The film is directed by Dome Karukoski (Tom of Finland) and stars Nicholas Hoult, Lily Collins, Tom Glynn-Carney, Craig Roberts and Colm Meaney. The movie tells the story of author J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Ringsbooks, as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school and serves as a British soldier in World War I. David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford (Pride) wrote the screenplay. Peter Chernin (War for the Planet of the Apes, Oblivion), Jenno Topping (Hidden Figures, The Greatest Showman) and David Ready (Red Sparrow) are producing the project for Chernin Entertainment, alongside Kris Thykier (Kick-Ass, The Debt) for Archery Pictures. If this is a serious biographical film, I'm thinking less funky instruments? Maybe something along the lines of Meet Joe Black or Little Women. Even for autopilot Newman, there's a little too much syrup and too little flavour for my tastes. Though I wasn't really expecting anything new for what seems like a fairly by-the-book drama anyway. The Illustrious Jerry 3,356 Posted April 22, 2019 Share Posted April 22, 2019 Yeah, I'd say it seems more like auto-pilot Newman than anything too breakthrough and exciting. Newman is quite an interesting composer, IMO. Between delectable WALL-E, headlining Finding Nemo and Shawshank Redemption and enjoyable Bridge of Spies, he's really one of my favourite film composers in those instances. However, things got a little too Newman-y for me with, say, Saving Mr. Banks. I'll listen to Tolkien once over, but I don't expect too many other times based on what I hear.
