Nobody said the puppet characters were gay.

That's not correct. The writer behind Bert and Ernie said he could only see them as a gay couple.

He’s talking from personal experience.  That’s all he could see them as, yes.  So in the situations where he wrote those characters, he was picturing his life with his partner.  To say “Bert and Ernie are gay” is a really sensationalist reduction of that message.  He was not the creator of Bert and Ernie (he started with Sesame Street in the mid 80s), nor certainly was he the only writer who handled those characters.

The interview is an insight into his writing process.  The full interview is linked through the link I included above.

Oscar and Slimey are totally gay through.

This show had one good episode (Going Going Gonzo).

Otherwise, it was even worse than Muppets Tonight.

Yeah, both were bad, but the newer one was terrible. My siblings and I loved The Jim Henson Hour, though.

I always had the clear impression that Bert and Ernie were kids, and vaguely assumed they were brothers.

Is that necessary? They are Muppets.

No. Who said it was necessary?

Puppets don't even have dicks.

How do they procreate?

We have Trump supporters here. We must respect them and not bother them with our beliefs.

Because they're "snowflakes"?

The writer in question came onto the show at around season 15 and wrote a few skits. Why is his view on the characters being gay being taken seriously? Why is Miss Piggy beating the shit out of Kermit okay, but have a possible gay couple on Sesame Street and suddenly want to pretend they care about what's appropriate for children to see?

None of the Sesame Street Muppets are in romantic relationships, they're all friends in different situations and walks of life dealing with educational situations.  This is an educational show for 3-5 year olds.

Thank you!

And yet, people have suspected they were a gay couple for a long time. Seven years ago, 11,000 people signed a petition that proposed Bert and Ernie should marry on Sesame Street. Of course, 'Sesame Street Workshop' panicked and shut down the petition. This proves that the writer's stance wasn't lost on the audience!
