We like it cheap, with large doses of disgusting industrial sausage, sodium, sugar and unhealthy cheap vegetable fat. But in the end, it's not altogether different to smoking. A fag once in a while won't kill anybody, a daily pack of 20 is another matter (and most won't be dying from it but trying to run 1 km after a 20-year smoker career is an equally sorry sight).

Koray Savas 2,260 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I tip whenever there's some type of direct, personalized service. Walking into a fast food restaurant and ordering food that's placed in a bag or on a tray doesn't deserve a tip. Good for them that they put out tip jars and that people actually help out but I feel no need to pay them more for what they're already being paid to do.I usually do 15-20%, sometimes a little more if the bill is not that much. If there's a busboy going around cleaning up I'll make sure he gets a couple dollars.

It's normal you think that.Wheat in particular is very hard to give up.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 what are you talking about. I don't eat much bread, and or pizza, but I doubt you can make a better dough than the pizza I had the other day.you eat lots zucchini and there is nothing you can do to make it palatable.
Brónach 1,330 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Yeah I don't much of either, but it's hard to abandon it.I've never prepared dough, I'd like to learn.Zucchini is healthy, you can prepare it like fried potatoes (chips? crisps? I don't know the name of that anymore) with alioli and it's delicious. I've been dropping zucchini lately though.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 I can make a very good pizza dough, but I cannot make bread that I think is worth eathing.I cannot stand zucchini, however I love yellow squash. apparently some believe they taste the same but to me they taste nothing alike. I eat yellow squash raw, baked, fried, sauteed, and my absolute favorite way, boiled.

Richard P 5,303 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 When I've been to the States, I'm always sure to tip taxi drivers (usually 15%, rounded up to the nearest few $$s), anyone running a courtesy service will get a few $$s. And if I somehow find myself in a bar then I'll give a dollar or so.My interpretation of it in American culture is that it's trying to encourage good, friendly service by making the person's living rely on it. I don't remember a time I tipped that didn't get a 'thank you, I appreciate it' response.I found in many cases that simply indicating that I don't need change is enough. To the Americans here - I've heard that giving back part of your change as a tip is considered rude somehow, but I've been asked several times whether I needed change - do you think this means that they're acknowledging I'm not American, and are trying to make it easy for me to tip them, or is the 'rude' thing just plain false? The only time I didn't tip, but wanted to, was upon blocking my toilet at a hotel in Vegas last year. A maintenance guy came over in 15 mins and fixed it. My problem though, was I'd arrived shortly before, and hadn't broken up any of my notes, and had maybe one $10 bill. I'd have been happy to give him that (hey, I appreciated him coming out so quickly), but it somehow it almost seemed rude/condescending to give that much?He then made it worse by saying he'd get housekeeping to come around and 'clean up' (clean... what up exactly?). So 5 minutes later I get a second person to whom I wanted to give a tip. I can't tell you how much I wanted to say 'sorry, I can't tip as I've just arrived and don't have much cash on me', so I just made it clear I was really grateful. What would our fellow Americans do in that situation?
Trent B 354 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 It's not hard to make home made bread, especially if you have a bread machine. Home made bread is definitely A LOT better than the store bought version. For maintenance, and house keeping in hotel rooms...well they get paid to do that. I mean IF you have the cash and are feeling generous then by all means. Over all I don't tip those type of people. If the hotel hasn't kept the rooms cleaned before the next guest then that is just shitty service.I will say there are places here that employees can not accept tips. Generally if it's a very strict rule then the employees will honor it. For example there's a local grocery store here that baggers who help out with groceries to someone's car can't accept tips. The first time that I ever paid for carry out at a Pizza Hut Express with a credit card for lack of cash confused me with the line for tip. Seriously? You put a pizza into a box, set it on the shelf, and waited for me. You need a tip? Read a book while you wait.I don't put a tip down for carry out pizza. Delivery yes, but not carry out.
Richard P 5,303 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Well I should clarify it wasn't crappy housekeeping, I blocked it myself (tummy trouble)...And yeah, I know they're paid, but since I always tip housekeeping if I'm staying more than one night, I wasn't sure if they were anticipating it.
Jay 46,243 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 The first time that I ever paid for carry out at a Pizza Hut Express with a credit card for lack of cash confused me with the line for tip. Many company's machines just print out the same style receipts every time regardless of wether tipping is ever expected there Same thing if you buy carry out from like an Applebees or Chilis or whatever, the tip line is on the receipt because its the same receipts they use for dine-in service, but you can just ignore it.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Well I should clarify it wasn't crappy housekeeping, I blocked it myself (tummy trouble)...And yeah, I know they're paid, but since I always tip housekeeping if I'm staying more than one night, I wasn't sure if they were anticipating it.Richard, you were not obligated in any fashion to tip the maintenance guy. You were'nt obligated to tip housekeeping at the time after that. If you wanted to tip housekeeping at the end of your stay fine, but 10% is what we/I consider on housekeeping, no more. And I doubt your tummy troubles would block a hotel toilet, they're generally better at flushing than home toilets.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,386 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Tips for housekeeping? What?
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 If you stay at a hotel and the house staff tidies the room on a multiple day visit it's fair to leave a tip. I always tip on cruise ships.
Wojo 2,458 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Yeah, if you don't, they'll find it anyways.

hornist 1,261 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Tipping culture is just wrong, pay the decent money for the good people. Been visiting the north america for four times, alwayslittle bit annoyed of this this habit and I think it is embarrassing for the workers...In Finland the waiters have decent salary already, maybe some extra from the tips. The price of eating out is nevertheless mindless. And the taxi-rides in Finland? The starting free is 8,60 euros .... plus the actual ride.. heh, ridiculously expensive...! Don't like any tip there... Quintus 6,495 Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 I wonder how realistic that gum chewing porter is who carries Clark and Lois' bags up to their suite in Superman 2.Because his slimy self-entitled manner deserved Superman's right fist obliterating his head from the cranium down!
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 looking at tipping I find that there are service charges added to many european bills, we don't have service charges so I wonder how much it costs over there.here in the states if a meal cost 12.99 you're charged 12.99 plus around 9 or 10%tax (that's about the average sales tax nationwide on dining out), your total is 14.30. There is no service charge. There is no law that says a tip is mandatory. You then figure your tip on the subtotal, the 12.99 not the 14.30. Some restaurants collect all tips and divide them evenly for the night. I don't approve of that. My tip is for the wait person who served me.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,386 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 I dont think ive ever seen service charges been directly stated on a bill. Not for a restaurant.I agree with Pasi. The "responsibility" for paying the waiter should be on the shoulders of the employer. Not the customer. If you buy a TV in the USA you dont tip the guy you buy it from. His salary is embedded somewhere in the price of that TV.

#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,386 Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Ofcourse it is. But it's not stating on the bill.
gkgyver 1,647 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 How much I tip depends purely on sympathy and whether or not someone does a good job. At fast food places, should I go there occasionally, I never tip. For what? Packing my burgers in a bag?I also really don't make the sum dependent on the sum I spend on the food. I tip just as much for a meal of 15 Euro as I would for a meal of 50. 2-3 Euro max. For a tip of 10 bucks I would have to have a dinner of significantly more than 100 Euro, and that happens rarely. If the service isn't adequate or uncourteous, I don't tip at all. I don't tip someone for not throwing a platter in my face.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Here, if you have a party greater than 6 the tip is automatically included in the bill.

#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,386 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I would! That is the height of presumption. Not only do they expect you to tip, they also put the amount on it for you???Are tips tax deductible? I mean for business lunches etc?
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 tips are a deductible expense but you must have sufficient deductions (7500.00 I believe).
