You see, Williams drew a lot, of course, on the music of RVW here in War Horse. I read some place that Asian audiences fancy RVWs music because of perceived connections to Asian musical stylings. The emphasis on writing structure sometimes having incidental, say, Asian connotations because of, as you put it Steve (I'm not all that well with musical lingo, but I know what you mean even if I don't know what you mean), the strong pentatonic aspect to it. I've found this to be the case with a lot of classical music at times, and I understand that the line between the apparently not-so-distinct cultural music flavours of China and Dartmoor can get blurry. But that's not the point, I assume. Is it among the best JW scores of all time? Probably not. I can think of at least 30 other JW scores that I personally consider to be superior. Better what we are getting from the others, brilliant writing, very much heart and soul. And the maturing factor of music by JW, it feels now even better than back then. The score as a whole, I dunno...as others have said maybe not by every imaginable standard? But I think it's magical and it was exactly what I wanted in 2011 after three years of waiting for a new Williams release. Along with Tintin it was an ideal fix and the first scores I anticipated on this forum so I always think about it like that. I think it's proved definitive of this decade in JW, its resolute yearning and leaner action style felt refreshing at the time and still lingers. It also has my favorite John Williams melody ("Remembering Emilie") and action cue ("No Man's Land") of the 2010s and there have been some good ones. 7.5 years later it remains a notable score in my mind, so I vote yes. There's big sweeping strings followed by a mournful French horn. As we saw a transition from the cold battlefield to a warm sunset, it looked and sounded as though it would be another great Spielberg flick. Shame.
