fililando 19
good evening everyone! I was wondering if books about John's life are already out. If not, do you know if someone is currently following the Maestro to collect his thoughts, opinions, life stories etc. etc.?
Thor 7,478
There are no pure biography books at the present time (to my knowledge). There are a few books, but they're all based on various theses and hence more analytical in nature (a lot in Spanish, for some reason). Some of the authors of these books sometimes post on these boards.
Naïve Old Fart 9,508
Well...his Google biography has quite a lot of information, and Emilio's book has a chapter on JW's life (chapter 5). Personally, I don't like to know much about famous people. IMO, they have a right to private anonymity.
Popular Post Thor 7,478
I have a rather different view, as there are so many things in one's personal life (or just 'life') that ultimately inform and influence the artistic process in various ways. SteveMc, Biodome, crlbrg and 1 other
Naïve Old Fart 9,508
I agree. If they can bring their life experiences to work, then that's probably a good thing, but that JW likes to shoot laudanum, after work? Count me out, it's none of my business

Then I've gotta read it! Naïve Old Fart
Naïve Old Fart 9,508
No, that's definitely not in Emilio's book! I think he'd have the good grace to leave that out. But that's an interesting aspect: what to include, and what to leave out. Jurassic Shark
Jurassic Shark 12,033
Yeah, that's an important balance. I guess it's possible to include a lot of interesting info about JW, which somehow is related to his artistry, without getting too private. Bespin 8,480
Well, it's always the problem of people which have a very boring life... no alcohol problem, no drug, no sex scandals... A biography... ok... about what? Try his discography instead... that's a good start! http://www.goplanete.com/johnwilliams/
Jurassic Shark 12,033
That's already been done by some Canadian guy. Bespin

But thanks for the link. What I wanted to say is that I really like reading composer's biographies (or correspondence) and since Williams is for sure an interesting person it would be a pity if his way of composing, thinking and everything else related to music disappeared forever with him once he's gone. Something like Stravinsky's "Poetics of music" or "Memories and Commentaries".
Jurassic Shark 12,033
Spielberg will surely make a documentary on him in due time. Scored by Alan Silvestri, with story by George Lucas.

Just because there's no drugs or alcohol doesn't mean it's not interesting. The sheer number of entertainment people he associated with from the 50s onwards, and the stories that came with them, is a treasure trove in itself. He hung out with Frank Sinatra, for Chrissakes! There's a code between people who shook Sinatra's hand. He also taught Spielberg about fine wines, and underrated composers.
