ST-321 42 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Seven Years in Tibet was played during the pairs skating last night. Anybody hear any other JW during the winter games?
indy4 160 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I haven't been watching too much of the Olympics, but I did get to see that God-awful music that those two singers sang at the Opening Ceremony.
Uni 307 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 They toss in bits of his four Olympic compositions at various times (most often when going to commercial). It's actually one of the things I like best about the Olympics any more, to see the indelible stamp the man has left on their legacy through music.- Uni
Ollie 1,375 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 The only things I've watched from the Winter Olympics were the nations marching in during the opening ceremony.Other than that I haven't bothered with them.
Wojo 2,458 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I'm bummed that the USA hockey matches are early enough in the day that I'm not home from work, while the Canadian games are in prime time.I can't figure out why.Plus, with the switch from analog to digital TV, I can't get the audio component of my local NBC TV channel on 87.7 FM. Although when I listened to the men's hockey and basketball finals at work in years past, they would lose. Jinx.
King Mark 3,975 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I'm not recording the commercial JW bumpers this time...but it bugs me when I hear a clean SXF free one I don't have
Trumpeteer 304 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Maybe this question has been asked ad nauseum before, but...Does John Williams get paid royalties every time NBC plays any parts of his Olympic themes? Or did NBC pay for them outright?I don't think the latter is true, because he composed his first Olympic theme for the 1984 Games, and ABC broadcast that. Does the IOC own the rights to the music, and they sell them to the broadcaster? In any case, I wonder if JW sees any money every two years when this music is played. I know "Bugler's Dream" was not composed by him, but everything else was.
King Mark 3,975 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 JW probably stopped counting his money a long time ago
indy4 160 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 I wonder how much he makes per CD off all these releases from labels like FSM, Intrada, etc. And how much he makes of a sale of one OST, for that matter.
Olivier 5 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 A French skater used Williams' theme from Munich last yesterday.

Here's the Variety article about money and the Olympic music: http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117991375.html?categoryId=2525&cs=1
Maurizio 6,913 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Williams made more money out of his NBC stuff (both news and Olympic) than for Star Wars, I guess.
Ollie 1,375 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Some soundtrack producer once mentioned Williams could have retired from his royalties for Jaws.
Joe Brausam 234 Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 One of the skaters tonight, Patrick Chan (?) was accompanied by an orchestral suite from Phantom of the Opera. Does anyone know the origin of this suite? I'd love to get it.
Bowie 48 Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Seven Years in Tibet was played during the pairs skating last night.Do we know which pair used it? Would be awesome to watch this.

artyjeffrey 20 Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 So, actual people have been watching the olympics! I am amazed.
John Crichton 4 Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 I always watch the Olympics. But I'm in the minority in more ways than one- figure skating is one of the few events that hold little interest for me, apart from seeing who wins.
ST-321 42 Posted February 21, 2010 Author Posted February 21, 2010 My wife loves figure skating and does watch. I prefer curling.
Wojo 2,458 Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Curling's interesting enough. Really the only event that interests me at the Olympics is the hockey. I don't pay much attention to skiing or speed skating like I used to.
John Crichton 4 Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 The only envents I don't really care for to one degree or another are snowboarding, freestyle skiing, hockey, and figure skating. I'll watch anything else.
Ollie 1,375 Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 There's nothing about the Winter Olympics that gets my attention.
davros72 1 Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 The Russian Women's Curling team was rather nice to watch.
hornist 1,261 Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 There's nothing about the Winter Olympics that gets my attention.I think there is one reason to watch Olympic Games , att least women's figure skating. And she comes from my city.
Hlao-roo 390 Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 My wife loves figure skating and does watch. I prefer curling.I prefer hurling.
John Crichton 4 Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Isn't that a summer sport starting in 2012? The 5,000 meter London pub crawl?
Bowie 48 Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 So yeah, the Israeli Free Dance pair used (the Theme from) Schindler's List to demonstrate the Holocaust.
chinaismine 64 Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 I'm not recording the commercial JW bumpers this time...but it bugs me when I hear a clean SXF free one I don't haveI don't know if you have this one, but here's a bumper I heard tonight that sounded unfamiliar (to me) and I managed to grab a recording of:http://www.megaupload.com/?d=JBHGBN5G
Wojo 2,458 Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 The Al Michaels (or whoever) at the end adds to the authenticity.

