> JWFan, the most CIVILIZED forum on the internet?

Just the most restricted, perhaps. Because there is a difference from a natural civility that comes from maturity, and a civility which is enforced from outside by complex rules on those who may want to do otherwise but the threat facing them is too great to do so. My experience is that Jwfan is one of the most restrictive and moderator trigger happy forums that I frequent.

It's one of the most diverse in terms of topics and conversation. Then again, I don't go to that many message boards in general, this being the only real one that I post regularly.

Oh yes.

*ahem* like me...

Anyways my take on this forum, while yes many of us bicker with each other from time to time but like richuk said everyone has mutual respect for one another for the most part. As far as being the most civilized..well it is to a certain extent but it is the best forum I have visited through out the years. I will agree with Steef that FSM is plain dull.

FSM is one of the ugliest forums (and websites) I've ever seen. It really needs an update.

I suppose that by pretending we're all happy and cooperative (that is, by banning discussion of religion/politics), we keep the vitriol to a minimum. If we were actually allowed to talk about issues that have meaning in the world, the results could be violent.

I agree with you on this.

The thing is, it would be violent. Look at IMDb, it's barely moderated and it's considered one of the worst forums on the internet. Message boards on politically charged films (or religious films) can get plain disgusting.

Is it just my computer, or does the internet get really slow when you're trying to read Soundtrack Collector forum topics?

I'd rather Lukas spend his resources releasing CDs.

FSM does have quite a few people in the business who post there and there are alot of good people but it also does have quite a few idiots that post there, one person finally seems to have been banned or has given up, Filmtracks is a joke and sadly moviemusic.com's forum is not what it once was. Intrada's forum is pretty good, not alot of crap goes on over there.

To true about Moviemusic and especially Filmtracks. Filmtracks is a complete waste of human breath and time.

I sometimes like Filmtracks for its reviews (although it's blatant that Clemmenson has prejudices against several composers, he'd be right at home here) but I haven't read the message boards for years.

JerryGoldsmithOnline is pretty good, but full of tumble weeds. HornerShrine is good for a laugh and Elfman's Music for a Darkened People and Groovy Yak's Elfman Shrine are all quite civilized.

There's no place on the internet I'd rather be. I have met some true friends here (not the least of which is that guy whose post is right above mine).

I feel a group hug coming......:)

It's better than FSM for sure.

FSM is a Goldsmithian regime.I can physically feel the bad vibes towards Williams fans when I read post there. It's always Goldsmith this,Goldsmith that...

Also, part of the fun of forums is discussing unreleased music and how to get a new piece when it pops up. The hypocritical attitude towards discussing boots at FSM is annoying (most of the moderators and people "in the business" who want those no boot talk rules applied have vast collections of bootlegs themselves).

there's also lots of people who are full of themselves.

When a new recording of a Williams piece surfaces, the general attitude here is to share it with everyone interested.Over there, people would tend to greedily keep such a thing for themselves,or e-mail a record company to report you for copyright infringement.

That's another reason why I love this forum. Despite the endless arguments and debates, we are all here because we love one thing, and when something new surfaces, we share it with all who are interested.

Wanna bet? :)

As a label it's in FSM's best interest to delete any discussion of bootlegs.

Yeah, that's true. The film music board is fine except for the ridiculous practice of closing all redundant threads. That means that if there has ever been a thread on any subject similar to the thread you post, yours will be closed. To be nice, though, the moderator will bump the old thread for you (sometimes it will be as old as three years). But what's the point? Your defunct thread isn't deleted, so there's no conservation of space and bandwidth.

Posted

Oh yeah, they always bark at you for creating a thread that was discussed 40,000 pages ago. Their community forums are populated by the most pointless, boring threads imaginable, and the "Senate Floor" is filled with establishment hounds who like to score political points with their obsession with "pwning" their opponents. I'd call that forum "Pwn Wars".

Posted
Well, it seems to me that as much as we have arguments, and some members treat other members like dirt, this might be the most civilized film music messageboard anywhere. I hope it continues as it does. :)

hahahaha

Most civilized film music forum? Perhaps. Most civilized forum in general? Definitly not.

Same here. I've visiting this place for seven years - it's the longest I've ever been anywhere, online or not.

I like to pop into FSM every once in a while because there are industry insiders posting there so it's a good place for news, but I don't care for much of their discussion. They seem to lack that wacky JWFan sense of humor.

Posted

You mean how we slavishly adore everything about John Williams and refuse to see any failures in his works?

I mean, I figured you all were just joking about that. Right? Right?

Posted

Let me put it this way: you'd never, ever see an Illaryaja thread at FSM.

Posted

I've some truly great friends here, and I would call it my "internet home".

Even civilisation isn't civilised anymore.

And this place certainly isn't.

We never should have had one here either.

But now the name is useful for fun purposes.

Oh this is funny. I see my name mentioned in this thread and yes, I was quite the angry hothead back then. Oh how things have changed. Ryan was also mentioned, but he rants just for the sheer amusement of it. He's one of the nicest and most professional guys I've ever met in person.

Actually I post at MMUK. It's a fun place with a small group of nice people who don't greet new posters with lines like "who the hell are you?"

I believe Mr. Tilton is a composer.

Any relation to Charlene "Poison Tits" Tilton???

The Jedi Council Forums would be the most fascist and authoritarian forum I've ever been to.

THANK YOU! Jeez, I could not believe when I tried to defend workers with poor working conditions and forced prostitution there. It was as if I brandished a hammer and sickle and shouting "Death to Capitalism!" The moderators even started trolling me and I had to report them - and nothing happened. LOL

Posted
I believe Mr. Tilton is a composer.

Has worked closely with Michael Giacchino. And was indeed a fairly irritable fellow in his Filmtracks days. :) Welcome, Chris Tilton!

Posted
Well if he's a composer then I retract my remarks. My apologizes Chris.

So you'll only give him respect because he's a composer?

Well banning discussion on half of the real matters of the world and then sitting on top of it and calling yourself civilized...is hardly civilized.

It's akin to one brushing his garbage under his bed and proclaiming "I have the cleanest room in the world!"

I'll give it the civilized award when people can have a mature discussion about something valuable, which I have yet to see. At the moment, we're just barely talking civil when it comes to film music.

Posted

Late in, but in nonetheless. Most civilised? Don't make me laugh. Most cliquey? Duh, I wonder...

I've known Dog Rescues more civilised than this place. And that doesn't include the staff.

I only realised just how elitist and bitchy film music lovers really are when I joined this forum

I'm hurt. I thought after I'd sent you that cue from the complete PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN score (the one without SFX) you'd be complacent. But I guess my reprimanding you for sharing it -- and causing my email inbox a splitting headache -- has left you burnt?
