That's my boyfriend!

The relationship between Tauriel and Legoals will likely model the one between Gimli and Legolas except this time Tauriel will be winning. And Legolas will have the line "that only counts as one". ;)

I am afraid that indeed PJ might create a battle overblown enough to make it boring.

Quite likely. But for the naysayers of RotK, I say the Siege of Gondor was done quite well.

Yeah, and during The Battle Of Five Armies, Tauriel will be like: "I never thought I'd die fighting side-by-side with anboy" and Legolas: "What about side-by-side with a boyfriend?"

Nailed it. (Y)

And of course Tauriel will be better at the Leggy stunts then Legolas himself. Bard will still end up shooting Smaug, but not before Tauriel slides along his spine!

Thats the problem with making this a trilogy! Despite the undoubtedly overblown battle that Jackson will make The Battle of the Five Armies to be, Smaug is sort of the main feature of the story. Getting rid of him with an entire film still to go is kind of problematic..

Who said he was the main feature of the story?

The way Jackson carves out these films, with the White Council, the Necromancer and all that stuff, I see little reason to assume Smaug will be the spotlight. He is the focus in the book, but, hey, this is a PJ movie!

I don't see a proper climax for film two except the death of Smaug. I don't really see a proper climax for film one either, honestly.

Thinking about it, the first film is very close to the structure of FOTR.

Leave the Shire, face the trolls/orcs/wraiths, arrive at Rivendell, leave Rivendell, arrive at ominous location (Lorien/Beorn) ....

Between the resting in Beorn's house and entering Mirkwood, there really isn't an action scene to cap things off. And we know how fond PJ is of those. So my bet is still either ending the film with the capturing of the company or the escape of the comapny.

The beginning of FOTR the novel is very similar in concept to the beginning of The Hobbit the novel.

So I guess we now know the titles of all 3 films:

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/58055

Well, the first one will remain the same - THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY. The second one, though, changes from THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN to THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG. THe third movie will be called THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN and will be released July 18th, 2014, according to Variety.

Not surprised. I hope they don't kill Smaug in the 2nd film, but it'll probably happen.

6 months between two and three?

That is half the time Shore has for the score. I am not sure I like this.

Posted

Might be that the productions of films 2 and 3 overlap somewhat so Shore might writing all through the films 2 and 3. But he is a trooper so I know he'll pull through. Also I think 6 months is ample time to write a score even for a film of the Hobbit magnitude.

Yes the second movie title is a bit lame but they had to come up with something and fast.

Posted

Why are you fighting me? I was not defending the decision to name the second film The Desolation of Smaug. The Hobbit discussion makes you confrontational BloodBoal.

Somehow I knew Quint would say something like that. He is the counterweight of eternal positive attitude to all our cynical negativity and criticism.

Posted

Seriously though, it is a great title which I think is both perfect fan service and just intriguing enough to the uninitiated. It'll make people who haven't read the book ask questions, which is normally a good thing.

With all jocundity Smaugman Cometh! would have been a great title! Or the Smaugman Prophesies.

The Hobbit: Chronicles of the Golden Wyrm oh wait that sounds like a name for a profitable fantasy frachise unto itself! I take dibs on the title! Copyright! Copyright!

Aiya!

I have been thinking. I am glad that the last film is still titled There and Back Again, which is a much better alternative than The Battle of Five Armies as it was rumoured. The Desolation of Smaug is a title I like and one can't deny it comes from Tolkien. Honestly, these titles are more Tolkien than the titles of LOTR.

Also after consideration about the idea of a trilogy, I start to see how it can work. I would need some requirements: some very good and worthy development of characters, tight, effective editing (avoiding the ROTK effect) and not going overboard with the length of the films. I can see three films of TWO HOURS, not three, instead of two films of three hours. The third film will be the weakest link, plot wise, and I think that while it can difficult to pull off, it's not impossible. Of course PJ has balls and dives headfirst confidently but we have no idea if he will pull it off or not. Anything can happen.

And of course PJ has to know how to make a two hour adventure if he ever approaches a Tintin film.

