Movies you should see but probably haven’t

rough cut

Recommended Posts

I don’t like that movie, it could’ve been awesome but it’s not. I wouldn’t even call it good.

There’s a fan cut out there, “Giftbearer”, that improves it though.

But still. Ugh.

Well, at least you recognize in your review that the movie is poorly reviewed by the majority. ; )

Before I go on, first let me say, I respect your opinion, a lot of times you and I think a lot a like, and I am genuinely interested in picking your brain a bit...

So why’d you think it was good though? I mean, I read your review but I still don’t get it?

Whatever is good about it, is surely overshadowed by the bad. Because what was bad, was really, really bad.

It had so many confusing and contradicting plot elements that I found unforgivable. The finger in the glass, the space snake that was obviously dangerous, the guy turning into a zombie, Noomi jumping and climbing after space surgery...

The above was not really my review. Just a tiny tidbit for a list. Here is my "proper" review (in Norwegian, though).

Thanks!

Edit: But I still don’t agree with your conclusion: that the combination of horror, beautiful and existential thoughts make it the “complete science fiction experience”...

For me the sum of the parts doesn’t hold up as a whole.

These movies are also good, if you haven't seen them.

To put Angel-A in this thread is cheating a bit - I'd think that most movie buffs should have seen it already (wonderful soundtrack as well by Anja Garbarek) - but I guess it's old enough now to have slipped under the radar for some. I guess The Host falls into the same category, I guess.

Angel-A (2005) IMDB

The Host (2006) IMDB

ANGEL-A is great. Not on LUCY level, obviously, but still classic Luc Besson 'cinema du look'. Which reminds me, I need to see ANNA.

THE HOST is a cult classic, and will no doubt get more views and exposure now after Bong's Oscar wins with PARASITE.

Familiar with DIE WELLE, but never seen it.

ERREMENTARI, I tried to watch on Netflix, but had to turn off. Felt very cheesy.

@Thor You'd put Lucy above Angel-A? I thought that Lucy was ok, and that's being generous... ;)

I haven't seen Anna, I need to check it out as well. I kinda feel that when rumours first began about a Black Widow-solo movie, studios at least made some effort to put a similar product on the market before the real thing hit. Red Sparrow (which I didn't like) being one, and I guess Anna the second.

You need to see Die Welle, it's a fantastic movie, quite horrific.

Errementari - You turned it off? Ouch! Yeah, it's cheesy, but it does have it's strenghts. Also, I think that to enjoy it, perhaps, it helps to know that the movie is based on really old folklore, grounded in old folk tales from the Basque region in Spain

@Alexcremers Haha, I know what you mean - the puzzlement! I hate everything that The Cohen Brothers ever did, and that seems to go against popular opinion. Go figure.

Not only do I put LUCY above ANGEL-A, I think it's the best film of that whole year. In fact, I was moved to tears when I first saw it. Not because of the story or anything, but because it was so moving to see one of my old director favourites back in such spectacular form. A masterpiece.

I've watched the 80s American version of Die Well (The Wave) on the final years of the Elementary School and then the German version my first year of High School. All of these in class. I remember liking the american one more.

I guess movies about authoritharian regimes fascinated me when I was young. I've watched the minisseries Hitler: The Rise of Evil (with Robert Carlyle as Hitler) when I was eleven, and I've got terrified.

Alas, no. Powell/Pressburger movies are one of my gaping holes. Don't think I've seen a single one.

Oh, my giddy aunt! Thor, you really must watch BLACK NARCISSUS, THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP, GONE TO EARTH, A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH, and THE RED SHOES.

The two ballet movies (Red Shoes, Tales of Hoffman) are a slog to get through for me, but they sure are *art* with a capital A. All the others are wonderful, and very inventive. Love 'Black Narcissus,' next to 'The Innocents' it's a testament to that great actress Deborah Kerr's talent and a film someone like Spielberg and others of his generation must have watched mouth wide open. I forgot which one had David Niven as pilot in the heavenly court but that was also a very clever picture.

So here's another bunch of movies that I enjoy. I can't really say they are all "under the radar" releases, but at least they weren't big blockbusters. Worth checking out at least.

Attack The Block (2011) IMDB

Not seen ARCHIVE, but seen the others. All great picks. I consider EX MACHINA the greatest film of the 2010s! STRANGE DAYS is iconic, and ATTACK THE BLOCK is a great cult film (and cool Steven Price score). AS ABOVE, SO BELOW is a claustrophobic little film that nods to THE DESCENT and THE CAVE.

Glad you agree! Hopefully you’ll like Archive (but don’t expect a masterpiece - just an entertaining movie).

49th PARALLEL is a masterpiece.

And, Vaughan Williams did the score; his first at age 69😍!

Oh, I do love that score, despite never having seen the film. In fact, it might my favourite of 1941.

Yeah, I haven't seen some Scorsese classics either, like The Age of Innocence, Silence, Gangs of New York and The Last Temptation of Christ. All of these, TAoI is the one I'm most curious about, but not because of Scorsese, but rather due to the great Elmer Bernstein score.

Wow! That's even worse than Thor not having seen The Red Shoes and A Matter of Life and Death.

Edit: Or perhaps I should have said "better", since it means you still have it to look forward to...

It might surprise folks to know, but...RAGING BULL has completely passed me by. I really should get around to watching it.

I've seen every Scorsese except for Silence but somehow I'm not in a hurry to rectify that. Raging Bull is seen by many as Scorsese's finest.

Wasn't it Scorsese asking the Academy "Please give me the Oscar"?

He certainly has deserved a few.
