nightscape94 968 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 I don't need to see any more Leno than necessary.And a little Bradshaw goes a long, long way.Tim
Chris ChrusherComix 67 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 I don't know how Melisande sat through this . . . I can barely watch this thing on TV, let alone sit there live listening to some nut and a pair of tits ham it up before the chin . . . bring on Williams already! That nut is hall-of-fame QB turned lunatic Terry Bradshaw. And that pair of tits was WWE wrestler/GoDaddy.com model Candice Michelle. And they're silicone. (Chrusher hates fake tits.)It was actually surprisingly funny for a change... I rarely watch any of those late-nite talk shows because they usually annoy me. But this one wasn't bad. And JW actually performing on piano! Nice!
rmannion 0 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 I attended the taping as well. What really surprised me is that everyone was quieter during the performance than your typical Hollywood Bowl Williams concert. At the Bowl, one can't go 5 minutes without someone loudly asking his/her neighbor what movie a piece is from or crinkling some plastic wrapper :/.
King Mark 3,975 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Overall,I still don't like how Leno downplayed John Williams. And now here's 15 grammy winner Yo Yo Ma,wow!,who's got 15 grammy awards?!(Williams has 16 I think).....and 5 time academy award John Williams(said in low voice). He should have introduced him properly, reminding everyone he was the composer of Jaws,Star Wars,Indiana Jones and Harry Potter.k.M.

Maybe you were in the group of Williams fans I talked to this afternoon?Yeah, the studio pages are pretty good about enforcing silence at tapings. I also think that the close proximity of the cameras shuts people up.Overall,I still don't like how Leno downplayed John Williams. And now here's 15 grammy winner Yo Yo Ma,wow!,who's got 15 grammy awards?!(Williams has 16 I think).....and 5 time academy award John Williams(said in low voice). Yeah, that miffed me a bit as well. I though he was going to talk about Williams' Grammys next, but nope, just a quick brush off.

I don't think he knew. JW is probably the least famous famous person. More people know his music than him.
fommes 165 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 If anybody has the audio of their performance, I'd really be thankful if you would be so kind to PM me? I'd really like to hear this.
Kendal_Ozzel 36 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 I'm really kicking myself for not recording it now. I want to hear it again!!!
filmscore5 0 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 I too attended the taping today and was sitting about 15 feet from the performers on the small balcony. I will say though that I enjoyed Terry Bradshaw, perhaps a bit more than others in this forum that went. He was damn funny, and if you're a big football fan like I am, then you'll understand my laugh out loud reactions to his football-caused brain cell damage. In regards to Williams, there was a moment that nobody has talked about yet on this post. Williams and Yo-Yo came damn close to tearing, as Williams missed a page turn and as a result, fell off with the harmony. It was pretty obvious, and Yo-Yo's face looked like he was about to shit, hoping that they got back on. Of course they did, but it was more funny than anything else, mostly because it sounded like Williams took 15 minutes to put that arrangement together. It was a half-assed piano accompaniment, but the cello writing was cool, and of course Yo-Yo played the shit out of it.
Incanus 5,890 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 What Williams is not infallibe and flawless!!??? This comes as a shock. I want ot see him muck up the performance. Did anyone actually tape it?.
Hitch 60 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Yo-Yo Ma (after his shit attack): "You have failed me for the last time, Williams!"
Jill Sandwich 11,165 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Here's your host... Johhhhhhhnnnnnn WILLIAAAAAMMMSSS!
Hitch 60 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Floor Manager fails to get response from the audience to APPLAUSE

You have the option of watching the televisions in the studio while they're taping, but I ignored them, as Johnny was only 15 feet away!As for the re-tape thing, Leno does what you call a "live taping." They tape just as if it was going to a live feed, they even insert the same commercials you see at night while they are taping so they can sattelite feed the show to the east coast as soon as they are done. The funny little blip in their playing was no surprise, it happens, especially when you flub a page turn like Williams did. I've done it a few times when accompanying soloists on piano. Missing that page turn sucks!
Jill Sandwich 11,165 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Floor Manager fails to get response from the audience to APPLAUSESo thousands of dollars of sheet music from studio archives was reported stolen.... oh, wait, that was James Horner!
King Mark 3,975 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 I can live with an analogue recording of the video, but it would be nice for someone to make a high bitrate(320)k) MP3 of the audio only from a digital sound broadcast.I have some signal noise in my recording.K.M.
Richard P 5,302 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 If I was at home right now, I'd easily do that (I'm currently at uni), but my brother will get it on Sky+ when it airs on CNBC and I'll be able to watch it in about 3 weeks. But I'm still hoping some kind soul here recorded or at least got it from bittorrent and can rip it
Salacius 7 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Man it's not until Thursday over here

It was a half-assed piano accompaniment, but the cello writing was cool, and of course Yo-Yo played the shit out of it.I think it was very detailed piano writing. I liked when the piano took the melody and the cello did counterpoint. A piano needs a good hall. They added reverb to the cello, but not enough to the piano.
Luke Skywalker 2,383 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 no links yet?And what a shame there was no interview

