What is your least favourite score by John Williams from the past 25 or so years (arguably his prime)?

I find myself least listening to scores like Sabrina and Stepmom.

:P I dunno, all are good, Stanley and Iris?

I would have to say Always and Hook, two of my least favorite scores.

The correct term for me would be most hated John Williams score:

That would be "Images".

Proof positive that the concept of "atonal music" and the man "John Williams" should NEVER under ANY circumstances be brought together.

 I like that score.

Hey if you like it thats cool. However, it is just painful for me to hear Johnny Williams without the themage.

Catch my drift?

Besides Morn I think it can be safely said that ALOT of people do not like John Williams doing scores like that.

I mean a perfect example can be found this year.

Look at people's negative reactions to the largely atonal Minority Report score and the atonal bits of AOTC (of which there was a considerable amount).

I am a big "Leitmotif" Johnny man! I think most Williams fans are seeing as how that is the music most fans hold as their favorites and indeed is the music that got them into JW in the first place.

I mean I still have yet to hear one person on this board say "I remember how I became a big fan of Williams' music the first time I heard "Images".

Have you?

Posted

I don't think AOTC or MR were that atonal at all. They are rather modern.

And a lot of people do like Williams doing scores like that.

Posted

Modern, Atonal, its all the same to me!

I generally classify score into two categories:

1) Classically styled scores: Scores that put emphasis on themes and melodies, have heavily structured music, stick mostly to conventional forms of creating music.

2) Modernist score: Scores without any or very lacking in themes and structure. Music that is created in less conventional ways.

I am with the A category FAR more than the B category when it comes to JW.

Modern music does not lack structure.....

Heartbeeps, Stepmom, Sabrina. I love all the themes though! :)

Yeah! They should come out with a JW CD featuring the great themes from lesser knwon JW films like these that certain people might not be as eager to pick up.

Sleepers also has a good theme even though I am not crazy about the score.

Rosewood beats CE3K by a hair for my least listened to JW CDs.

:wow: Morlock :? You dont know what you're missing. Listen again to CO3K pleeeeease.

Believe me I've tried.

I wish I liked it more, but I just can't connect with it. The only cue I really like is not even on the soundtrack in it's original form.

Dont worry. I like the romantic older sound of Close Encounters which others may view as a bit out of date now, and most importantly its a film from my early youth, so its a score which is deeply ingrained in me. I think thats why i love it so. I find that with everyone here. Depending on when members would of been in their mid teens, their favourite score is often a JW scored film whichever era. Thats why i'm a fan of E.T and Close Encounters the most.

That was my post above by the way. Is'nt being logged out so infuriating

I'm curious which cue it is :) Which part of the film?

That's a great point, and I totally agree. I believe that being around for the release of a score has a large impact on how someone likes it. I'm not saying it's the case with everyone and every score, but I know it affects me, and not in a way that can be helped.

Justin Good choice mate..Good choice. Please obtain it soooooon :)

Indysolo: You felt compelled to obtain Close Encounter Justin?

Justin: Yeah, you might say that.

Melange: What did you expect to find Justin?

Justin: A great Score. That's not crazy, is it?

( Indysolo and Melange speak to each other in French)

Justin : Hold it, hold it, hold it! Is that it? Is that all you're gonna ask me? Well, I got a couple of thousand, god-damn questions, you know. I want to speak to someone in charge. I want to lodge a complaint. You have no right to withold such a classic soundtrack from the new generation. If this is such an old score, how come I know everything in such detail? I've never heard it before. How come I know so much? (raising his voice) WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON AROUND HERE?! WHO THE HELL ARE YOU PEOPLE?!

Yeah, who needs those, now that Williams has perfected this type of writing later in his career. Now that I think of if,now that we have the Potter scores, who needs the cruder writing he used in Star Wars,E.T. and Raiders.

i was just saying the LIS scores are extremely pivotal in Williams career regarding his later sci-fi/adventure/fantasy scores.I for one think the LIS c.d. should be in the "essential discography".

I'm curious which cue it is   Which part of the film?

I can't remember the name, but I believe it is played partialy at the begining of track 15.

As Far as I can remember it is only used once, very effectivley. Right after the brain storming scene, just as the head guy says "...fear of god into every living christian sole..." over the scene when they 'dress' the trucks and start driving out.

Now, I believe I've listened to the CD from start to finish at least a couple of times, but still, in case I just missed it, feel free to point it out.

Morlock if you don't like it send it to me. :(

Justin -Who reeeeeeeeeeeeally wants it for Christmas! :)

You're barking up the wrong tree- I'm Jewish. I don't do the Christmas thing. :biglaugh:

and yet this is the same man who above defended Williams' more Modernist and Atonal works. :)

But I think it's a good step. :)

Thanks Malenge for letting me reverse engineer your sig.

LOL I must admit it made me do a double take.

Is the spelling mistake on my name revenge for the stefancos/morn incident? :biglaugh:

No, just a mistake. :)

Around here, we all know Morn's a wildly inventive speller.

The insults at JWfan.net even have a style of their own.

Ahhh I love it here! :)

KM, you know and I know this fellow doesn't have a clue. Both LIS theme's are among John's greatest tv works, and are just plain good.

Back to the worst stuff, has anyone mention Born on the Fourth of July.

deadly dull stuff. If it has anyone usefull purpose, its that its a fine dust collector

Well whatever that means, here is some more. :) And you might notice these new 2 are thematic even.

Mmm. I tried to get a few buttons in a horizontal line too. But it did'nt work. LOL

Looks like vertical ones will have to do until i work it out somehow :)

I'd rather the clips. :)

I'd like so much to log-in...but it's still impossible !!!

My least favorite Williams scores are : The Patriot, Rosewood, Saving Private Ryan (despite the wonderful "Hymn to the Fallen")...and i must say that i agree concerning Lost in Space...i own it only because i'm a huge Williams fan !? :)

But i've listened to it just once or twice, not more... :)

Rosewood and JFK have to be the least favorite of mine.

Actually I love the theme to JFK, it's just the listening experience on the CD that is so disjointed that makes it a hard listen.

Rosewood, I haven't even made it all the way through it yet. Even though it has been in the player at least 4 times.
