The early versions of Patronus and Dementor material are among the very best material on this set. Pity both those tracks are so brief. They remind me of both Close Encounters and the Nexus material from Star Trek: Generations

Literally my most listened to track in the set. I love it! 

 

I was hoping it could have been the disc 2 opener, but there ended up being so many bonus tracks there was no wiggle room.

Glad I'm not the only one who realizes how phenomenally well this entire sequence is scored! It's deceptively simple, but also deeply and profoundly affecting. Almost hypnotic in its rhythm and quietly unsettling, almost hysterical drive.

 

This might be for PoA what "Ludlow's Speech" is for TLW, only much longer!

The Dark Forest (the subject of many problematic volume changes in the sessions)

 

Having the original teaser music for PS is also nostalgically significant. I remember seeing the trailer back in 2001 and there's something about the Hedwig statement just after 'There's so such thing as magic!' which is subtly different from other performances.

 

I'm still discovering things in CoS because the sessions were a bit overwhelming when they first emerged and I never fully listened to them.

Not necessarily. I more so like how they're presented here together in one track. Also I had utterly forgotten the ghost song was on the OST. Huh. It's been awhile.

True, but this was one of those tracks I felt like I was hearing for the first time again because of the new mix. And now with the opening 50 seconds it's perfect. You've got a bit of Dursley's, and all the big, magical themes coming back in for the first time in the film. I just love it. I do remember missing that opening when listening to the OST for CoS, I just appreciate that it's all here.

Sure, but the opening two minutes is awesome! I really like the performance on the Platform 9 3/4 portion, and having it together with the Flying Car is great.

I agree sooo much! A wonderful piece of pure tension! And the details... Despite the apparently repetitive character of the piece (and the almost complete absence of "lyrical" themes), there is so much stuff going on in every bar... But my favourite part is the beginning (first couple of minutes). When you watch the movie, at that point you really get the expectation that something outstanding is going to happen.

Like others have written, somewhat early for me to pick. It's all so good. (Although surprisingly the Children's Suite from HP1 has not really grabbed me like I thought it would.)

 

One thing that has really leaped out to me about the movies and music is how enjoyable these are in listening to the full sets of music. This is especially true for Azkaban. (I've always loved the soundtracks to all 3 films.) I think Azkaban's presentation on the OST did a great job of showing the breadth of music in that film - it's somewhat staggering the genres and instruments used. Yes, in hearing all of the music together, I feel an even deeper appreciation for the craft that went into the work. It's like I was previously only hearing every other phrase of the music but not the totality.

 

I feel the same to a lesser extent with regards to HP1 and 2 which is to take nothing away from those scores - it's just how much Azkaban has jumped for me. The score is pushing up there with Temple of Doom and Close Encounters for my top, top JW complete scores.

 

I am in awe at the amount of work that went into this box set and deeply appreciative to La-La Land and Mike M. for the work. $100 is expensive, but there is no doubt for me the craft and love is there 10x that amount in the release.

This cue has always been one of my holy grails!

 

I especially love the transition of the previously unreleased material (Hermione asking "Is that what my hair looks from behind?") to the OST material... Harry starting to approach Buckbeak.

It was on my list that went to 18-ish tracks. It got bumped cutting it down to 10. But I agree. Absolutely a highlight for sure.

Love JW's (over)dramatic fight music when Buckbeak kicks the werewolf's ass, and then the strings going  suddenly glissando as Buckbeak turns around, like, "Whatchoo looking at?" At 1:35

Not necessarily. I just started with Philosopher's Stone and I had to let it sink in before moving on to Chamber of Secrets. I like to take my time, get familiar with the individual scores and listen to them as separate entities. That said, the gap between CoS and Azkaban will probably be much shorter than between PS and CoS. CoS is not quite as overwhelming to me as PS was.

My top 3 PS cues so far.... And I find that the scenes are also fantastic! 

 

In the "Sorting Hat" scene, I love how JW gives each student their own unmistakable identity. Malfoy already gets this menacing, evil music, while Susan Bones (Chris Columbus' real-life daughter!) gets this soft, tender music. Also, of course, Harry, Ron, and Hermione... But they're all really just kids! 😂
