THE BLACK HOLE is, but MEET JOE BLACK ain't that bad. It's got Anthony Hopkins, for Chrissakes, the second best actor who ever lived!

Both films have their moments...I agree Meet Joe Black is definitely better.

Hey, I thought about you (and @Alexcremers) the other day. A mate of mine has had ringing in his ears for about two weeks now, consistently, since getting a dental crown and I think it's probably tinnitus. The dentist of course is denying they two are related, and he's seeing his GP next week about it.

Anyway, it's driving him nuts.

I thought so too at first but the ear specialist told my there's no connection between dental problems and ears. I had a problematic wisdom tooth removed but the ringing never stopped.

Artistically in open-minded criticism, I find great movies to have an unpredictable range. Based on convention however, the range is fairly predictable. People are too hung up on objectivism in art, in my experience. And thus most artforms: film, music, and literature, tend to be boring copies of copies.

I know what you mean. Real art can be evaluated with objectivism, but it cannot be created with objectivism.

Tell me about it. I've had it since 2011, but it got seriously worse in October last year. It doesn't come and go; it's there 24/7. Now I need a hearing aid with "counter-sound", as well as cognitive therapy.

Try living with back pain.

I'd kill for back pain. Not to make it a morbid competition or anything, but I have about 5 chronic illnesses (out of which tinnitus is one), so if I "only" had back pain to worry about, I'd be blessed.

Feels somehow wrong when a bad film gets a really good score, because the composer is spending their time and creative efforts on something that few people will see or probably care about.

Hence when I see a bad film and the score turns out to be a bit 'meh', it's oddly satisfying that the composer didn't waste their 'best' efforts on it.

Really sorry to hear that mate, especially given your love for music.

Does "white noise" help?

Thank you, Nick. Yes, it helps. I use it for when I go to sleep, for example (a socalled "sound pillow").

But enough about my failing health....back to awesome scores for awful movies!

I'll add The Exorcist II to this list.  I haven't seen in the movie probably 15 years but I remember it was very bizarre and seemed like it was 5 hours long.  Overall not very good.  I remember liking the music, though, particularly Regan's theme.

I hate to mention this, but...JANE EYRE is a pretty terrible TV movie, but, oh, the score...!!!!

The film is not that bad. It's not on Cary Fukunaga's level, obviously, but for a TV movie, it's quite good (even though it leaves out some crucial parts of the book). Of course, what exists at this point is only a crummy-looking VHS taping, so we haven't really seen it in all its "splendour" yet.

Maybe it's filmed on video too.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Such a slow burner...

Although I quite enjoyed it on my first watch so far (the things I can think of that bothered me immensely were the wormhole scene, the weird uniforms and some horrific bifocal shots), I think it would've worked much better as the 50-minute (or double-part) Phase II pilot, like the script was originally planned to be. Goldsmith does help some of the masturbatory effects shots go by faster, though - the Enterprise reveal is an incredibly drawn-out and boring scene with Scotty and Kirk grinning like idiots into the camera while going way more circles around the thing than would be practical, but the Enterprise Waltz makes it amazing and magical.

@raider, you gotta get a better piano arrangement of the Raider's March. ;)

Not with any of it. It's always been my favourite STAR TREK film, and it always will be.

I guess it depends on your criteria. If you're having trouble sleeping, it's great!

I guess it depends on where you stand on Star Trek in general. I watched it right after I finished TOS, loving it, and I enjoyed the movie.

I know. I was just reacting to your dubious reason for concluding the film is awful.

The score is great, but the film, while great-looking, is awful for glorifying Columbus. Plus, from what I've seen, it seems to be a slow, plodding affair, doesn't it?

Haha! My left ear also been ringing for two years! And I'm not 25 yet! I blame the headphones. Mine sounds like a refrigerator or air conditioner. 24 hours a day. But I forget how I usually forget the noises of the devices I quoted.

Sleepy Hollow is a fun movie with a great score, but it's far from being a masterpiece, the same with Wolfman.

It's Ridley Scott between 1982 and 2000. There is not really anything worth watching.

I don't know about that. While definitely not his strongest, he has a couple good films in that period, particularly Thelma & Louise.

Looking at his filmography however, it definitely is a mixed bag, he certainly has his share of clunkers (even most of the clunkers have style though).

Well, his first clunker would be Legend. Then he made a few more clunkers with Someone To Watch Over Me and Black Rain. He made up for that with Thelma And Louise. Then we got three more 'iffy' movies': 1492, White Squall and G.I. Jane. He made up for those three with Gladiator. Hannibal is fun. I can't watch Black Hawk Down (hate its ordinary dumb macho tone) but fortunately Matchstick Men is better again. I was disappointed with Kingdom Of Heaven but the DC is a significant improvement (one of the best Director Cuts around). With A Good Year, the mighty Ridley failed to best a simple film like Under The Tuscan Sun (the perfect women's interest channel movie).  American Gangster was watchable, Body Of Lies was not. Robin Hood is fluffy drivel. With Prometheus I wanted to throw bricks at my Plasma screen. I don't remember much of The Counsellor. Exodus: Gods And Kings is a Ridley Scott trying to give the audience another historic epic but it was clearly a case of underestimating the audience. The first hour of The Martian was amusing. The second part ("Let's bring him home, boys") turned into another completely uninteresting rescue mission. Alien: Covenant might be his new Hannibal

Thelma & Louise, definitely. Legend, too. Parts of White Squall. The rest: mmmmh.

I've already stated that Thelma and Louise is great. I kinda like Legend for the score and because it's got no chance to be good due to the complicated production. The director's cut gives us an impression of what the 2,5h version could have been like.

Legend wouldn't have been any better in longer form (the problems with cast and approach are there from the outset). But there are many wonderful vignettes in it and some 'fantasy' shots that belong to the best the genre has to offer.

Its approach and cast aren't really a problem. The approach is classic and the filmmakers know that and the cast is okay.

The major problem is that the fantasy world and the characters are very pretentious in both 1,5h versions. This is considerably improved in the director's cut with just 20 minutes of more material. Another 40 minutes could unfold a credible and detailed fantasy world that you can dive into like in the Harry Potter movies.
