For those who wish there were complete albums of Vangelis' soundtracks as opposed to what arranges for his albums.

Good news for soundtrack fans in general though with this being an isolated score to a major award winning movie. Although, not knowing the logistics, I'm sure it is easier to pay royalties to one man than to an entire orchestra.

My lifelong wish finally comes true

Yeah well... screw you all on the horse you came in on.

The music of the film is different than the CD, which is a rerecording, I believe.

Chariots has never been one of my favorite Vangelis albums (I have the LP) and I haven't seen the film since its original release but the running men on the beach scene and the moment when one of the main characters falls during the Olympic Games are two musical moments I still remember to this very day.

Oh, stewdog, you're the guy that used to use the avatar of Vangelis wearing a red ball cap, right? My bad. At any rate, the only Vangelis CD that I own is some anniversary edition of CoF.

No worries. Besides being a fan, the reason I'm curious about it was like my original post, it might be good news that a major award winning film will be getting an isolated score, and that could trickle down to other films.

But you remind me, maybe I should dig up that old avatar...

and the winner is...WHAT? Is this correct? Seriously? Can you double check this? No, okay. And the winner is Vangelis for Chariots of Fire....over John Williams Raiders of the Lost Ark, can you ****ing believe this, two years in a row....

Mhm. One of the most blasphemous WTF moments the Oscars have had...

That was the moment the oscar for best score became a prize with as much weight and significance as a wet bag of flaming poo.

Vangelis was more deserving than G. Morodor and Fame, I'm gonna live for ever, I'm gonna learn how to fly, HIGH.

Do orchestra members receive royalties..? Thought they just get a pay check and that's it.

I actually like this film alot and might consider the blu. Even though I don't care much for the music, I am happy they are having an isolated score on this, it's great for it's fans.

I advocate all blu's having isolated scores.

Is it bad I've never seen this movie?

I haven't.

Its a good movie, and a good score. And the famous main theme, that's just a credits theme! Never played during the film.

This is the theme which carries most of the dramatic burden in the film and boy is it a beauty. Its a simplistic theme, but it is stirring and played during the magnificent climax, its unforgettable.

But yeah, this had no business winnning over Indy. I mean how???

Posted

Don't like the theme that much. It's too bombastic. I prefer Abraham's Theme which is sad and intimate. It's frigging Blade Runner-ish too!

Posted

There is nothing wrong with bombastic. The instruments just are wrong. This worked for Blade Runner, not with these images.

You have no idea how much I disagree with you! It's too victorious for Blade Runner. It's sounds like a national anthem. Jeez!

This works with Blade Runner.

Dunno but when Eric's Theme plays during the finale at the Olympics, your chest with swell with passion as only sports movies can do to you. It is triumphant.

Guys, give the movie a chance, its a good old fashioned sports movie but very very well done. And like I say, the finale is really stirring.

Well, that's what I meant, poor wording. With these Chariot's images this music doesn't work. In BR it does work

Bad is a word I would never use to describe the movie Chariots of Fire, it's a stirring film that touches the heart. It was a worthy Best Picture winner. Red was expected to win, but I thought it was the least of the 5 best picture nominees, I would have preferred Raiders or On Golden Pond to win, really anything but Reds. The Vangelis theme was played as much as Celine's My Heart will Go On, or like a Bee Gee's song in heat.

You misinterpreted me - I wasn't saying "Is the film bad? I haven't seen it" - I was saying "Is the fact that I have not seen this film a bad thing?"

Posted

Jason, we can't see them all, but we can sure try.

Posted

Someday I'll probably get to it. Plenty of other classic films I haven't seen to get to first though.

Posted

I just came across this today. I've only heard bits and pieces of the soundtrack once, and they didn't leave much of an impression, except for the awesome theme everyone knows. I've never seen the film though, so I may just pick this up blindly... supposedly it's very good, and it has Ian Holm, plus somewhere in there is Patrick Doyle at the very beginning of his career.

Unfortunately, it looks like the isolated score will only be available on the Region B Blu-ray. Mega-fail
