Another mediocre choice on the side of the producers, that casting.

Morlock- who thought this could be one of the best Bond's ever, when it had (at different times) Tarantino, Brosnan and Watts, and now thinks it will nary be better than DAD, with Craig and Arnold the sole redeeming features in a badly produced and badly scripted Bond outing.

I don't, it may be Shakespeare. But I seriousley doubt the writing will be any better than DAD, especialy since it is scripted by the same writing team of DAD. A problem with the Bond films has always been the old blood involved. The same people hanging on for far longer than they should have. Why on earth should a Bond film have the same writer each time? After 20 films, you'd think they'd learn to experiment a bit!

Now THAT sounds more interesting. Though still, not enough.

Morlock- crossing his fingers for Steven Zailian, Aaron Sorkin, David Mamet and Quentin Tarantino to jump in for another re-write, at least that way we'll get some good dialogue.

They start shooting in 20 days. ;)

And they have two cast members.

At any rate, the movie will be a hard sell if that spoiler is true. I think the audience would be willing to accept a more serious story, but not that serious.

That's how the book ended, and they're keeping the major plot the same (albeit set in modern times).

This could be the best-made spy thriller in a years, but if the audience goes in expecting stuff to blow up every 20 minutes and they don't get it, bad word-of-mouth could kill this film.

Let's face it, the Bond series is in the end still a formula series. After the disaster that was DAD, change is very welcome, and I'd like to see another Bond movie like FRWL, but I'm just not sure the present day audience would expect and/or accept that from a Bond movie.

Yeah, of course there's also bad press that comes with it. OHMSS is often said to be a flop, but it was #1 box office film of the year in Brittain and many other countries IIRC. It's only remembered as a flop because it made less than the last movie (and a lot of people see the single appearance of Lazenby as a sign that he must have stunk up the part).

But often when I read about it in articles where it is quickly mentioned, it is mentioned as a disappointing film, or as you said, a flop. Unfortunately, the word "financial" is often left out (which would still be exaggerated, since it made considerable profit).

But Bond is always a hot item, so small remarks are often quickly brown way out of proportion, and every magazine and newspaper wants to be the first to report on new things Bond it seems. So things are often thrown out there in a somewhat clumsy fashion.

I'm just saying, I don't know if this film will appeal to the general public. Even if it is, in fact, a well-crafted suspenseful thriller. And you mentioned Licence to Kill. I agree with you on that one. It's a very good film, but what's often remembered is that it took nine years before we got a new Bond film. There may be all kinds of real reasons why that didn't happen (I believe Cubby Broccoli passed away between LtK and GoldenEye, among other things), but what the average movie-goer will remember is that nine year gap and the change of actor.

Everybody knows the James Bond movies, but not everybody really knows them, if that makes any sense.

- Marc, who's not very good at putting this into words.

That makes sense. (Except it was six years, and Cubby died after GoldenEye, but he was too ill to work full-time on it.)

Without sounding snobbish, I hope this new film will appeal to people who, as you put it, really understand James Bond.

The general feeling among critics about OHMSS was the film could be the best Bond film ever, but Lazenby ruined it.

Oh, yeah, I had a feeling I got some things mixed up. I too hope they aim for the real Bond fans with this one.

And OHMSS is excellent, but Lazenby is a hurdle you have to take. By the end, I accept him as Bond, but I have some trouble with other scenes. And I've never liked that kilt.

Infinitely better than this, though.

I would not even consider going to see the film if she got her way.

I did not know about this.........considering that the entire UK population apart from one thinks that she is a dumb tart whom we all wish would remove herself from the gene pool in some spectacular style......and the one who think she isn't ain't English anyway......I SERIOUSLY hope she does not get her claws into this movie.....

I heard she was just going to be Le Chiffre's eye candy on one arm. I'd be cool with Rachael Stirling.

I'm not worried with the casting so much as I am with Arnold. If he makes a score as close to the 60s as possible with little to no techno...that'd be fine. Just bring back the brass and the jazz.

I don't see what's wrong with Jordan as Bond-girl, I think she is (or maybe was) quite pretty so I like the idea actually.

She could never play Vesper - that part really requires acting talent. (Spoilers) She tricks Bond - she's a double agent and Bond doesn't figure it out! That's no easy task....

MEGA UPDATE: there are four potential Bond girls screentesting this week. The first is Rachael Stirling, the abovementioned daughter of former Bond-wife Diana Rigg (Tracy in On Her Majesty's Secret Service). The other three haven't been named, but rumours include Natasha Henstridge, Kimberley Davies (who played Bond girl Alura McCall in the 007 game NightFire). At one point Angelina Jolie was reported to be a candidate, but this has (fortunately) been ruled out. Other rumours include Charlize Theron and Sienna Miller.

