Isaac, Zimmer, Batista, Villeneuve, ... where are the surprises? The outside the box thinking?

Well, something has to pull in audiences, and I doubt the source material is going to do any of that...

I haven’t checked the Discord in awhile. Anything interesting going on over there?

I'm not THAT big a Zimmer fan, but I've got nothing against him, and when of his scores lands with me it tends to land big.  Interstellar, Inception, the Batman scores, Blade Runner 2049; those are all terrific.  Something tells me he's going to knock this one out of the park; and since Dune is my all-time favorite novel, that means I'm suddenly even more excited than I already was for this movie.  And that's saying something.

Well, the replacement of Johannsson with Zimmer didn't suddenly turn BR 2049 into a big hit either, so Villeneuve should stick to his artistic guns, that is, if he has any.

Nothing against Zimmer, but I would like to see such great directors as Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve collaborating with other interesting composers:

Vangelis (Blade Runner)
Peter Gabriel (The Last Temptation of Christ)
John Murphy (28 Days Later)
Elliot Goldenthal (Alien 3)
Christopher Young (Hellraiser)
Trevor Jones (From Hell)
Howard Shore (Crash)
Cliff Martinez (Only God Forgives)

Any of these would offer a very fresh range of sound, if only they had the chance to be part of one of these movies more often.

Hopefully this movie will allow Hans to explore some new musical avenues.

Who would have been a more interesting, fitting, and most importantly, realistic choice in your estimation?

I don't think my preferences are very realistic, I admit that. But I still wish he went beyond the predictable for someone else. I am tired of Zimmer automatically being the go-to man for your promising blockbuster.

Goldenthal would have certainly been up there among my top choices, but I admit, it is not very realistic. Same with Brian Eno and Cliff Martinez (he is more realistic than Eno) if it is an electronic score, I tend to prefer their more ambient sounds over Zimmer who is usually more bombastic.

Shore in more alternative/experimental mode or Newman (who doesn't seem like a good fit on paper, but who usually delivers) would also interest me far more than Zimmer.

I agree with some of these, especially Goldenthal, Shore and Martinez. Maybe Vangelis too, but he is almost retired now.

Gabriel would interest me too, at least if he could deliver something like Christ again.

I prefer Zimmer over Murphy, Young and Jones.

I was referring to the all-star cast. No way studios would have let Villeneuve get away with a bunch of unknowns.

But yea, I'm curious to see how they're going to sell this to audiences.

Of course it's not. Obviously it is 2005. The third Star Wars film is coming out in 2 months!

You don't need the internet to know Dune has always been a terrible book and Frank Herbert might possibly be as bad or worse than GRRM.

My favourite book is THE SHINING, and when I subsequently saw the movie, I was impressed by how good it was, and how close it was to my experience reading it. The LOTR adaptations aren't too shabby either, even though many claimed it was unfilmable. So this is perfectly doable.

I've never read DUNE (my first exposure to this universe was actually the computer games in the 90s), but its 'gung ho' film history (the Jodorowsky project, the Lynch film) tells me it's something out of the ordinary; not your run-of-the-mill space opera (spice opera?). Needs visionary filmmakers, so I'm confident it's in good hands. Whether he succeeds or not, remains to be seen.

Musically, it also calls for something other than your standard 'sci fi/fantasy' orchestral sound in the neoromantic tradition. Pink Floyd was supposed to have done the Jodorowsky film, Toto did the Lynch and Graeme Revell did a wonderful 'world music' score for the series. It would have been cool if they had attempted a similar 'import' approach for this film, but Hans Zimmer is about the closest you can get among film score specialists -- especially since Vangelis is retired.

I think it is the visual representation of several of the concepts and scenes of the book, the world building by Villeneuve and his team, let's say, that excites me the most. To make this world feel tangible. Hopefully it will work dramatically as well.

I don't put any stock in trailer music.

No way of knowing if it's going to be used in the film.

Totally agree(and Zimmer can certainly do ' world'!)

Supposedly, it all has been Hans (the "that reason" being Pink Floyd being the ones who were gonna score Jodorowsky's Dune):

It is in fact Hans' arrangement of the song, exactly for that reason.

But it also confirms Teaser 1 music was Hans, and that is the most important... lol

That's unsurprising.

As long as Zimmer manages to make two notes sound coherent and vaguely in the ballpark of what could qualify as "music", you will like it.

I find it hilarious that it finally reached the point where stock trailer music and Hans Zimmer sitting in anguish at his space rack playing tortured artist, have become indistinguishable.

I didn’t say I liked it, I said it sounded fine. This is trailer music, we will never hear it again. Who cares?

Hans Zimmer should stick to cashgrab superhero films instead of "big" movies like this. Hiring him is the only big mistake Denis Villeneuve seems to have made thus far.

I thought.  if I posted one EVERY time someone hurls a gratuitous insult at Hans, this might discourage them.

To be fair, I think he is a lovely man. I just can't stand 95% of his music, and think he is waaay too overused in Hollywood right now.

Bruce, Zimmer hatred is so rampant on this forum, not even a thread specifically designed for Zimmer appreciation can survive without naysayers chiming in. It's a sad state of affairs, and I think it ultimately says more about those people than it does Zimmer - not necessarily because they are critical, which is fine, but because the posts are often formulated in such vile, tabloid manner. But that's how it is. Just learn to ignore and move on.

Personally, I'm looking forward to what is probably the most impressive Zimmer season in a long time, with four major projects that could all spawn something interesting - WONDER WOMAN 1984, TOP GUN: MAVERICK, the Bond Movie and, most importantly, this DUNE movie.

My take.

The disdain JW fans have for HZ has little to do with his music.

They just can't accept that he has 'usurped' JW as the most successful and famous composer in the world.

Pretty petty and childish, if you ask me.

Trailer garbage music is one thing, the score is usually different and that's what I ultimately care about.

Glad to see Trapanese speak out against the trailer music trend. It's saddening to see how people shat on The Rise of Skywalker's soundtrack album and score for not including the trailer music. There's a goldmine of music in these scores that unfortunately have been overlooked for 'EPIC' trailer music.

Why are you excluding Spongebob: Sponge on the Run from this list?

So your love of Zimmer's music is directly to related to the movie it's scoring?

I thought you considered score albums to be "COMPLETELY SEPARATE" experiences from the films!?

Oh, come on, based on years of experience with Zimmer, do you actually believe he worked hard on Sponge Fucking Bob?

His MO for these animated kids movies are already known, he writes a theme or two and lets his team do the rest. He needs to, in order to focus on movies that really matter to him, i.e. Dune (and MAYBE Wonder Woman).
