Concerts are getting worse

I'm currently sat at a Pixar concert in Birmingham and am absolutely shocked and quite frankly pissed off.

It began with 3 blaringly loud trailers on a big screen, yes TRAILERS of 3 disney movies. Aladin, lion king and toy story 4. Am I at the cinema or a damn concert! 3 horribly loud trailers for 10 minutes before the concert even started.

And if that wasn't bad. The concert itself has confused me to no end. The whole sound is coming from just the left side of the stage. And each instrument is so loud and clear, it's like listening through a stereo speaker. I may as well just be sat at home listening to it on CD with one speaker turned off. It sounds like they are miming their instruments...

I can't explain it. It's just weird. Nothing sounds right at all. The audio and stage mixing is utterly dreadful. I have a massive headache right now from the blindingly earpiercing brass. It feels like there is a 20ft speaker against my ear.

I go to about 10 concerts a year and have been to about a hundred and concerts seem to be getting worse in all manner of ways.

And I didn't even mention that human beings in general are getting worse every day. People's overall manners are disgusting. I was surrounded by people talking (shouting) their words and having full conversations. Everyone in the world seems to be ill constantly with a deadly flu, and I'm squashed in my seat because 75% of them are obese and spilling over onto my seat.

Concerts have always been my biggest and most enjoyable hobby. But over the last year they've become miserable with the way people behave.

Yep. It's called hyperbole.

Concerts are for reverse nerds. Better sstay put.

I don't know if you can find consolation in this, but let me remind you that in the times of Mozart through Stravinsky people walked in and out, clapped, booed, even shouted... and had worse hygiene.

So you're saying humans have always been disgusting creatures. I cannot agree more.

I blame millennials.

I find it spread evenly across all generations. Old people are the best, but middle aged people are just as rude as millenials.

Really I blame reality shows. They make people feel entitled to be loud and obnoxious thus validating themselves. Part of having a good time to me is allowing others to do so as well.

Wouldn't necessarily say that concerts are getting worse, but more that you just weren't lucky this time.

I seem to be unlucky at every single concert I go to now. That is a pattern, not a one off.

Are you referring just to film music concerts, or also classical concerts?

Have found other audience members at orchestral concerts mostly OK. I agree there are several types of twat at rock/pop gigs, including -

The chatters. Sing along, clap, cheer, dance by all means ... but this is NOT the place to attempt conversation.

The ones seemingly intent on seeing the gig through their phone's video-recording facility. Take pics, sure ... but you're not Steven bloody Spielberg, pal. Get it out of my eyeline!

The ones blind-drunk before the band have even taken the stage. I'll be as far away from you as possible buddy, because I'm not taking the chance of having beer spilled on me, you puking on me or you starting a fight over fuck-all.

The ones who give absolutely no indication that they actually LIKE the band that they've paid between 50 - 80 (on average) quid to see ... no smile on their faces, toes resolutely untapped, arms not waved or used for clapping because they refuse to unfold them. OMG WHY ARE YOU HERE, YOU ABSOLUTE COCK?!?

That said, none of them have yet succeeded in putting me off from going.

When I saw Fellowship of the Ring, I was pleased to see the audience was enthusiastic for the 'meme lines', but the chatter and laughter surrounding those moments was a little too distracting - but they're the people who fill the seats and get the concerts circulating so I can't complain too much. I think in my mind I wanted the concerts to have the more formal etiquette of a classical concert audience, where we can hear the players and the music and we just listen and take it in damn it!

How about the David Gilmour concert I attended two years ago? A woman talking loudly on the phone for the entire first half (more loudly when the music got louder). Then a drunk guy behind me who made a kerfuffle behind me in the second half, began singing along loudly (!) with the introduction to Shine on You Crazy Diamond (and if you know the song, you know it's no for singing along, and certainly not loudly) and nearly started a fight when people complained. Tickets were €100 by the way, a bit much for just phoning a friend or getting pissed.

A few weeks ago, I was sitting next to a middle-aged guy at a Prokofiev concert at the Musikverein, who briefly started singing along with the music twice...

I went to a JW concert a few weeks ago and everyone was very respectful. Sure, everyone sang along with the five note theme of CE3K, but that was only because that's what the conductor instructed.

What an insensitive conductor!

I bet that David Gilmour fella couldn't shut up either!

You may find me like this at times during concerts because I’m often trying to shut out the overly loud and obnoxious people and focus on the band. Also, having your elbows at the ready is good for defending against mosh pits.

Did you just quoted me again?

Don't you understand the basic mechanics of how conversations are continued on online forums? You quote people to indicate to whom you are responding. It's a way of promoting clear communication. It's actually a form of respect. Stop being dumb.

Some examples that baffle me completely are once when I was at an 80th Birthday celebration concert for Williams in London a few years back, (he wasn't there of course), two women around 50 years old were talking for the entire first half about their shopping trip around London. They were rustling their bags and showing each other their purchases whilst shouting about mindless crap such as "ooo isn't that lovely." "I know, it was a bargain as well." Etc etc. People around, including my mother, were literally telling them directly to shut up, but they just spoke to each other about how rude it was that they were being told to be quiet... And even more random is that they disappeared at the interval and never showed up for the second half. It's like they needed somewhere to bloody sit down for an hour to rest their feet after such a fruitful shopping spree. Insanity.

Another one was at a Casino Royale Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, where a middle-aged couple were sat to my left, and the man just loved telling his wife everything that was happening in the film along with it, to show her how much he knew, and as if she wasn't watching the bloody film with him. She looked suicidal as he would tell her "that's the old original model of the Aston." or "oooo Bond has his gun ready look." I expected his wife to be a blind and deaf mute with the way he was describing everything he saw to her, but at the end she just walked out fine speaking to him about it. Yet again I was baffled.