IGN published a list of the characters appearing in Casino Royale. According to "reliable sources" the character of Vesper will be in her late-20s/early-30s and will be gorgeous. The role is described as "the most dramatic Bond girl yet". This suggests that in this respect the film will stick closely the the novel. The villain has not been named (in the book he was called Le Chiffre). Director Martin Campbell wants European actors, and reports say that French actors Romain Duris and Michaël Youn screentested recently. The villain will also be in his late-20s/early-30s. This would be a big departure from Fleming's villain who was old, 18-stone, and a redhead. The producers are looking for a high profile actress or pop singer in the role of the villain's love interest. Felix Leiter may be returning, as the script calls for an American CIA agent between 30 and 40 years old. Felix was written out of the series in 1989's Licence to Kill, but if this Bond film truly is a "restart", that should be irrelevant. There is a character called Solari - who is "a commander in the Sudanese rebel army and is 40 to 50 years old." Pop singer Seal was recently rumoured to be up for this part. Other characters include Demetrius, who is "a reckless Mediterranean character in his forties. He is a sleazy sort who lives the high life as a gambler and money launderer." He may well take the place of Bond's opponent in the card game (in the place of Le Chiffre). Icelandic actor Björn Hlynur Haraldsson is rumoured to have tested for this role. Demetrius will also have a wife - Solonge, in her 30s. (You can bet she will be bed-hopping at some point.) The final "announced" character is Massus.

Massus "is also of Mediterranean heritage, said to be pushing sixty years old." (Spoilers)Although a world-weary undercover agent for the British government, Massus is not the double agent that 007 initially assumes he is. In Fleming's novel, this character was the French intelligence agent Mathis.

UPDATE #2 - another name has been put forward for the villain role - Simon Abkarian - personally I'm happy they're going with relatively unknown French actors (he might be famous in France???). He certainly looks the part more than the previous names mentioned.

Read the story (translated rather crudely from French - James Jump, anyone? ;)) here.

Well it's slightly complicated. It's sort of like a "second series" of Bond - they're restarting, but in the 21st century (2006). So, in a way, Dench has never played M before. (But I agree it would never work with a woman in the '50s.) The main reasons for the "restart" are a) they want to bring Bond "back to basics", it'll be a relatively gadget-free film; B) Bond needs to make mistakes, something that would be hard to believe after Brosnan's super-hero style. ;) (I'm not blaming Brosnan, I'm criticising the way those particular films were written.)

IT'S OFFICIAL (apparently):

Reliable French newspaper Le Parisien today confirms that Abkarian has signed up to play the role of the villain!

According to the paper, Romain Duris turned down the role and Simon Abkarian was chosen over Michael Youn for the part. As Le Parisien reports, it seems that Abkarian has signed up for the role of the main villain. Do producers indeed replace Le Chiffre with Demetrius? In the IGN report it was said that Demetrius is a  "reckless Mediterranean in his forties. Sleazy sort who lives the high life as a gambler and money launderer." Indeed, sounds a bit like Fleming's Le Chiffre...

Together with Abkarian, Italian actress Catrina Murino is said to have signed up for the role of Solonge, Demetrius' girlfriend. The 27 years old actress had an audition in Rome last week and was, according to the newspaper, "approved by Barbara Broccoli". Murino is said to need to travel to the Bahamas and Barrandov Studios in Prague.

Additionally, another French has scored a part in Casino Royale; a guy called Seydina Baldi. In France, he's known for his karate and fighting shows. Speculation is that he was signed up for the role of Solari; a role that pop star Seal originally was planned to play.

One more bit of news: 4 actresses are screentesting this week for the part of Vesper Lynd - read more here.

ROSE BYRNE IS VESPER LYND!!!!!

8O    :joy:    ;)

I can tell you that that's not absolutely confirmed yet - it's probably true, but that very same newspaper claimed that the new James Bond would be announced in June 2005...

And we're still getting new rumours coming in - the latest is Thandie Newton.

The Bond films should have stopped after OHMSS. The only good films since then were The Living Daylights and Goldeneye. The rest are decent but the overall story lines aren't interesting and frankly nobody played Bond like Connery.

I'm sorry I really disagree with you on that one.

There have been a handfull of lesser or bad Bond films, but even these have some redeeming feature that makes me glad they were made (Moonraker is a terrible film, but that score...)

Also, these films make money, which is the most important reason to continue making films.

I'll John Barry did a great job with the music regardless of the films and even Michael Kamen's score was good.

Also, these films make money, which is the most important reason to continue making films.

Sadly I'll agree with that.

Rose Byrne as Vesper??? Have they gone completely mad over there at Bondland???

Hopefully this new Thandie Newton rumor pans out. Not sure she would have been my first choice, but certainly better than Padme's handmaiden.

Your Aston Martin DBS comes standard with tire spikes, rear and front rocket launchers, machine guns behind the headlights, and something I'm particularly proud of...a flux capacitor. We tried to make you ready for any situation you might encounter. And do bring it back in one piece, OO7.
