pacey988 0 Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Was anyone watching this morning's "Today" show? One of the themes that JW composed as part of the new "Mission" package played over the closing credits in full, although there was some voiceover as part of a montage of clips of the "Today" crew on set and on location. We discussed it here, it was the one with the trumpet solos. I'm trying to see if anyone taped it because I am also a fan of Maroon 5, the band that was on the show today. Just letting you all know.

BurgaFlippinMan 7 Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Maroon 5 aint to bad, but levine just cant seem to sing well live
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Maroon 5 aint to bad,
BLUMENKOHL 1,110 Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 They're not that bad....they have nothing on the great bands from 60s to late 80s...but they're competent.
King Mark 3,975 Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 so is this what we called the "Brokaw Theme"?I'd like to have it without Williams speaking over it
BurgaFlippinMan 7 Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 They're not that bad....they have nothing on the great bands from 60s to late 80s...but they're competent. My thoughts exactly.Burga - who is currently digging Belle and Sebastian
pacey988 0 Posted August 18, 2007 Author Posted August 18, 2007 Referring back to the thread from 2004 when the Brokaw special had the footage of Williams conducting the new "Mission" theme, this was the so-called "rodeo" theme that played early in the piece.
King Mark 3,975 Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 during the broadcast you saw,did it play in it's entirety and cleanly?
pacey988 0 Posted August 18, 2007 Author Posted August 18, 2007 It played in its entirety, but not cleanly, as scenes were shown with the Today show cast and the audio from those scenes was intercut with the music.during the broadcast you saw,did it play in it's entirety and cleanly?
Miguel Andrade 1,725 Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 Referring back to the thread from 2004 when the Brokaw special had the footage of Williams conducting the new "Mission" theme, this was the so-called "rodeo" theme that played early in the piece.Does anyone has that footage? I think i had it on my hard disc, but it isn't there anymore
pacey988 0 Posted August 19, 2007 Author Posted August 19, 2007 I have the audio of it only. Referring back to that thread, someone tried to make an edit to piece together one theme over JW's comments on the recording process. I checked back and I think it is actually two versions of the same theme, one faster and one slower. There is one thing I would like all of you to know too: I am a news theme collector in addition to collecting soundtracks. A person I used to talk to before Hurricane Katrina who collects news theme packages supposedly knows someone at NBC Universal who has this music, but the problem is every time I try to contact him, he won't contact me. I can't even contact him on the phone because I lost his number. My other friend who is trying to run a site devoted to network news themes (there is one site that is devoted to this, but he is trying to start a new site with message board) talks to him all the time, and somehow he's not going after this music. He told me he hates "The Mission". I don't even know if he expects me to go after him on my own. I can't, because he doesn't email me and I lost his phone number. I just don't know what to do.
Kendal_Ozzel 36 Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 Maroon 5 aint to bad, but levine just cant seem to sing well liveIndeed!
pacey988 0 Posted August 24, 2007 Author Posted August 24, 2007 I have the theme. It played again this morning, albeit with sound clips of the Today show crew in various places around the U.S. as part of their "America The Beautiful" series. If anyone would like to hear it, please PM me. I'm working on it right now.

pacey988 0 Posted August 24, 2007 Author Posted August 24, 2007 How do you upload a file and make it available to everyone? I use Yousendit and I don't know how to do this.

