Anyone else more disenchanted with Star Trek?

Recommended Posts

It's true that the drinks in Star Trek have gotten much less manly over the years. We've gone from Romulan Ale to Early Grey Tea to, as you said, soy lattes. The latter of which we can all agree is not manly at all. In fact, there's nothing less many than a soy latte. It's less manly than quiche and show tunes combined. So you've got a really good point there.

Would you say the uniforms have gotten less manly as well?

Actually the uniforms have improved over the years. The OS uniforms looked great and comfortable, but the TMP ones were so 70s yuck and the 80s movie uniforms looked so fucking impractical.

I never cared for the TNG ones at all, but the ones in FC onwards are okay.

I love the uniforms in the Abrams flicks. Look nice and comfy.

I'm still on the fence about the Discovery uniforms.

Klingon Gagh. Now that's a manly meal!

Especially when served live!

To address the topic, I was born right around the time Deep Space Nine started, and practically no one in my life was into Star Trek. It was only a few years ago that I was introduced. Watching The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, I marvel and imagine what it would've been like to watch such great science fiction week after week, as they aired. There's nothing I know that is quite like these two shows, and when Discovery was announced, I was excited to see Star Trek return to the television...from all accounts, however, it seems that Discovery is not my idea of Star Trek, and I certainly don't want to pay for CBS All Access to find out.

Still, I hold hope for a Star Trek series that captivates the imagination, providing compelling and provoking scenarios that reflect the issues that can be difficult to face today, and makes us want to travel the stars.

I was never a big STAR TREK fan in the first place, so very little disenchantment taking place. Silly "goofball" stuff. True, there was a period in my teens and early 20s when I saw the films and periodically TNG, but that's about it. Perhaps an episode or two of the other shows. However, I really liked the recent STAR TREK series on Netflix -- the first time I've really liked something related to this franchise.

Honestly, I don't see how anyone can't like Star Trek, particularly TOS.

Yeomen in short skirts, hand to hand combat, Gorns, green booze, starships, Spock, Shatner and space hippies. Men were men and sometimes women were too.

What's not to love?

Haven't gone past TOS; haven't had anything to disillusion me! (No, Spock's Brain, And the Children Shall Lead and Final Frontier don't count)

DS9 brother. DS9.

Either you saw the wrong episodes, or this is a very strange surface-level judgment.

Nope. As I said earlier -- seen several episodes in all of the incarnations (esp. TNG), as well as all the films. I just don't like it very much, the whole 'camp' of it all. I tend to have a problem with 'pointy ear sci fi' in general (with a few exceptions, like BABYLON 5 and STAR WARS), if that's any comfort. But there are exceptions: I like the long, slow takes of TMP which everyone else hates, and I think the new Netflix series is quite good, which seems to be disliked by the hardcore ST fans. Probably because it's the most serious and dark of the lot, which is more up my alley.

I don't understand exactly what you mean by camp--keep in mind I haven't watched the original series, though. Do you mean stuff like costumes? If you don't like the trappings, then of course that's your right, but I just don't see how one can just brush the content of the whole series as "camp".

What on earth is St John Talbot doing dressed up as Chancellor Gorkon, dressed up as a Cardassian?!

And Ras Al Ghul! (Can I get a spell check on that?)

Damn I wish I had a voice as cool as David Warner.

I think Star Trek, much like Doctor Who had a time where it shone bright, but unlike Doctor Who which had to go through several evolutionary stages and took big risks, Star Trek had a heyday, ran it's course with TNG. DS9 and Voyager had some great moments but that felt like an extension of TNG.

The films are good, not great, but good. I'm glad Abrams got to do the reboot, everything looks slick and futuristic and the performances are okay too. Everyone loves to hate on Giacchino, but they're some of his best scores, and some of the better scores of their respective years.

I'm optimistic this little notch or groove we're stuck in now with the TV series will disappear and future Trek series beyond Discovery ( Beyond Discovery) will get back to making good shit.

I actually think dear mattress from the other thread might have a better cause rallying against Trek than he does Wars.

I'm more open to DOCTOR WHO (I've seen every single episode since the dawn of time; even the ones that only exist as audio!) -- also extremely campy at times, but there's something about the writing and the "Britishness" of it all that ables me to look beyond those quirks in a way I can't with STAR TREK. I just think I'm almost biologically adverse to everything STAR TREK is and stands for. And moreso now than in my formative years, when I was still searching for my sci fi prefences or "voice".

To make me even more unpopular, I can also use this opportunity to say that I don't like James Bond. Except for the Craig movies, which are more JASON BOURNE in style. And to a certain extent the Brosnans.

Less camp, more serious, "realistic" action, characters and locales. This is true for all Craig Bonds, thankfully. I've always had an extreme issue with 'camp', especially unintentional. Other values need to be ridiculously good in order to cover over that. I didn't watch Bond films during my childhood or formative years, so I have no nostalgic connection to them. I watched them for the first time as an adult, and just saw straight through their sheer stupidity.

STAR TREK is a bit different. They had a kind of mild appeal as a youngster and young adult, but then the disenchantment came around the mid 2000s or thereabouts.

and much more emphasis on the brutality of the action scenes. I'm thinking Casino Royale, especially.

Skyfall is Nolan inspired if anything.

The move to more serious, somber and more dramatic cinema hardly started with Nolan. Its a natural progression or maturation of the art-form.

More dramatic, is how I like to call it.

We've just been moving from more pure action films, to action-dramas of sorts. And you can't have drama without significant and profound low points for the characters.

That's a very different thing than being "Bourne inspired". Skyfall is Nolan inspired if anything.

The whole Craig era is heavily inspired by Bourne. Again, I'm not only talking about the action sequences, but the music, the way the "exotic" locales is photographed, the more nuanced villains and characters and so on and so forth. And yes, that includes SKYFALL.

Mendes' sense of action is much more fluid, though, and his color palette less desaturated.

True. They're not carbon copies. They are just -- like all post-Bourne action movies, also outside Bond -- inspired by the whole philosophy and approach of the seminal Liman film from 2002.

He's got a point Quintus.

Have you ever noticed that the hull of the Enterprise has gotten less and less phallic over the years?

Don't even get me started on the shape of the Enterprise D deflector dish. You can't unsee that.

I think it's time we start taking Drax and Mattris seriously.
