Popular Post Quintus 5,399
By chance I happened on a cover of Anakin's theme on YouTube, which was nice enough, but the best thing about it was that it made me want to give the original another listen, for the first time in about ten years. Oddly and in retrospect, I never really got along with this cue and theme all that well back when it debuted on the OST, and less so once I'd eventually heard its sparse use in the film itself. But listening to it again just now (a number of times actually), it almost felt like I'd heard it anew with fresh ears. I'm aware that my tastes in music have changed or evolved fairly recently (I'm also all Star Warsed out), but suddenly I find this cue to be quite marvelous. I already appreciated its foreshadowing ingenuity of course, but specifically listening to the LSO's playing of the track (SW music has plenty of great rerecordings, but no other version of this particular cue gets ANYWHERE close to the original), I can't help but now consider it an absolute top tier post Schindler's List Williams composition. The structure of the theme; the weirdly harmonic turmoil of it, the way the notes seem to be bat back and fourth as if they struggle to resolve into a melody (a clever trick), it's seriously impressive stuff. But then when the theme suddenly soars for the intuitive "Star Warzy" payoff of it, we're safely relaxed back into familiar territory for what is expected from characters in this universe. And then the devilishly resourceful descent into Vadar's signoff... well it's a frankly genius example of deep musical storytelling and underscore as character development. So the fact that the theme is all but entirely WASTED in the film/s... it's a downright tragedy: and another reminder that in 1999, Williams too had great optimism and interest in a brand new trilogy of Star Wars movies. Listening to Anakin's theme today, it's proof to me that he undertook his own obligations with everything he could muster. Which is to say you're getting full fat virtuoso Williams with this sadly overlooked piece. /impromptu gushing post Once, Fabulin and Demondm810
The Illustrious Jerry 3,356
I literally had the same thought the other day. I heard Anakin's Theme and thought: "Criminy, why didn't I like this again?". The Phantom Menace has so many great cues to revisit and remind yourself of. publicist 4,643
Found 'Project X' really lame and sold it in the early 2000's. After Horner died i took out the old cd rip et voila...the old Horner charme had me hooked again. No idea why it hated it back then. Richard Penna 3,687
I find 'rediscovering' a good way to decide whether I actually need a score in my regular listening. After my last housekeeping phase I would have melodies or phrases pop into my head from scores I'd deleted and would go and retrieve those tracks.
