Kevin Kaska - Inferno For Orchestra

I saw this on Erik Wood's twitter. Really great bombastic theme based action writing. I hear some Williamsisms.

I've no idea who this guy is but lets hope he gets a big break soon. I see he is currently working as an orchestrator on The Orville.

Didn't he do the by ear reconstructions of Williams' Superman for Varese Sarabande re-recording?

Karol

Based off the sketches I thought.

I always confuse Kevin Kaska with Jay Gruska, for some reason -- probably because they both have a John Williams connection (Kaska sharing space with Williams on the trumpet concerto album, Gruska because he's a film/TV composer who used to be Williams' son-in-law). Throw Kevin Kiner in there too, even if he has no Williams connection.

Check out his incredible score for War of the Vendée.  It's quite Williamsesque, but never descends to the level of pastiche.  A couple of his tone poems also sound just like they could have been unused music from the prequels.

What about Greg Kinnear?

It's Kaska a Williams protégé? And/or some distant relation?

Not to my knowledge. But I wouldn't be surprised if they've met.

He works with John Debney and Zimmer. You can hear some of his stuff on Lair.

Zimmer too? Quite the contrast from Williams and Debney!

The tracks he wrote for Lair are pretty great.

This "Inferno" reminds me of them.

No, but it's the title of a movie he scored (a rather disappointing one after the brilliant first two in the series).

He’s been one of his orchestrators since The Dark Knight, I believe.

Scoring both the clone wars and rebels is not williams' connection enough?

He, he. I guess if Kaska counts, then Kiner counts too.

Hear, hear, Zimmer here

Wow, that's different from the usual!

Indeed I hear the "Lair" in there.

Sounds like Zimmer and Kaska are a good match.

Kaska was a student at Berklee in Boston when Williams was still music director of the Pops. It was some kind of effort to commission young talent, and ( I believe there is indeed someplace online where you can read all about this, maybe his website), he was chosen by the family concert conductor and shown to Williams who gave the OK to commission him, the result being a harp concerto for Ann Hobson Pilot.

The concerto itself is awful, cheap sounding, poorly orchestrated, and what makes it so cheap is that you can hear where he actually copy and pasted lines from not one or two composer, but a lot (mostly Salzedo, Copland and Williams), and generally speaking it's a boring piece.