#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 I'm not sure it would be allowed for you to share the link on this forum.
King Mark 3,975 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Yes,it's already established were using PM's Steef. Thanks for beeing the acting internet police anyways
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 I should have been made Moderator, then I would have gotten some respect!
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 You would have banned discussions on any not Williams related topic.
King Mark 3,975 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 You would have banned discussions on any not Williams related topic.I would certainly enforce the 1 topic only rule for LotR and Giacchina
pacey988 0 Posted August 25, 2007 Author Posted August 25, 2007 I made an edited version of the theme so there is all music. PM me for the link.
King Mark 3,975 Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Woah,I nearly fell off my chair. It's an excellent piece.I love when the full strings are unleashed at 0.50 is pure Williams beauty of Leaving Home caliber. Those kind of harmonies kick ass of whatever dissonant concertos he writes.I sense it is not complete, maybe you can keep recording the today show for a while to get the missing bits?BTW it was me who edited the poor sounding shorter version from the NBC video a few 2 years agoK.M.Partly replying to another thread
pacey988 0 Posted August 25, 2007 Author Posted August 25, 2007 Yes, it is not complete, the full piece runs about 2 minutes and 30 seconds. I will record the Today show for as long as I can, and I will try to get as much of it as I can. I'm glad you liked it.Woah,I nearly fell off my chair. It's an excellent piece.I love when the full strings are unleashed at 1:48, pure Williams beauty of Leaving Home caliber.
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Holy crap! What a lovely little gem of a piece...thanks a lot for this, Pacey! Great sound from modern Williams.Ray Barnsbury
pacey988 0 Posted August 25, 2007 Author Posted August 25, 2007 It's incredible. I'm glad I could share it with you. Actually, I think the piece runs either at or under 2 minutes, partly because they looped around part of the music in the beginning. I will try to see if I can get the rest of it, only a small portion of it is missing due to the clips with audio overlapping the theme. I think he did a slower version of this theme as heard in the Hardball interview with the same trumpet solos in it.
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Yeah, that slower version is what I remember from a couple years ago. I think KM called it Tom Brokaw's theme.Ray Barnsbury
Jacob 1 Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 A nice little gem indeed. Thanks for sharing.J Dan - on his 10th straight listen through.
King Mark 3,975 Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 section 0.50 to 1.10 is the best Williams moment in a long time
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 This thread should maybe be re-titled, so people know there's a new Williams piece here.Ray Barnsbury
fommes 165 Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Thanks Pacey for all the trouble! Great to finally hear this in a decent form.
King Mark 3,975 Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Maybe the actual recording is a 3 minute concert version going through different instruments. It's a great sweeping theme, sounds very "vintage" Williams.I guess there's close to 0 chance of ever getting this on c.d.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 There's no chance since this was not composed by a Brian Tyler or Steve Lablonski.
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 The opening strings sound very Copland (especially recalling Rodeo's Hoe-Down), which I like...it's definitely a more pastoral, Americana piece than the original "The Mission." Ray Barnsbury
pacey988 0 Posted August 26, 2007 Author Posted August 26, 2007 Yes, that's what the music reminded me of...I actually should have said that this is one of the new themes that he wrote for NBC News, as part of the 20th anniversary update to the original "Mission" package. According to the web site for the company that produced the recording, Man Made Music, there is about 10 minutes of new material that was composed. The opening strings sound very Copland (especially recalling Rodeo's Hoe-Down), which I like...it's definitely a more pastoral, Americana piece than the original "The Mission." Ray Barnsbury
scissorhands 16 Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Steve Lablonski.Jablonsky. Is that your chick, Stefan? She looks nice I like Williams' americana, so I like this theme. Really cool.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Jablonsky. Is that your chick, Stefan? She looks nice Jablonski is not my chick, the girl in the picture is.........Obviously.
King Mark 3,975 Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 I've compared this to the music from the Hardline interview and it's the same segments in different order, only the full string middle part is new .I think the french horn segment should open the piece since we see Williams starting to conduct it there. It's missing the opening which is in the Hardline interview.i think the looped opening is from a different pieceK.M.
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Just checking in to see if there's been any more progress on recording a fuller version of this piece. Also, is it the Today Show theme, or is there another name for it? I'm just now putting it on my iPod and wasn't sure what to call it.Ray Barnsbury
Miguel Andrade 1,725 Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Does anyone knows if the video with footage of Williams recording this theme is still online? And did anyone saved the link?
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Sorry Miguel, I'm not sure. I've been hearing this theme here and there throughout the Today Show, which is cool. They've been using it with a series of ten iconic/significant locations in the U.S. (the Grand Canyon was #1, shown today) and it works really well for that sort of thing. It'd really be nice to get a full, studio recording of this.Ray Barnsbury
Marcus 395 Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Please, can somebody PM this piece to me?Much obliged,Marcus
