Today I bought 5 Jerry Goldsmith soundtracks!

All used, but in mint condition. I paid around 5 Euros each.

They are:

The Haunting

Rudy

King Solomon's Mines

The Edge

Chain Reaction

What do you think? Is it a nice haul or what? So now I own around 80 JG scores! :)

I agree with Thor on those two being the best of the bunch, though I like the others too (better in their expanded versions, of course!) Most fans love King Solomon's Mines but it's probably my least favorite of the five.

Not Chain Reaction?

I actually enjoy Chain Reaction and how Goldsmith used the electric guitar in the score. The DE was a noticeable improvement for the score as well.

On the other hand I understand why other people enjoy KSM and it does have its moments...I just haven't really been able to warm to it in general.

1. The Haunting

4. Chain Reaction

All factors considered:

1. The Edge

2. King Solomon's Mines

3. The Haunting

4. Chain Reaction

5. Rudy

KSM just has too many bravura parts to be rated below the others, whereas Rudy's saccharine americana earns far less reward points for either originality or compositon.

Nice! Love The Edge and KSM. Is the latter the Intrada or the Prometheus?

Intrada!

Except for RUDY all the others received expansions and remasters. Did you get those?

Nope.

I got the OST albums, except for KSM.

Since last year I started seriously collecting JG albums, but I don't really know why.

As far as film music goes, I listen to JW 95% of the time, maybe only 5% to JG. But that's for now. Maybe I'll get into a JG phase some day....

At least the kind of sentiment often found in american movies. Which are, thank god, not the only way to handle such things.

I agree, but you also have to agree there are good ways and bad ways of doing this particular sound. I think in the case of RUDY, it's a good way.  It has this sense of undilluted, emotional immediacy and transparency which I really like. I find it more interesting and enjoyable than a lot of Williams' own Americana efforts in recent years, for example.

In a nutshell, you can feel Goldsmith's affinity but sadly also a then-apparent disregard for (almost) everything he once stood for, namely breaking with worn clichés and finding unique musical solutions for the filmic situations at hand. Unsurprisingly, all the testosterone football stuff comes off best, while the endless repetitions of the sugary main theme in the same flat harmonic settings feels like a defeat. It's not 'bad' by any means but it was a playground better suited to guys like Barry, Horner or...ahemm..Portman.

Of course, compared to the junk he often was scoring at the time, 'Rudy' must have felt like a precious gift so i cut it some slack.

Intrada!

Nice! That's the one I have. You just need to correct the audio pitch boost caused by the mastering error (48kHz vs 44.1kHz) using Audacity or similar.
