Jim Ware was at that concert!

I heard some snippets the other day on the radio. It was about as interesting as actor-cum 'musician' orchestral music can be and almost certainly would never had seen the light of day if he didn't have an illustrious acting career under his belt.

I haven't heard any of the score, but I did hear the pieces he wrote and played in the film HANNIBAL... based on that.. I can't really see him writing a film score. Note when I say this, its not because he can't write. He can, but unless his writing skills have improved since Hannibal, I think he needs a bit more experience in composition before attempting a film score, thats all. The pieces he played on piano were good.

Anthony Hopkins is an actor!

He may have some hobbies, but he is still an actor!

He's clearly an artist, Steef. Artists don't have to stick to one medium to express themselves.

Nah, I don't call actors that. I find actors who position themselves under the 'artist' umbrella pretentious. That painting is clearly the musings of a fairly talented person, but they're a dime a dozen.

I don't.

Artist: A person who produces works in any of the arts that are primarily subject to aesthetic criteria.

BTW, it is I who says Hopkins is an artist (based upon the definition of the word), not Hopkins himself. The latter would be a whole other matter.

True. I'm not sure Hopkins has ever said anything of the sort. Then again, maybe he has.

But when I see an acToor like Hopkins using their fame and considerable clout to release commercial recordings of their orchestral musings the cynic in me sneers ego. It's just my predisposition.

Saying that, I did warm to Hugh Laurie's ongoing flirt with a recording career. When asked why he did it, he basically said it was for his own amusement. He's always enjoyed mucking about with singing, but he couldn't believe someone would be "stupid" enough to pay him to and was frankly amazed when it not only did turn out to be not awful, but that people actually liked and bought it. I liked his modesty and throwaway attitude towards it. He was actually laughing through the whole question.

Yes, but whether he was a master or a great artist, I do not know. I've never seen any of his paintings.

Of course, I doubt if he's comparable to Hopkins who has been looking for ways to express himself (through different art forms) most of his life. Who knows, maybe he's a much better painter than Hopkins.

He murdered a few million innocents and sadly his painting career was put on hold.

Posted

Yeah, countless lost. He might have gone on to paint at least thirty notable works.

Sorry that I resurrect an old thread, but... has this been posted?

(and how can I embed the video?)

It's very nice. Hopkins is certainly a decent composer. All his T's are crossed and his I's are dotted.

But it is in the end, just another waltz. Almost stereotypically so.

The best part for me are the first 2 minutes or so, before it becomes a full Vienna-style panto-piece. Quite moody and lyrical.

Not that fucking André Rieu.

What is wrong with him?

He brings light orchestral music to millions of people. In many ways what he does and what John Williams did during his tenure with the Boston Pops isnt all that different.

He's the Kenny G of violinists, plus he's everywhere on Sky Arts.

We have to keep in mind that he wrote this at the age of 26-27.

John Williams himself didn't write Jaws or Star Wars at that age.

But John Williams went on to become a major film composer, with a reputable repertoire for the concert hall.

Anthony Hopkins became an actor instead.

The only reason this was performed is because it was composed by Hannibal the cannibal.

I meant that we shouldn't judge the piece by the standards of a major composer who works for years, but by the standards of a starting young man.

(not that you did it, i was just saying..)

I can hear "something there" and I'm almost sure, if Hopkins had pursued a composer's career he would excel!

He certainly has a gift for melody that he could have developed.

Can't listen to it. Not available in my country apparently.

Thanks filmmusic! A simple waltz yes, but that's a great melody. I'd like to hear his other concert works.

He's done some film music too. Worth checking out. Hopkins is my second favourite actor of all time, but not only because of his acting skills -- also because of his persona and general creativity which encompasses his music skills and his painting.
