Concert Suites on the OSTs

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Is there a list somewhere on which tracks on the various OST CD releases are concert suites rather than in-movie tracks?

Most are fairly self-explanatory, but sometimes it's really quite fuzzy.

Any and all helps would be welcome. :)

Score tracks named as if they were concert pieces!

Concert pieces plopped into the middle and named almost as if they were score cues!

Score cues or parts of them, with OST-only concert extensions!

Full concert pieces partly edited into score cues and the rest remains unreleased!

Fuzzy indeed.

Sounds like a fun project!

OSTs that combine a film cue with a concert arrangement in the same track

  1. Return of the Jedi - "Han Solo Returns (At The Court Of Jabba The Hutt)" actually contains a portion of "Jabba The Hutt"  from 2:47-end
  2. A.I. Artificial Intelligence - "The Search For The Blue Fairy" actually contains a portion of "A.I Theme (Vocal Version) " from 2:28-end
  3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
    1. "Prologue" is really Children's Suite track Hedwig's Flight
    2. "Diagon Alley and The Gringotts Vault" is really a portion of Children's Suite track Diagon Alley2M4 Diagon Alley
    3. "Hogwarts Forever! and The Moving Stairs" is really 4M5 The Moving Stairs & Children's Suite track Hogwarts Forever
    4. "Fluffy's Harp" is really Chilren's Suite track Fluffy And His Harp

Concert arrangements that combine film cues with short segments recorded just for the album to create a de facto concert arrangement

  1. Jurassic Park - "Theme From Jurassic Park" is really 3M2 Record Intro & 3M2 The Dinosaurs & 3M2 Wompi Ending.
  2. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - "A Window To The Past" is really a unique recorder solo & portions of 7m124m3/4 & 7m2 Insert

OSTs that title a track that makes it sound like a concert arrangement, but it's really just film cues

  1. Superman - "Theme from Superman"  is really 1M1 & End Title
  2. Raiders of the Lost Ark - "Marion's Theme" is really just 10M4 En Bateau4M2 To Cairo.
  3. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - "Short Round's Theme" is really just 3M3/4M1 The Elephant Ride
  4. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - "Irina's Theme" is really just portions of 1m4NR Irina Spalko & 3m28 Russians Reappear & 7m56 End Credit

Is there anything confusing anywhere else?

Yeah I actually think we shouldn't consider assembled suites as a true concert suite.

An example is a Window to the Past - it is not really a cut by itself but instead is cobbled together from various places. It can be heard and enjoyed and performed as one but isn't really one.

I think Pieter just meant tracks like "Leia's Theme" on the Star Wars OST, which is clearly not part of the original soundtrack on the film but a wonderful concert arrangement hinted at, in this case but not always, by the word "theme".

Maybe somebody compiled a list of all these tracks that sometimes can be found ONLY on the OST and not necessarily on later expansions. Correct me if I'm wrong but the exciting "Over the Moon" concert version featuring the piano from the E.T. OST is nowhere to be found on later expansions (at least the two I have before I gave up ;).

That's indeed what I was getting at...

Isn't there a version with piano on the 2002 release, titled End Credits?

End Credits is not a "version" of Over The Moon.  End Credits is, well, the End Credits of the film.  "Over The Moon" is a concert arrangement.

Of course, but I can't remember if they used the actual end credits track on that release for the track End Credits.

The 1996 and 2002 releases were exclusively sourced from the main film score recordings.  No recordings from the album session were used anywhere on either release.  The master recordings from the album session burned up in the universal fire, so even on the 2017 LLL CD those tracks are sourced from a 1982 OST album master found in London and are not a rebuild from the original master elements like everything else on the set.
