We've had plenty of "what are/which is your favorite movie" polls, but I don't think I've ever come across a favorite director poll, so here goes!

The poll has a max limit of 25 choices, so if your pick isn't on there, please share it below.

Three of my four favorite directors are absent!

Capra

Ford

Hughes

Spielberg

Not necessarily in that order.

He only produced that one.

I would have voted for Orson Welles anyway, but some other directors not on the list that I would have considered before not voting for them are: Paul Thomas Anderson, John Cassavetes, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Sidney Lumet, David Lynch, Kenji Mizoguchi, F.W. Murnau, Yasujirō Ozu, Michael Powell, Nicholas Ray, Jean Renoir, Alain Resnais, Roberto Rossellini, and Luchino Visconti.

Edit: And both Manns.

Spielberg is -- unsurprisingly and unoriginally -- my favourite director, like many others here.

But several others that I consider my alltime favourites, including Ridley Scott, Tim Burton, Satyjajit Ray, Michelangelo Antonioni, David Lynch, Andrei Tarkovsky, David Fincher (pre-ZODIAC), James Cameron, Krzysztof Kieślowski....

No love for Hitchcock?

1) Spielberg

2) Scorsese

3) Cronenberg

would probably be my top 3. I haven’t seen everything by all of them but I like everything I’ve seen by them.

I can appreciate him and what he did; his position in film history. But he's never really been a personal favourite, no, except maybe when I was a kid.

Maybe this thread would have worked better if it wasn't a poll with prefab choices?

There is an “other” option if your preferred director is not listed on the poll.

Time to grow up then.

You don’t like Hitchcock?

I know but I wrote because for a moment it was becoming more a thread about why you didn't include this or that director in the poll.

I love movies by every director listed, but in terms of influence on my thinking and having the most personal connection to their work, it's kind of a toss-up between the Coen Brothers and Wes Anderson.

And there's only one vote for others, so clearly you chose the options well.

How do they influence your thinking? Just curious.

Well, I guess it's a snake eating its tale.  I discovered their films at a very formative age (13-15 for both) and I don't know if they influenced my personality or if my personality pre-disposed me to like them.  Both have very distinct styles but they share a lot in common too.  Both often juxtapose sardonic/ironic humor with emotion/sentimentality.  I also think both emphasize the cruelty/coldness of random chance in our lives, giving their work kind of a sadness under the humor, and they both seem to come to the conclusion that the only solace is personal relationships, not society/power structures.  Both make very humanist works, but the Coens are like cynical humanists and Anderson is an optimistic humanist.  I'm just babbling at this point.

Definitely not Wes Anderson, David Fincher, or the Coen brothers.

John its a shame you left out Capra for some really scrub choices.

I love EARLY Hitchcock. Same with SS, sadly he is a shell of his former self.

I do love Capra.  I watched You Can't Take It With You (not for the first time) a month or two ago and it's still a complete delight.

I still voted SS

The reason?

Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-terrestrial and his Adventure on Earth, Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom and several more, along with his John Williams association.

  • 1 year later...

I never ranked my earlier mentions, and it would be interesting to hear more picks here.

So here goes. Top 10.

1. STEVEN SPIELBERG

2. Ridley Scott

3. Michelangelo Antonioni

4. Tim Burton

5. James Cameron

6. Satyjajit Ray

7. David Lynch

8. David Fincher (pre-ZODIAC)

9. Krzysztof Kieślowski

10. Christopher Nolan

...or something. Not a single female director on there, so I might do a top list for them as well:

1. KATHRYN BIGELOW

2. Andrea Arnold

3. Agnes Varda

4. Lynne Ramsay

5. Jane Campion

6. Sofia Coppola

7. Susanne Bier

8. Claire Denis

9. Leni Riefenstahl

10. Amy Heckerling

Again, just off the top of my head. With a few exceptions (those at the very top), the list might look differently tomorrow.

  1. Martin Scorsese
  2. David Lynch
  3. David Cronenberg
  4. Sergio Leone
  5. Quentin Tarantino
  6. Denis Villeneuve
  7. Steven Spielberg
  8. Roman Polanski
  9. Michael Haneke
  10. Christopher Nolan

I definitely need to get to know the filmography of non-english directors better.

I don't actually have a favourite director. Got a couple I really love and admire, from Sir David Lean and Sir Ridley Scott to James Cameron, Sir Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg, but I can't really rank them.

Some of my favorites (not in order):

Denis Villeneuve

Bong Joon Ho

Wes Anderson

Quentin Tarantino

Park Chan Wook

Cohen brothers

Lee Chang Dong

Alfonso Cuaron

Alejandro Gonzales Innaritu

Paul Thomas Anderson

Also writing this made me realize there are no women directors on my list. Unfortunately female directors have been severely underrepresented. They've always been out there making movies but the awards industry is so biased against male directors that it's much harder for them to make names for themselves.

I've watched a few movies by Greta Gerwig and I loved them. I wouldn't put them among my top films though. Similarly with Sofia Coppola.
