Holy Grails 2018

Two questions:

What are your 10 Holy Grails right now?

Which former Holy Grails have been completed  since 2015?

Please, exculde the two big franchises, Star Wars and Indiana Jones, because they would occupy the lists almost completely in most cases.

My Holy Grails:

  1. Amistad
  2. War of the World
  3. The Witches of Eastwick
  4. Mulan
  5. Air Force One
  6. JFK
  7. Born on the Fourth of July
  8. U.S. Marshals
  9. Minority Report
  10. Leviathan

Former Holy Grails:

  1. The Lost World
  2. Jurassic Park
  3. A.I. Artificial Intelligence
  4. The Ghost and the Darkness
  5. Dracula
  6. The Mummy
  7. Small Soldiers
  8. The Haunting
  9. The Omen
  10. Papillon

So in general it was a good treat:

  1. The Lost World
  2. Jurassic Park
  3. A.I. Artificial Intelligence
  4. Amistad
  5. The Ghost and the Darkness
  6. Dracula
  7. War of the Worlds
  8. The Witches of Eastwick
  9. The Mummy
  10. Mulan
  11. Air Force One
  12. Small Soldiers
  13. JFK
  14. Born on the Fourth of July
  15. The Haunting
  16. The Omen
  17. Papillon
  18. U.S. Marshals
  19. Minority Report
  20. Leviathan

I don't think I have any Holy Grails apart from Matessino doing all of HP-IJ-SW at the moment.

Maybe the 2 HTTYDs, but neither are missing essential material.

Complete Hobbits would be nice but what they include would be tricky and I'd need a few listens before committing, they wouldn't be an instabuy.

This may change in the coming weeks when I finally watch War Horse or something.

I only have releases I haven't bought yet but planning to as Grails.

Since you're excluding Star Wars, Middle-Earth and Harry Potter, I really don't have any "holy grail" scores right now (other than those). But as your thread title doesn't limit this to scores....

I want to see Deep Space Nine on Blu-Ray, that's my Holy Grail. And it's truly a Holy Grail, because it's something that will likely never be attainable.

I'd also like to see one of my favourite films, Educating Rita, properly released on Blu-Ray. It was recently released on BD in the UK, but the damn thing was taken from a transfer that was apparently created for a UK DVD and thus suffers from PAL speed up, making it worthless to me. Hopefully there will be a US release soon.

Well I got Ten Commandments, Lost World, and Rocketeer in ‘16.  Sky Captain and Mummy more recently.  Those are the most recent true grails that finally got released for me.  I of course loved getting ET and CE3K last year but they weren’t grails at the time.

Secret of Nimh is definitely still a grail.  Azkaban remains number 1.

I probably have more film holy grails than soundtrack ones now. Classics that never made the jump to Blu-ray like Captian Blood, The Sea Hawk, Arsenic and Old Lace and Scaramouche, and newer films that apparently aren't considered commercially worthwhile enough, like De Palma's Femme Fatale and Leconte's La fille sur le pont.

One of my remaining soundtrack holy grails is a complete Hallelujah Trail, which will never happen because the original recording is destroyed and nobody cares enough to do a re-recording.

My holy grails?

World peace,

An end to poverty and hunger,

Governments working together and being accountable,

A decent education system,

No more fear.

In the big scheme of things, getting that extra 2 minutes of music, is crass, in the extreme.

I find 'holy grail' a curious term to use in this case, since it implies something almost unattainable, i.e. something unreleased. Most, if not all, of the titles in this thread already have perfectly fine soundtrack releases. They're out there.

So I say what I always say in these threads -- anything completely unreleased by Elfman, Goldenthal and Williams (in particular STORY OF A WOMAN, ALCOA PREMIERE THEATRE and the symphony as my top three 'holy grails' for the latter). Plus a few other things, like score-only releases of Faltermeyer's FLETCH and TOP GUN or Moroder's SCARFACE.

The machines tried that. People wouldn't accept it.

Star Trek is too big a franchise for them to not upgrade the SD series. They need to milk them during the Trekkies' lifetimes and secure their future. It's just a matter of time.

Is there really anything substantial not included on the expanded release? The end credits suite is just awful and sounds like it was written in half an hour, so I hope you're not referring to that.

Substantial?  It's been a long time since I've seen the film so don't remember specifically what all the unreleased cues sound like, but the 1CD Varese Deluxe Edition is NOT complete, and I'd very much appreciate a 2CD complete version with all the cues.

Well, I think even the OST is too long (second half has a fair share of uninteresting cues), but if there are some good, unreleased cues I wouldn't mind interchanging them with the uninteresting ones.

@Jay, except the franchise scores, you have only 4 John Williams Holy Grails and one if them is The BFG? That's very evil!

What about Dracula, TWoE, Bot4J, JFK, Amistad, Minority Report and WotW? No love for the older non-franchise scores?

I would happily buy ALL of those without question, but I wouldn't consider any of them holy grails.  Most of those I haven't even listened to the OST that many times

It would be easy to just throw everything the man's ever written onto a grail list, but I tried to pair it down to more personal favorites

I'd take expansions of all these over a complete Stargate. :)

Now THAT’S what I’m talking about! Proper holy grails!

You don't find it to be too repetitive in the latter half?

Not really. It’s a bit too action-heavy for my taste nowadays, but the nostalgia overrides it.

I don't think anything is missing, but I would love to buy a nice 2CD set of JUST that score.  I didn't drop $500 to own the entire box set.

Basically take all the NBXM material from discs 6, 14, and 16 and make a proper 2CD set out of it, with better sound quality (some of the instrumental tracks sound iffy)