Ollie 1,375 Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 Isn't that a summer sport starting in 2012? The 5,000 meter London pub crawl? At one time I would have won the gold medal for the USA.
Wojo 2,458 Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 There's nothing like a sport where the more you play, the more ineligible you become.
davros72 1 Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 Reminded of a note in "Summon the Heroes" CD... mentioning one of the pieces had won a medal in music competition in the Olympics. Which sounded incredibly odd. Finally got around to checking into it. http://en.wikipedia....e_Olympic_Gameshttp://en.wikipedia....rt_competitionsIt just seems plain weird to think of someone winning an Olympic medal for composing music or creating architecture or painting. I can understand why they stopped doing it (artists were deemed "professionals" versus amateur athletes, etc). Also, can you imagine NBC trying to cover *that*?
Wojo 2,458 Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 However, the definition of an "amateur athlete" has become outdated over the decades. Amateurs still get paid a lot of money through sponsorships, regardless of playing for any "professional" team. And going against that, NHL players have competed in the Winter Games since 1998, while full-time athletes from the Soviet bloc and Eastern Europe were on Olympic teams going back to the 70s, hence their domination in the event.
davros72 1 Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 That's true. Not to mention all the NBA players making up the so-called "Dream Teams" every Summer Olympics. So I guess there's no reason why we can't have Arts Competitions back on the menu!
John Crichton 4 Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 I think at this point every Olympic athelete is a professional to one degree or another. The only team sport that didn't go pro, at least in the US, was baseball. And now it's no longer an Olympic sport.
Thor 9,362 Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 The winter Olympics is a HUGE thing in Norway, since it also contains several of our national sports (cross-country skiing etc.). I've been following the games avidly, and although we are no. 3 on the medal statistics with 17 medals (after Germany and USA), it's still been some disastrous games for Norway. I hope it will pick up a little bit in the last few days.I'm actually NOT that interested in hockey or figure skating (the former is confusing, since I never see the damn puck, the latter is sleep-inducingly boring), which seems to be the only sports that the Americans care about. Which is a bit strange, since Americans dominate in so many other events too.I'm very excited about the 4x10 km relay tonight!Oh, and Williams...Norwegian TV has actually used a couple of the Williams themes in their broadcasts and reportages. I've heard both the 1984 theme and the Salt Lake theme. I have no idea if they pay any royalties, though.
Wojo 2,458 Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 NBA stars can compete in the Summer Games because they do not conflict with the NBA postseason, which ends in June. But since the Olympics won't move ice hockey to the Summer Games to enjoy the same thing, the Winter Olympics puts a two week gap in the heart of the NHL season, to extend the two month long NHL postseason out even longer.I want to see the NHL players taken out of the Olympics. It puts the risk of injury on all the players involved. It could dampen team spirit when international foes return to the same team to compete for the Stanley Cup. And it dilutes the sense of amateur accomplishment, because the Russian, American, and Canadian teams are stacked with NHL players, so comparing any of these games to Lake Placid 1980 is silly.

Ollie 1,375 Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 Boy it must have been fun partying with the Canadian woman's hockey team last night.
Thor 9,362 Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Boy it must have been fun partying with the Canadian woman's hockey team last night. Why, you have a thing for "tomboy girls"?
John Crichton 4 Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Apollo Ohno has proven that he's just a shadow of him former self, this should be his last Olympics. The rules of short track are also way to restrictive, anyone see the BS DQ of South Korea in the women's relay? Let 'em race, dammit!
MissPadmé 17 Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Has anybody detailed info about the Howard Shore piece for the Olympics? The 4 secs. of it we heard in Jan. sounded nice. WAs it rejected afterall?
Quintus 6,495 Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Wow, I heard shades of ID4 and RotK (Aragorn) in that.
King Mark 3,975 Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 There's playing Olympic Fanfare and Theme at the closing ceremonies in the stadium
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 A French skater used Williams' theme from Munich last yesterday. My brother told me a skater used Jack's Theme from Pirates.
