caricature, the popular music of certain regions).

The Pemberton is very entertaining, indeed. Especially for such a dire drama prospect. 'The Death of Stalin' is Shostakovich on steroids but still a marvelously entertaining piece of music, as are parts of 'Logan', the Danna, 'Loving Vincent' and 'The Rendezvous'. Check them out.

My Top 10 webcast is coming soon, so I don't want to give away my selections just yet. But beyond the ten titles currently in my Top 10, I have about 22 extra titles that I have to weigh against the preliminary 10. But some of the titles in consideration do indeed feature on publicist's list above.

I'll do it as soon as I can. Thanks for the suggestion.

I feel the same way Karol.  Even Dunkirk only grabs me spiritually in the last two tracks.

Burwell and Beltrami impressed me a lot this year.  Elfman's JL, Desplat's Shape of Water, and the surprise Don Davis offering all left my expectations only vaguely fulfilled.  Zimmer/Wallfisch's two entires are solid, Dunkirk being far superior to BR2049 of course.   I haven't yet heard the Glass or Sakamoto, but I'm interested.  Williams seems to have squeezed more out of The Post than I expected, but it still isn't what it could have been.

Wintory has to be the high point.

I found it surprisingly varied...not talking about grabbing, though. 'Loving Vincent' was probably the most interesting canvas, filmically. Generally, odds and ends were more convincing than whole, often diluted and overlong releases. 'Dunkirk' was effective but really the pits, musically. The Pemberton (All the Money...) and parts of 'Logan' were probably the most original in terms of major releases.
