Here's the definition of "historical drama" for the purpose of this thread: a film based on or (loosely) inspired by a true story (no fantasy or science fiction!), that takes places in the past.

Note that the Indiana Jones movies are not historical dramas because they're clearly fantasy...

My list:

1. Schindler's List

2. War Horse

3. Saving Private Ryan

4. Memoirs of a Geisha

5. Born on the Fourth of July

6. JFK

7. Catch Me If You Can

8. The Patriot

9. Munich

10. Empire of the Sun

Honourable mentions:

11. Far and Away

12. Seven Years in Tibet

13. Nixon

14. Angela's Ashes

15. Sleepers

Forget it, Bespin, it’s Josh500.

At least you weren’t around when Indy 4 came out and the guy created 5 new polls every day. So much so he even repeated one without realizing!

I've never particularly warmed to this one.

Maybe I need to watch the movie again.

This score is a masterpiece. The more I listen to it, the better it gets.

Not everybody has the same sense of historical drama. I had the best list if you want to know! :pfft:

(Midway and JFK where the only two left out from my previous Top 10)

War movies are not all historical btw.

Now, if you want a list of war movies...

  • 1941
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • Born on the Fourth of July
  • Monsignor
  • Empire of the Sun
  • War Horse
  • The Book Thief

In what way Far & Away is inspired by a true story?

No Schindler's List? :o:(

You've included The Post and not included Schindler's List?

:o

Ok, to each his own but this was out of this world!

By the way, i can't make a list right now, because I'm confused about some films, if they fall in this category or not.

Far & Away is inspired by a true story of Ron Howard's family.

This is such a "common" story, you know there are thousands of such stories that happened back in those days. I mean, two people that came to America struggled to have a good life, then fell in love with each other, and finally got a happy end. That's basically it.

Exactly. So it's not a historical drama, but a work of fiction.

By that standard, every one of the listed films would tend toward the latter category.

I guess you'd call Star Wars a historical drama because it's about people who fall in love, family issues, and after all, we know it takes place "a long time ago"...

It's fiction but against a historical backdrop.

By the way, same thing with Saving Private Ryan. The story of a bunch of soldiers tasked with saving another soldier who lost two brothers.... That's admitttedly fiction. It never happened.

But it's historical fact that the Americans were involved in fighting the Nazis. Or so we're told, at least. ;)

Never a darling around these parts, I adore Seven Years in Tibet.

Love it too!

The main title theme is heartbreakingly gorgeous, with a Tibetan flavour.
