Gelantine 0 Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Hi guys,I´m workin´on a presentation about where John Williams has found inspiration/ where he oriented while working on his scores.I´ve found some material about Star Wars. It says he copied(well actually I don´t really like this formulation) from Dvorak. Moreover I found statements which said he orientated at Stravinsky´s "Ritt der Walküren".Also, I have read interviews where Williams talks about being influenced by film composers Korngold and Herrmann as well as classical composers such as Stravinsky and Prokofiev.Well I need some help with the scores from 2000 til now.Let´s see: "memories of a Geisha" "The Patriot" "Terminal" "Munich" "Harry Potter" (well I heard here´s a connection to Tschaikowsky´s "Nussknacker" "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the crystal skull"hope you guys can helps me...In best case I need some examples where you can hear this best regards,Gelantine
Thor 9,362 Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Well, if someone's told you that he was inspired by Stravinsky's "Ride of the Valkyries", they must surely have been smoking, because that is composed by Richard Wagner. Perhaps you mean "Sacre de Printemps"? The two-note ostinato in that piece is obviously an inspiration for the JAWS theme, but that is common knowledge by now. They both probably tapped into the same technique to connote the primal quality of the subject matter.I'm not really sure what you're asking for regarding his post-2000 scores?
Gelantine 0 Posted March 26, 2011 Author Posted March 26, 2011 well I didn´t really find results for this time. The only thing I found is that he based on Samuel Barber’s Second Essay for the Hedwig Theme. Therefore I wanted to ask whether you guys know something about this time period.
publicist 4,650 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 well I didn´t really find results for this time. The only thing I found is that he based on Samuel Barber’s Second Essay for the Hedwig Theme. ???Try Prokoviev's 5th symphony for most of his 70's/80's comedy music (examples would range from FITZWILLY - "More Theft" - to the droid music from STAR WARS etc.)try Howard Hanson's symphony THE ROMANTIC for the second part of E. T.`s finale (very obvious)try Gustav Holst's MARS from THE PLANETS as obvious inspiration for STAR WARS space battle music (most obviously after the main title of A NEW HOPE)try Puccini's NESSUN DORMA for the theme from BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY (though Williams makes it gorgeously better)try Tchaikovsky's NUTCRACKER suite for HOME ALONE (main title, holiday flight) and HARRY POTTER (Hedwig's Theme)try Khatchaturians GAYANEH adagio for the cue CYBERTRONICS from A. I.try Aaron Copland for lots of americana writing in Williams' canontry Bernard Herrmann as role model for THE FURY and parts of MINORITY REPORT
Thor 9,362 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 try Bernard Herrmann as role model for THE FURY and parts of MINORITY REPORTAnd the main theme from WITCHES OF EASTWICK.
