  1. 1. Which is the better score for the death of a big monster?

    • Big G Goes To Monster Heaven (Godzilla 1998)
    • Beauty Killed the Beast (King Kong 2005)

Both are remade giant monster movies, by the way.

Godzilla is the last great score by David Arnold, in my opinion, and the worst one, compare to ID4, Stargate and Tomorrow Never Dies.

King Kong wrote in only 3 weeks. But it is one of the very best of James Newton Howard. Both the action and romantic themes are perfect. I still remember that when King Kong dies, the whole cinema was silence. The only thing you can hear was the female vocal of the score.

Well, I think the film and the script must respond for this as well. At least the audience would feel really sad when King Kong dies. But when Godzilla dies, I think, "OK, finally! This terrible film end!" No matter how great the score was, it can't helps the film or make me few sad for Godzilla's death.

Anyway, let's just back to the scores themselves......

Godzilla. Only because I like the score better. There's nothing wrong with the two final tracks on King Kong OST, however.

Kong. I've never managed to get into Arnold's score, and JNH's score was possibly the last major one he did before he sold his soul to Zimmer.

It's a fine score. I listened to it the other day actually. But I'm not the fan of the action music, but the gentle and voudeville stuff is quite good. I really like That's All There Is... track.

Voted Beauty Killed the Beast, though I can't stand either score. David Arnold and James Newton Howard don't do much for me in general.

I voted for Arnold, even though the film isn't Godzilla, I don't care what the title says, it's not Godzilla. The cue is fun all the way through.

JNH's score is good but I feel there are times when a sequence doesn't need music and the battle atop the Empire State Building is one of those moments. Plus it frustrates me that some of it sounds like Howard Shore and that pisses me off even more that his score was dumped.

I've only heard King Kong, so I can't really say. I do like that score, though.

You don't have LLL's Godzilla??? Man that score is awesome it's got a mix of Stargate and ID-4 but still good.

It's my favourite score from Arnold, actually. Sadly it's out of print.

Amazon has a few copies of the LaLaLand set listed for $45.00, both new and used I believe.

It's not that bad. Could be worse.

Same as ScreenArchives then. I'll see, maybe it's time to get this thing before it disappears completely.

BTW for the scores, I pick Godzilla over King Kong any day of the week. King Kong tends to drag out, Godzilla does not.

I like them both well enough, but Big G gets my vote.

By the way, does anyone know how such a long release of Kong was afforded, with the choir?

For an L.A. recorded score with a full choir, it's an astonishingly comprehensive release that leaves me wanting very little additional music.
