Halloran 0 Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 From His web:"12.27.04From Sir Arthur regarding the recent tsunamis in South and Southeast Asia:Thank you for your concern about my safety in the wake of Sunday's devastating tidal wave.I am enormously relieved that my family and household have escaped the ravages of the sea that suddenly invaded most parts of coastal Sri Lanka, leaving a trail of destruction. But many others were not so fortunate. For hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans and an unknown number of foreign tourists, the day after Christmas turned out to be a living nightmare reminiscent of The Day After Tomorrow.Among those affected are my staff based at our diving station in Hikkaduwa and holiday bungalow in Kahawa - both beachfront properties located in areas worst hit. We still don't know the full extent of damage as both roads and phones have been damaged. Early reports indicate that we have lost most of our diving equipment and boats. Not all our staff members are accounted for - yet. This is indeed a disaster of unprecedented magnitude for Sri Lanka which lacks the resources and capacity to cope with the aftermath. We are all trying to contribute to the relief efforts. We shall keep you informed as we learn more about what happened.Curiously enough, in my first book on Sri Lanka, I had written about another tidal wave reaching the Galle harbour (see Chapter 8 in The Reefs of Taprobane, 1957). That happened in August 1883, following the eruption of Krakatoa in roughly the same part of the Indian Ocean.Arthur Clarke27 December 2004"

CYPHER 1 Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 Well I was wondering if Arthur C. clarke was alive period. I totally forgot that he lived in Sri Lanka. CYPHER - who has just finished reading his first Clarke novel, Childhood's End which contains a very eerie sequence in which an earthquake deep in the heart of the ocean floor triggers a series of events that results in a.... tsunami hitting an inhabited island. Coincidence or clairvoyance? You decide.
pixie_twinkle 60 Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 2010 was a horrible movie. I've never read the book, but damn what a terrible film! James - who intends to read the entire quadrilogy (?) at some point.
Lurker 5 Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 James - who intends to read the entire quadrilogy (?) at some point.I loved all of the books.Neil - who hates the "word" "Quadrilogy"
pixie_twinkle 60 Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 Well then he should write one more and make it a Quintrilogy!
Melange 448 Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 2010 was a horrible movie. I've never read the book, but damn what a terrible film! I used to love 2010 (movie) when growing up. But yes the book of 2010 is much better. The film decided to ditch so many characters and storylines in order to shorten the movie and condense it a more action orientated feel. But i do like the way 2010 portrayed space as very unforgiving and harsh. Even moreso than 2001. Helen Mirren tripping over her tongue in order to imitate a Russian accent was pretty naff. Overall, i still quite enjoy the film. It's a pity the original Dr Floyd wasn't still alive. Given the wide time frame between movies,it just wouldn't have worked anyway. I just found Schneider was so far removed from the original Floyd, it was incredible. Still good. But his personality was total opposite. As for the books, i finished 2061 and to this day have been very hesitant about reading 3001 because the story sounded silly."Will i dream?"
Justin 2 Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 Wouldn't that be a pentalogy?Or we could call it a series of five books. Justin