I think the ending of the first film will be when Bilbo is separated from the rest of the dwarves in Mirkwood. It ends in danger, and Bilbo has to decide to go after them. It would remind me of the ending of book IV of LOTR, with Sam behind the wall (I don't remember the text but that ending has stayed with me since I was a kid.)

Posted

And don't forget the musical narrative which Shore will assuredly provide to bind the trilogy's events all together so effortlessly and tightly. The man is a proven master of the sum whole.

The trilogy will be fine.

Posted

That's because you speak before you think. Three two hour movies will make much, much money than two three hour ones.

Posted

I think it's a combination of financial riches and Jackson wanting to tell a much broader story than what is found in the book, which I'm personally all for.

Posted

I actually think it's quite possible to broaden and expand more comfortably and successfully in terms of filmic execution and audience participation three 2hr movies rather than two 3hr movies. I'm tired of three hour excesses these days anyway, so a two hour instalment of Middle-Earthian adventures would feel like a breath of fresh air.

The suspect part is that this decision was made after filming ended. I can't see how they could just change two films into three without substantial re-writes and re-shoots. Well made films are formed on the basis of an excellent script and a three-act structure. You can't just chop up Act I, II and III / Act Ib, Act IIb, Act IIIb into Act I & Act II, Act III & Act Ib, and Act IIb & Act IIIb. I'm expecting a mess of pacing for all three films, unless the first one remains relatively as planned, and only the second and third films are re-structured.

They just reckon they had so much unused material and ideas on the boil that they couldn't help themselves. Which might sound bad to some, but I cant help but just trust Boyens and Walsh with this, so sue me!

They have given me no real reason to doubt their judgement and ability.

I don't understand why any sane and intelligent person would ever believe that the threesome writing team would EVER risk the integrity of not only these new films, but the whole legacy in general. They are not armchair film making idiots typing furiously on internet, but seasoned professionals with a reputation to preserve and a weight of responsibility we can only imagine and shudder at. They will have thought long and hard about this change, probably quite literally lost sleep over it. Why is that not obvious to crusading naysayers and mini-experts on message boards? Why it it so difficult a concept to just have some trust?

The only plausible answer is boredom and unfulfilment.

I'm in your boat Lee, you gotta trust their judgment

Maybe PJ thinks that with three linked films of two hours, each film flows better internally than with other option, taking into account any readjustuement he would make to the story. We have to think that when you're in the editing room this people have to go thtrough an endless amount of possibilities.

What I'm scared is that they attempt three films of two and half hours or three hours. PJ's philosophy is "shoot everything, decide later", and while that's perfectly ok, he tends to include things for the sake of completeness that might not be as good as the rest of the film, or not make sense, or...

Also, MONEY!

Posted

Ironically, Peter Jackson is the only link in the chain who should be cause for some slight concern. And I stress slight - he being the man who made The Greatest Trilogy Of All Time, an all. But the presumption here should be that the women in his life will reign him in and slap him down as necessary.

But yeah, look at those beautiful $$$! Mmm, tasty.

Posted

Well I am ready to give PJ a chance and shall pass my ultimate judgement after I have seen the films.

Posted

But what about BloodBoal? You and he are partners in crime. His complaining for complainings sake and acute entitlement syndrome, which just go on and on and on, need you!

Posted

Hey giving PJ a chance still doesn't mean that I will endorse every decision of his artistic vision.

Posted

Indeed. What would this thread be like without the balance of terror we create here, you BloodBoal and I?

Posted

Which is the reason why I've chosen to put you back on ignore and keep you there, at least until you learn not to irritate optimistic and open minded fans with your rabid inability to wait and see. Because I'm sorry Boodaboal, but I just find your pre-release keyboard bashing rants in relation to ANY franchise you are a "fan" of to be awfully vapid and horribly monotonous. If I'd have agreed with you over something like this in the past (Tintin for eg) then maybe I'd appreciate your expertise a little more than I do.

No hard feelings.

Wow boys

Just ignore. Don't use a keyboard function

i think it must be weird to read and follow a conversation where some posts do not appear because the person is ignored.
