That is number one for COS? From what I've recall that didn't stand out in the movie at all. Is there something I missed? (Note that I don't have the set yet.)

The early versions of Patronus and Dementor material are among the very best material on this set. Pity both those tracks are so brief. They remind me of both Close Encounters and the Nexus material from Star Trek: Generations

My selections aren't ranked, they're just listed in the order they appear in the set.....

This cue may not be a top ranked one for many, but I right now just can't stop listening to "Time Past/Saving Buckbeak"!

I love this sneaky, conspiratorial, and somewhat existential atmosphere that JW conjures. A long (nearly 10 minutes!), beautiful piece of film music, in perfect quality. Ah, a dream! :)

Literally my most listened to track in the set. I love it!

Glad I'm not the only one who realizes how phenomenally well this entire sequence is scored! It's deceptively simple, but also deeply and profoundly affecting. Almost hypnotic in its rhythm and quietly unsettling, almost hysterical drive.

This might be for PoA what "Ludlow's Speech" is for TLW, only much longer! :)

Let's see. Here's my 10 from each (in the order they appear on the set)

HP1:

  1. Diagon Alley and The Gringotts Vault [Extended Version]
  2. Through the Doors
  3. Fighting the Troll
  4. Cast a Christmas Spell
  5. Filch’s Fond Remembrance
  6. The Chess Game [Extended Version]
  7. Gryffindor Wins the House Cup
  8. Nimbus 2000
  9. Teaser
  10. Trailer

HP2 (This one was HARD to narrow down):

  1. The Escape From the Dursleys
  2. The Train Station and The Flying Car
  3. The Writing on the Wall
  4. Quidditch, Second Year
  5. Christmas Break
  6. The Spiders Attack
  7. Fawkes Heals Harry
  8. Prologue: Book II [Alternate]
  9. Car Drives Off [Alternate Segment]
  10. Television Commercial No. 3

HP3 (This was EVEN harder):

  1. The Knight Bus [Extended Version]
  2. Trouble Takes Many Forms
  3. Befriending the Hippogriff
  4. Summoning the Patronus
  5. Buckbeak’s Fate and The Marauder’s Map
  6. Time Past / Saving Buckbeak
  7. The Rescue of Sirius
  8. The Firebolt and End Credits Suite
  9. The Firebolt [Alternate]
  10. Teaser

Overall, ranked in order of favorites:

  1. The Rescue of Sirius
  2. Teaser (from "Prisoner of Azkaban")
  3. The Firebolt and End Credits Suite
  4. Time Past / Saving Buckbeak
  5. Trouble Takes Many Forms
  6. Fighting the Troll
  7. Teaser (from "Philosopher's Stone")
  8. Quidditch, Second Year
  9. The Spiders Attack
  10. Gryffindor Wins the House Cup

Damn there is so much goodness on this set. This was tough! CoS and PoA had over 15 each on my first go through of this.

The ghost song was already on the OST... the music box passage is one of your favorite pieces of unreleased music?

Not necessarily. I more so like how they're presented here together in one track. Also I had utterly forgotten the ghost song was on the OST. Huh. It's been awhile.

True, but this was one of those tracks I felt like I was hearing for the first time again because of the new mix. And now with the opening 50 seconds it's perfect. You've got a bit of Dursley's, and all the big, magical themes coming back in for the first time in the film. I just love it. I do remember missing that opening when listening to the OST for CoS, I just appreciate that it's all here.

Sure, but the opening two minutes is awesome! I really like the performance on the Platform 9 3/4 portion, and having it together with the Flying Car is great.

Blimey. Was it really? I again felt like I was hearing this for the first time. I've been away from the Potter music longer than I thought...

Again. Damnit. It was? Welp. This set has certainly made me revisit music that I had apparently strayed from for far too long! LOL.

I think I'll amend the lists for 1 and 2, since I clearly did not remember what was actually on the OST.

HP1:

  1. Diagon Alley and The Gringotts Vault [Extended Version]
  2. Harry Gets His Wand
  3. Through the Doors
  4. Fighting the Troll
  5. Filch’s Fond Remembrance
  6. The Chess Game [Extended Version]
  7. Gryffindor Wins the House Cup
  8. Nimbus 2000
  9. Teaser
  10. Trailer

HP2:

  1. The Escape From the Dursleys (Keeping this)
  2. The Train Station and The Flying Car (This too)
  3. Whomping Willow and The Car Escapes
  4. The Writing on the Wall
  5. Quidditch, Second Year
  6. Harry Is a Parselmouth
  7. Christmas Break
  8. Prologue: Book II [Alternate]
  9. Car Drives Off [Alternate Segment]
  10. Television Commercial No. 3

@Jay Looks like it's time for me to Pop-In my OSTs again. XD

I agree sooo much! A wonderful piece of pure tension! And the details... Despite the apparently repetitive character of the piece (and the almost complete absence of "lyrical" themes), there is so much stuff going on in every bar... But my favourite part is the beginning (first couple of minutes). When you watch the movie, at that point you really get the expectation that something outstanding is going to happen.

I also agree with everyone on this. Such a great track!

This cue has always been one of my holy grails!

I especially love the transition of the previously unreleased material (Hermione asking "Is that what my hair looks from behind?") to the OST material... Harry starting to approach Buckbeak.

Pure adrenaline and excitement!!

The Rescue of Sirius (numero uno unreleased cue - dwarfs anything else)

Yeah, it's up there in my PoA Top 3!

What nobody has mentioned so far is "Confrontation in the Shrieking Shack"! Love this (in turn) terrifying, creepy, and dangerous piece...

It was on my list that went to 18-ish tracks. It got bumped cutting it down to 10. But I agree. Absolutely a highlight for sure.

Another PoA highlight: "Buckbeak Saves the Day"!

Love JW's (over)dramatic fight music when Buckbeak kicks the werewolf's ass, and then the strings going  suddenly glissando as Buckbeak turns around, like, "Whatchoo looking at?" At 1:35

This list is rubbish, by the way, I keep changing my mind. There's so much good stuff.

I haven't listened to Prisoner of Azkaban yet.

Are you waiting for Christmas day to do that? :)

Not necessarily. I just started with Philosopher's Stone and I had to let it sink in before moving on to Chamber of Secrets. I like to take my time, get familiar with the individual scores and listen to them as separate entities. That said, the gap between CoS and Azkaban will probably be much shorter than between PS and CoS. CoS is not quite as overwhelming to me as PS was.

I'm now starting to focus on Philosopher's Stone!

My top 3 PS cues so far.... And I find that the scenes are also fantastic!

In the "Sorting Hat" scene, I love how JW gives each student their own unmistakable identity. Malfoy already gets this menacing, evil music, while Susan Bones (Chris Columbus' real-life daughter!) gets this soft, tender music. Also, of course, Harry, Ron, and Hermione... But they're all really just kids! 😂