I've done it a few times when accompanying soloists on piano.  Missing that page turn sucks!I noticed the page turning flub, but I didn't catch Yo-Yo's expression, nor did I notice something amiss in the piece. Of course, maybe I was too mesmerized by being so close to the Maestro that perhaps he could've started playing Chopsticks and I wouldn't have noticed, haha I'm still looking for a torrent, to no avail. I recorded it on TiVo, but I really have no clue as to how I would go about transferring the program to my computer.
nightscape94 968 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Yo-Yo always has that look when he performs. I was fortunate enough to see him with the Philadelphia Orchestra when they played the Dvorak concerto, and he always looks at the conductor with that weird sour expression. He did it a few times during the Williams performance, and it's no different from what he generally does. Don't assume it was because of a mistake (one that I believe is non-existant).Tim
Hitch 60 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 UK and Ireland members: MSNBC Channel has the Jay Leno Tonight show at 10pm tonight GMT. Don't know if this has the John Williams piece.

nightscape94 968 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 I'm actually surprised we don't have one already :?Tim, who would have recorded it, but is not that technologically advanced.
Romão 2,473 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 C'mon guys, someone get a rip of this. It's pretty cruel to rest of us not being able to watch this thing.
nightscape94 968 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 REC button, you know The only think I could've recorded it on is VHS. I don't have a DVR hook up, or burner. SORRY! Tim

It's pretty cruel to rest of us not being able to watch this thing.I wholeheartedly second that I could get it off bittorrent if the stupid firewall here didn't block just about everything If it was me I'd have ripped it by now...
SeekUYoda 0 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 UGH - what a misallocation of time if ever I saw one! I was expecting Williams to be a guest-who-happened-to-also-play-music, as happens sometimes. Isn't he worth it?I didn't notice the so-called page-turn flub, but I was actually wondering why Williams didn't bring a page-turner with him. That sort of thing is pretty standard... Beautiful arrangement - I would loved to have heard better balance between the instruments, though. I heard a LOT of cello (which was beautiful), but he often masked the piano. However, I loved it anyway. I can't imagine having been close enough to see the looks on their faces as they played together! Collaborative piano is such an amazing thing, and to have been able to watch Williams as he played - priceless. Bravo to them!SeekUYoda, for the people who actually got to BE there!
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 It was all right, but I was disappointed they didn't talk at all to Williams. And of course, I rolled my eyes at all the things KM mentioned ("The Music of Yo-Yo Ma with John Williams," the Grammy comment, etc...). The piece seemed nice, but in all honesty I would've preferred to hear Williams at the piano by himself. Hearing him play is something we rarely get to experience, so it would've been nice to see that. But still, it's more mainstream recognition than he usually gets, so we don't have much to complain about. Ray Barnsbury
Melisande 0 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 Apparently you can download a copy of this show here: http://www.latebyte.nl/Unfortunately, they won't let you register unless you're in the Netherlands
Chris ChrusherComix 67 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 If you ask me, it wasn't a great performance. Perhaps the tear/page-turn screw up is responsible for this. The best part was just seeing our favorite old geezer perform the piano live in front of a larger audience outside of the usual concert/orchestral type fans.
Incanus 5,890 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 our favorite old geezer That could be our affectionate nick name for Williams from now on. Or perhaps Ye Olde Geezer.
David Vincent 8 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 Hi everyone !You can download the video (30 Mb file) here : http://musicby.jw-music.net/geisha.avi
David Vincent 8 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 I will probably record the performance thursday to see if I can have a better sound. This file is in mono...
Incanus 5,890 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 Thank you David! I have been waiting to see this.
nightscape94 968 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 It was actually pretty brave of Williams to write the arrangement in a way where the main theme that everyone would know doesn't even come in until almost a minute into the piece. But according to Leno, Ma is a sellist and Williams a 5 time Arsker winner.Tim
Incanus 5,890 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 I think the arrangement was a great one. It send shivers down my spine to hear Williams and Yo Yo Ma perform it. Of course Williams took the accompanying role on the piano but what I could hear from the clip it sounded good enough. That cello line was so good I wish it had been on the album. Little disappointing Williams and Ma were not interviewed.
Luke Skywalker 2,383 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 Thank you! We have a winner for the JWfan awards EDIT:The video is cool! Now im ready for some leitmotif, yeah!
Salacius 7 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 Thank you indeed,Just watched it,Man Yo -Yo ma's vibratos tear my heart! I saw the man in the UK once and he was awesome. What a great thing seeing Williams on the piano and the arrangement was excellent!Shame the piano wasn't a bit louder
Hitch 60 Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 See John Williams act as C-3PO as he spreads his arms to kiss the lovely lady whose name I don't know. Note also the large smile on Johnny's face.
