Maglorfin 219 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 The renowned composer died yesterday, 68 years old. May he rest in peace!
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 That's too young! I really enjoyed his adaptation of Scott Joplin music for The Sting. And his score to The Spy Who Loved Me. RIPNobody Does It Better is a fabulous (Bond) song.
pixie_twinkle 60 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Not to mention the fantasic tongue-in-cheeck score to 2009's "The Informant", which set the entire mood for the film. Rest in peace, Sir.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I heard his theme for Sophie's Choice in concert a while back. It was excellent.
Matt C 605 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Not to mention the fantasic tongue-in-cheeck score to 2009's "The Informant", which set the entire mood for the film. Rest in peace, Sir.Oh yes, that was a definite highlight.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 He was a fine composer, his legacy will live on in his excellent scores.
Hlao-roo 390 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 His work for 'Ordinary People,' Pachelbel and all, is highly underrated. The transition scene from Karen's suicide to phoning Berger is pitch perfect dramatically.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 He was a wonderful composer. A great loss.
Omen II 1,300 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I was so saddened to read this news when I logged on this evening. Marvin Hamlisch was a damn fine songwriter, one of the best. My favourite song of his is probably Through the Eyes of Love from the film Ice Castles. You can hear Hamlisch's underscore, as well as Melissa Manchester's vocal version at the end of this clip.[media=]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WjosN1HaNAI think I might have something in my eye, if you'll excuse me for a second.
MSM 194 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 It's not bad to go knowing that what you leave behind will be known forever. The Way We Were (Barbra Streisand)
Melange 448 Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Heard this news on the radio just after leaving work. Yes the Sting, but for me best known for his wacky and funny soundtrack being an essential ingredient in one of my favourite comedy movies, Woody Allen's 'Bananas' (1971). , , , , and of course the famous Quiero la Noche intro
Miguel Andrade 1,725 Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Very sad news. Incidentally, I watched "The Sting" just last weekend, and was blown away by the scoring, the way Hamlisch so well adapted Joplin's music.
indy4 160 Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 He is one of eleven people to have reached EGOT status (he's won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony). RIP!

I saw him just this past April at the ASCAP conference and he looked great. Makes you realize how anyone can go anytime. I didn't realize he worked on Ice Castles - such a beautiful song and I loved that girl - huge crush on her from this film when I was a kid. So sad. RIP
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 It's not bad to go knowing that what you leave behind will be known forever. But if Herrmann's gonna be forgotten in 50 years, surely Hamlisch will be forgotten earlier?
Hurmm 104 Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Can't say I'm very familiar with his work, but what I've heard I've always liked. And yes, the score to The Informat totally made the movie.Rest in peace.
Maglorfin 219 Posted August 8, 2012 Author Posted August 8, 2012 The Spy Who Loved Me is a great 007 score (and song!) and the one I will personally remember him by.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 I completely agree but it's been trashed here more than once. Yes it's disco, but damn it if it isn't terrific.
Maglorfin 219 Posted August 9, 2012 Author Posted August 9, 2012 Well I don't mind it being disco, it fit the movie and the era perfectly at the time! It was done intentionally that way, and it was done great! Conti's FYEO is also disco and still it's one of my favourite 007 scores.
Wojo 2,458 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has compiled tributes to Marvin Hamlisch from several sources.http://blogs.pittsburghsymphony.org/2012/08/tributes-to-marvin-hamlisch/
Romão 2,473 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 I was on holiday when he passed away, I hadn't realised until know he had died. So sad...

It's difficult to predict in which order composers will be forgotten.
