Hitch 60 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 So what Herrmann masterpieces can we expect to see released this year? I'm hoping for legitimate releases of PSYCHO and MARNIE. Wouldn't it be interesting to see if the master sesssion tapes to THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY and THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH can be retrieved from the Universal vaults. Any further thoughts on the matter?
crocodile 9,724 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 There was a pretty good re-recording of Citizen Kane last year, wasn't there? I haven't heard it. This thread reminds me that I need to check it out.Anyway... Happy Birthday to the old Grouch!Karol
Naïve Old Fart 13,023 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 No particular thoughts on what should be released, but his centenary needs to be celebrated. he was The Beatles of film music: whatever anyone did, he did it first, and that makes him the greatest film composer who ever lived.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Didnt Alex North do jazz in film before Herrmann?
Hitch 60 Posted January 9, 2011 Author Posted January 9, 2011 Didnt Alex North do jazz in film before Herrmann?Wasn't CITIZEN KANE all about jazz? Wasn't Rosebud a trumpet?
Omen II 1,300 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 So what Herrmann masterpieces can we expect to see released this year?I'm pretty sure that Tribute Film Classics have been recording The Battle of Neretva, which should be nice and loud. As far as live performances go, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's annual film music concert this year will include a special tribute to Bernard Herrmann and I am sure there will be other Herrmannesque delights yet to surface during 2011. I heard a quite wonderful suite from North by Northwest performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra this afternoon (consisting of the Overture - Conversation Piece - Matchbook - The Wild Ride / Mount Rushmore).I think that Morgan and Stromberg were also going to record The Devil and Daniel Webster at some point?
Naïve Old Fart 13,023 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Didnt Alex North do jazz in film before Herrmann?Maybe, but Shostakovitch got there first.Madness! No, Stefan, that's from "The Bridge On The River Kwai".
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 whatever anyone did, he did it first, and that makes him the greatest film composer who ever lived.Maybe, but Shostakovitch got there first.Contradiction!
crocodile 9,724 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Speaking of both composers... Wasn't Herrmann a big fan of Shostakovich's Hamlet score?Karol
indy4 160 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I should reslisten to my Herrmann scores sometime this year (I only have 5).

What I said was true...from a certain point of view...
Hitch 60 Posted January 9, 2011 Author Posted January 9, 2011 I should relisten to my Herrmann scores sometime this year (I only have 5).You could sell some of your John Williams collection...like all of them and get yourself re-acquainted with an old friend
Ollie 1,375 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I believe the labels have some Herrmann lined up for this year. I think MV mentioned that over at FSM.There was a pretty good re-recording of Citizen Kane last year, wasn't there? I haven't heard it. This thread reminds me that I need to check it out.Anyway... Happy Birthday to the old Grouch!KarolThe only complete re-recording was by Varese in 1999. I think it may be out of print.

I'm also hoping someone takes another crack at fixing the original score to North By Northwest.

And the recent Chandos one. Which, I heard, is quite fantastic.Karol

Apparently the way the cues are structured, they were either too short and too many or wouldn't work for a structured album. There was talk about maybe making a suite out of the score.
Hitch 60 Posted January 9, 2011 Author Posted January 9, 2011 James Sedares and the New Zealand Symphony have already done a suite from THE DEVIL & DANIEL WEBSTER. I don't need anymore suites. Suites are what keep dental surgeons at play.
Sharkissimo 1,978 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Personally I'd really like a complete release of THE BRIDE WORE BLACK.
Maglorfin 219 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I'm pretty sure that Tribute Film Classics have been recording The Battle of Neretva, which should be nice and loud.Wow, this sounds very exciting! Any idea when and which label might release this?

#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Alfred Hitchcock: The Dian Fossey Years!
Naïve Old Fart 13,023 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 It's not strictly on-topic, but could some knid soul post "Stop The Planet Of The Apes, I Want To Get Off"?
Hitch 60 Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 "Stop The Planet Of The Apes, I Want To Get Off"?I can see Benny bitch-slapping Jerry with an ape mask. LOL!
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Did Bennie Ram-horn him?
Hitch 60 Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 "There's Goldsmith!!! He's stealing my music"
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Did Benjamin Herrmann ever do Avant Garde with mixing bowls?
Hitch 60 Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 Benjamin?? I think you're getting confused again.
Naïve Old Fart 13,023 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 "There's Goldsmith!!! He's stealing my music"If Herrmann is what I say he is, didn't everyone steal his music?
Hitch 60 Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 Right down to that note pinching John T. Williams. He'll burn I tell ya!!!
