crocodile 7,998
Well I've got it anyway. I tend to buy Williams the day they come out. Not taking chances. Anyway... MR works so much better in expanded form. I like the themes and stylistic seem to recur more throughout the score which makes for a more appealing listening experience. Sure, there are so cues that don't make great listening on any album, due to their suspenseful low-key nature, but the score feels more cohesive somehow. The sound is greatly improved too. It is not a Bruce Botnick recording but definitely has more clarity and warmth which was muddy and flat on the OST. It's a definite improvement. Now... when is the film going to come out on 4K Blu-ray? Karol jamesluckard and Chewy

Popular Post Disco Stu 15,495
Reading through the liner notes, it truly is amazing seeing it laid out how much Williams did in 2002, at the age of 70. 1. Attack of the Clones 2. Winter Olympics theme + conducting at the opening ceremony in Utah 3. Minority Report 4. Musical director at the Academy Awards 5. Premiered the first of its kind LTP performance of ET 6. Chamber of Secrets 7. Catch Me If You Can Plus his usual schedule of conducting engagements. 12 separate performances with the Boston Symphony alone that year, according to their archives, including the premiere of Heartwood with Yo-Yo Ma at Tanglewood. I think we can officially call 2002 "Peak Williams." Not necessarily in compositional quality (although that can certainly be argued) but definitely in terms of cultural importance! (I remember watching that ceremony live just to see Williams conduct - and then was thrilled when the 1980 Hockey Team lit the torch.) Also remember that he orchestrated Escapades into a very successful, and lasting concert work that year too. Truly incredible.

Popular Post Disco Stu 15,495
Just finished my first listen through the expanded release. Minority Report is a dark, brooding masterpiece. It's such a pleasure to just immerse yourself in the melancholy. I agree with everyone who says that the C&C presentation is superior to the OST in every possible way, the overall musical structure just feels so much more natural and satisfying like this. Some random thoughts I noted as I listened: - "Presenting the Precogs" is one of those suspense cues that would be a bit dull from most composers, but Williams always knows how to add orchestration touches and musical changes that make the cue a low-key Herrmannesque delight - "Containment Center" I love this little cue. With that low male synth choir, it's about as dark in tone as this score gets - The Anne Lively vocals I know some find annoying, but I always find it to be incredibly effective. A wrenching cry of pain from the depths of Agatha's soul, a cry of grief for her mother breaking through the fog of drugs that keep her subdued in the precog tank - I *love* all the subtle touches of synth found throughout this score. Like in the first half of "On the Run" there's not only the synth choir, but the barely perceptible metronomic synth percussion in the left channel that adds just a little extra something to the rhythmic figure provided by the marimba (or xylophone, whichever it is) in the right channel. The score is just overflowing with those fascinating small choices - "Anderton Escapes" and "The Conveyor Belt" is for sure my favorite action music Williams wrote in 2002. They stand alongside The Lost World as some of the most "jump out of your seat it's so exuberant" action music of his post-Jurassic Park action sound. - It's wonderful to have "The Swimming Pool" complete and in its proper place, providing this shot of heartbreaking emotion amidst the suspense, suspicion, and action of this section of the score - The "Freezing Water" alternate is interesting. I think I prefer the opening percussion of the final version, but it was interesting to hear the solo harp section without the percussion underneath. I also noticed that the percussion is mixed much quieter than on the OST track. - I've always loved the darkly comic tone of "Saving the Eye" - No particular thoughts on the climax, it's all good stuff. - Great to finally have an official release of the film version of "A New Beginning." That plus "Sean's Theme" and the end credits (still a fantastic suite), is a perfect ending to this score. The end credits version of A New Beginning is still just one of my favorite things Williams has ever written (although I prefer the 2016 revision!) It feels weird to be made so happy by listening to such an emotionally bleak score! Of course it ends on such a wonderfully hopeful note. Popular Post Jay 37,336
Fantastic observations and opinions, Stu! Well said all around. One thing I have to point out: 46 minutes ago, Disco Stu said: - The "Freezing Water" alternate is interesting. I think I prefer the opening percussion of the final version, but it was interesting to hear the solo harp section without the percussion underneath. I also noticed that the percussion is mixed much quieter than on the OST track. The percussion that opens the version in the alternates section is the version used in the film. The percussion that opens the main program version, which was also the percussion used on the OST and session leak, was replaced in the final film with the opening you hear in the alternates section. I'm not sure which version I like more, but the main program/OST/leak version always reminds of Zam the Assassin and the Chase Through Coruscant! MrJosh 892
I love the subtle details in this score, and the re-mastered sound helps them to be fully appreciated. There are a lot of details to pick out in the dark and low texture of the two Pre-Crime to the Rescue cues. Images Of Sean is beautiful, I love the oboe solo. The unused Collage cue is really interesting. I don't have my OST around, but are the female vocals mixed in quieter on this release? I felt like the vocals blended more with the orchestra, rather than sitting on top.
Jay 37,336
Both versions of the Collage cue are fascinating to me because as independent pieces they are extremely interesting to listen to, but in terms of their role in the narrative I have no idea what they were supposed to be used for. Someone needs to try syncing each to the film during the Schubert sequence so we can try to figure out how they would have worked MrJosh
