2018 FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION studio sites (featuring music)

Recommended Posts

Now that you mention it, I can't remember if it was the whole TLJ page that appeared later, or only the music section. However it could be that Disney does not regard Solo as worthy of promotion due to it's overall poor reception as a film. Hopefully I'm wrong.

TLJ didn't appear on the Disney FYC site until after the movie was released in the theaters in December, and the score page didn't appear until January as I recall.

I don't think it bodes well that Solo didn't appear right from the get-go on the FYC site.  FWIW, Disney never added The BFG back in 2016.

Wasn't there a physical FYC release for The BFG?  Solo could get an FYC but just not released digitally?

There was a BFG FYC CD :), and it's extremely rare.  I'm aware of only one ever appearing on eBay.

And yes, Solo could be released as an FYC CD without a corresponding digital release.  Though one BAFTA member I'm friends with told me a few years ago that more and more studios were transitioning to digital downloads of the FYC score in lieu of sending out CDs.  Not sure if AMPAS members have seen the same transition or not.

Yeah, I'd say that digital FYCs are more popular in this case. Not sure what the deal is with Solo and the website, but what would keep them from releasing one?

I'll restate that with Rogue One, select cues had to be broken up (some from the OST were non-present). I'm pretty sure these alterations have something to do with the album only featuring material from the original composer (Williams pre-existing themes cut out) and in the case of Solo, there are quite a few OT references but certainly not too much as to hinder them from trying, right?

I don't know how it works, but I want an FYC!

There's removing material with the pre-existing themes and there's also using the film version of everything. That was a rule that came in quite a few years ago, which meant that all score tracks on OSTs had to be the version that appears in the film, and not an alternate.

I think War Horse was one of the first to emerge after that came in, and the FYC is full of film takes.

You mean FYCs, not OSTs.

This might be true. The movie was a box office disaster and the critics hated it. So it has no constituency at all. It is going to get jack at the oscars. So why waste precious campaigning dollars.

If the Solo score is nominated, is that another nomination for Williams since he wrote two themes that were used throughout the score?

I think Williams might be disqualified due to this rule - "No more than one statuette will normally be given in the Original Score category. A second statuette may be awarded when two credited composers function as equal collaborators, each contributing fully to the original dramatic underscore for the film."

Williams was NOT an equal collaborator and did NOT contribute to the score.

First, click on the "Reveal hidden contents" text below the First Man entry to reveal the links.

Next, you can either highlight all of the links and copy/paste them into a download manager (e.g., I use JDownloader 2) OR you can copy each link individually and paste it into a separate browser window.  Your browser will either begin to play the audio (in which case you should be able to "Save Page As" to save the audio file), OR your browser will directly prompt you to save the audio file.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or issues.

In 1975, the shortlist for the Oscar for Best Original Dramatic Score, consisted of:

Richard Rodney Bennett

Jerry Goldsmith

Alex North

Nino Rota (with Carmine Coppola)

and John Williams.

How far we have come.

@thx99 many of the First Man links give me this:

PLEASE SELECT A MOVIE

For whatever reason, on some occasions, when I copy the link and paste it into a new browser window, the browser adds HTML representation of characters such as "%3F" or "%54" in the middle of the link.  I'm not sure why this is happening since those characters are clearly not in my text for the links.

If you see weird characters like this, almost always a "%" sign followed by two characters, delete them from the link in the browser address bar and hit ENTER.

EDIT:  The other option that seems to work is to copy/paste the links into "Notepad" (or other text software), copy an individual link from within Notepad, and then paste that copied link into the browser window.

Gawrsh, most of those folks are dead! I guess that’s why they’re not being nominated anymore.

:) Nice!!  Same with Colette (Thomas Adès), I believe, though only 6 short cues are featured on the FYC site.

Edit:  And On the Basis of Sex (Mychael Danna) as well.

I will double-check them tomorrow, but I’ve been experiencing real issues with “phantom” characters being added to the links in the initial post, most likely by the message board software. I copy the link as I’ve posted it, paste it into a new browser window, and the link fails due to additional characters which are not visible in the text I copied being added in.

Here’s an example, with track 11 of Mary Poppins Returns:

Text copied:

https://www.waltdisneystudiosawards.com/media/toplay/mp/score/11_MagicPapers_pt2.mp3

After pasting into the address bar and hitting enter, the test changes to the following:

https//www.waltdisneystud%EF%BB%BFiosawards.com/media/toplay/mp/score/11_MagicPapers_pt2.mp3%EF%BB%BF

The additional “%EF%BB%BF” characters appear to refer to “byte order markers” which are added into the copied/pasted link for some reason. And they kill the link.

Also, the Walt Disney site is a bit fluky. I seem to have better luck accessing the individual MP3 links AFTER I play on one of the files directly from their site.

Regardless, JDownloader had no issues whatsoever downloading all of the Mary Poppins Returns and Ralph Breaks the Internet MP3 files from the links above.

I did noticed those phantom characters and thought it had something to do with character encoding... What I didn't thought about is that if I played the files in the site that would help accessing the files hahahaha That worked at the end, Thanks :)
