LLLCD 1469

Music by Wojciech Kilar

Limited Edition of 3000 Units

RETAIL PRICE: $34.98

La-La Land Records, Sony Pictures, Sony Music and American Zoetrope proudly present a three-disc remastered and expanded re-issue of acclaimed composer Wojciech Kilar’s (THE PIANIST, THE NINTH GATE) original score to the renowned 1992 feature film BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA, starring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins, and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Composer Kilar’s score is a notable and breathtaking work – a lush, masterful orchestral swirl of dread, beauty, suspense and sensuality… The perfect complement to Coppola’s surreal gothic masterwork. Disc One and Two of this deluxe re-issue presents the premiere of Kilar’s “composed score,” his music as originally written for the film. Disc Two also features a bounty of alternate bonus cues from this material. Disc Three showcases the acclaimed original 1992 album assembly, remastered, with additional bonus tracks. Produced by Dan Goldwasser and mastered by James Nelson, this special limited edition re-issue contains exclusive, in-depth liner notes from writer Tim Greiving and sumptuous, blood-thirsty art design by Goldwasser. This release is limited to 3000 units.

A friend saw this up at LLL briefly yesterday, but when he refreshed it was gone again. Imagine if that had happened with Potter!

Anyway, this should be interesting. I don't know the story behind how the score was written, but the album seems very much like an extensive edit of the music as written, and the film itself also mostly seems to use the same pieces over and over again in a Leone fashion. If there's an actual "intended score", there could be quite a bit of new stuff there. Also the chase music is missing on the CD, and I'm sure the dry sound can be improved.

I'd be amazed if it was. Something tells me he wrote very little actual music and then they orchestrated/performed it in different ways. So it might be very repetitive. But an interesting and unexpected release. I'm interested to find out what the sound quality is like.

Never dreamed that Dracula would get a release like this! 3 discs?! One of my earlier memories of actually noticing music in a film. I hid under the stairs while my brother was watching it back when it came out. I was too young at the time.

I saw the movie once but it wasn’t very interesting to me at the time.

This may be one of those blind purchases that’s worth taking a gamble on.

You'll be surprise how much music didn't make it into the film. I have a demo tape from 1992 with what was going to be released on the soundtrack but eventually got cut. Theirs a waltz theme that was never in the film a theme for Harker and Mina that was cut from the film.

What Dracula riches! Within a few months, Williams' '79, Kilar's '92, Bernard's '58 (planned for this Halloween but coming next year rerecorded from Tadlow) - two of those I'm ecsatic about and I'll have to see the samples for the '92 one - from the film, I mostly just remember the motif that was stolen for the Blood Ritual in Curse of the Black Pearl.

The samples have definitely not convinced me that I'd need 3 discs of this right away, but they have 100% convinced me that this is a score well worth looking into.

Don't know nuttin' bout no expanded release, but what a great score! And film! Undoubtedly the best Dracula film of all time, IMO, and one of the foremost films of the 90s. But if someone put a gun to my head, I would probably go for the Williams as the favourite Dracula score.

Music sounded like a bunch of sledgehammering to me when I tried listening awhile ago, but perhaps I wasn’t listening closely enough.

If you enjoy Elfman’s Wolfman score you should definitely enjoy this.  It’s the original ;)

I ended up using a script like this that works with iTunes on Mac.  The tagging wasn’t perfect but it sure made my life easier!
